Thanks for bringing that game to my attention. It's neat how the combat and overworld are the same engine kind of makes it feel like Mizzurna Falls and the anime opening reminds me of Wild Arms. I would probably put it on my Xplay for later play if my Japanese were better because Konami RPGs had stories with a subtly different 90s JRPG flavor.

I must admit to it being a while since I really combed the PSX-J library I usually just talk about my go-to "obscure games" Blade Arts, Gungage, Gegege No Kitarou, ChoroQ 2-3, Racing Lagoon, Panic Coaster and ParanoiaScape but now I see them come up on lists even in mainstreamfags sites so maybe not obscure enough for this thread

Even though I HAVE mentioned it in passing I'll suggest checking out the Simple series of games. In the US the only "budget games" were Greatest Hits re-releases and some rushed games from the end of the console lifespan like Martian Gothic and Eternal Eyes but in Japan new budget releases were a staple. The "series" is their price in yen so pic related released at about $15.

Most of them have sort of arcadey score attack feeling gameplay but using the "cutting edge" 3D aesthetic of the Playstation and later PS2. None were Westernized I guess because it wouldn't have been worth the cost? But most are simple enough to be playable. It's not graphics/gameplay combo that appeals to a lot of people but maybe to some. They amuse me pretty good for short periods but I'm a pretty weird guy.

>Blade Arts
The destructible environments during boss fights were rad as hell in that game, definitely caught me off guard during my first playthrough.

The level design is kind of wildly inconsistent though.
>I'll suggest checking out the Simple series of games.
I don't know how the Simple Series is obscure nowadays, EDF kinda made them some kind of hipster underdog.
For budget games they're not all bad I guess, problem is that there's so many Simple Series games that only a 10% of them are actually worth playing, most of it is bland shovelware.

Even bland shovelware can be enjoyable pseudo nostalgically. The shallow gameplay can really allow you to soak up the aesthetics. It's a good way to enjoy B-tier 2nd gen games, too.

I just posted this in the PS1 thread, but N2O is fucking fantastic. It's a typical tunnel shooter in most ways except for the trippy visuals which add to the difficulty as you progress. It's Tempest with moving walls and a shape shifting tunnel.

https://youtu.be/sJzdCiJ9zVI

It has a nice learning curve that makes it easy to pick up but rewards skills and reflex at higher play levels. Watch the speed and tunnel movement as this bonus level progresses.

The entire game loaded into RAM so you could swap the disc out for any audio CD of your choosing.
