Never played it (because all in Japanese back then), but it has a strong reputation and the few videos I've seen were extremely interesting.

Have you tried Bahamut Lagoon?

i have not. that's a tactical rpg, yeah?

Yeah, and it's grouped with Rudras or Super Mario RPG as the final masterpieces by Square for the SNES.

Pretty original productions that got somewhat overshadowed by FF7 shortly after...

It's a bit of a hybrid of tactical RPG and JRPG. Ever play SMT: Devil Survivor? It's like that.

It was one of the last Super Famicom games to be officially released. All the years of improving graphics, learning from what made games like Seiken Densetsu 3 and FF6 were put into this one game. And of course them they throw on a weird magic system that boggled translators so it never left Japan.

i played a little live a live the other day, and wasn't too keen on it. maybe it was just that character's chapter i didn't care for. and i very much intend to play treasure hunter g.

I tried this, not long ago. It was suuuuper boring. But people like it I guess? So you will probably end up being one of them, but maybe you'll be disappointed yeah. You just have to try it and see.

I never got around to beating this game. Was it as good as I remembered it to be?

Depends on what you expect from the game.
The Kotodama system is pretty interesting and definitely unique, though pretty flawed and the characters can't do much other than that, making it a really shallow magic spamfest later on, still one of the most interesting magic systems around on the sole virtue of being able to actually write spells on an actual linguistic engine.
Visually, it's insane, hard to think anyone could pull out such visual quality on the SNES, and some enemy designs like Sodom are excellent, its spell casting animation is really cool for instance.
Plot wise, it's nothing special and really falls short in the end but the fact that you have three(four) different MCs all with their own side of the main story is a great narrative gimmick that should be more used.
Music wise, I think it's Sasai's best work together with his Tobal tracks.

If you want more interesting lesser known or minor RPGs, try Metal Max or Dark Law, I'd say the SaGa series too but it's not minor at all except in the west.
There obviously more than just these but many aren't translated and I don't know wheter you know moon.

i was pretty much looking for another final fantasy type game with excellent visuals and maybe something new thrown in. so far, that's exactly what i'm getting. i was thinking about playing saga 3, but i haven't heard of dark law or the metal max series. both look very interesting, particularly dark law. and nah, if there's not an english patch it's kind of out of the question for me.

It's honestly pretty bad. The producer who made it was fired soon after. The story, the gameplay, the character leveling and development is all linear. The mantra system is the game's only gimmick apart from playing different routes concurrently, and the only real impact it has on the game is that all the characters are functionally interchangeable and the game suffers the same "Red Mage Syndrome" FF7 and 8 have. There's no exploration or side quests or unique character abilities or really any opportunity to strategize outside the basical attack/heal cycle. In terms of the game mechanics it's a bare minimal skeleton of a JRPG.

The music is admittedly cool. The graphics are decent but they take a nose dive in the underground area.

>>3777953
There's no SRPG element like Bahamut Lagoon or Devil Survivor. It's nothing like either of those. I don't think you've actually played this, or otherwise you've confused it with something else.

Romancing SaGa 3 is a pretty fine title for beginners, you shouldn't play it like a FF game though, but then again, there's a thread for those games so I won't waste time explaining things in here, it isn't the place.
Dark Law is a pretty fun game, if not a bit hard in the beginning and full of little secrets, it's also very focused on main quests which are essentially huge puzzles that you can easily fail by simply missing a potion or something so I suggest you to save often just to avoid messing up a scenario.
Metal Max is one of my favorite series but it's a bit weird and is more focused on exploration than anything, I hope you like Returns.
Since you can't read japanese you might want to try Treasure Hunter G like others already told you, Bahamut Lagoon is also a decent game, if not terribly overdesigned and with non existent difficulty as a result of that, still interesting for some gimmicks like interactive maps, Monstania is a cute little game too but it's more for a young audience, give it a whirl and see if it clicks with you, if you want something a bit more traditional gameplay wise, I heartily suggest you to play Mystic Ark if you haven't already, same with Brain Lord and Elnard/Seventh Saga since they're part of the series.

i liked brain lord & have been meaning to play mystic ark & seventh saga. i haven't heard of monstania, but i do like what tactical rpgs i've played (mostly fire emblems)

A lot of the fun came from seeing what enemies cast and adapting it for yourself. Game only gave you cookie cutter examples, but really powerful mantras came from enemies themselves.

Also, does anyone else think Riza's path is just horrible? Bosses seemed pretty unbalanced comparing to other character's paths, shops were either so near each other that they were redundant or so far apart that you got to the next one without items and a buttload of ragu. Also, I'm not alone in thinking Marina is useless right?

Visually and aurally it's one of the best games on the system. The battle system is unique and interesting but uneven and sort of broken. The plot and world are a clusterfuck and there is barely any logical sequence of events so I had no clue what was going on half the time.
