Hey /vr/,
Can we have a good ol' Ninja Gaiden thread going?
Which game is the best?
Do you prefer the old ones to the new ones?
How should they make a new 2D ninja gaiden game if they were to make one?

I'm also streaming playthroughs of the first 2 games if you're interested:

Mostly it is due to one thing - if you die on any one of the last three forms of the final bosses, they send you back to the beginning of the stage instead of just one screen back, and it is too frustrating to fight your way back.

NG1 is much easier than CV3. Tight controls, great level design, it's my favorite NES game.

Castlevania is a different kind of hard. It's all about trajectory and thinking of stratagy for certain sections of the game. whereas Ninja gaiden is more reflex based and remembering where enemies are.

aaah yeah the american NG3, I thought jap ng2 was difficult, damn my eyes where shining with the 8bit spark again.... and I don't know why people think ng3 is the hardest? the "real" dragonsword, or the big dragonsword powerupt protect ryu even overhead, there are less bullshit spots and the jumps feels like you are on a magic carpet... the only hard stage FOR ME in ninja gaiden 3 is the last one (just a personal opinion, I don't take my experiences as fact)

Ninja Gaiden is my favorite trilogy of NES games. I think 2 is the best game although 1 is my favorite.

As for bad design? Hell no. Ninja Gaiden is so well designed that if you work at it you can manage to beat the game without dying once like I did. You can't do that consistently with Castlevania due to bad controls.

I liked the original OST in the NES games, but with the use of the MIDI in the SNES the songs take new life. I honestly felt like in an 80's action movie with the over-the-top brass segments in each section, more pumped up than the first time i played the games.

Can't QUITE say i agree, NG2 (360) was fun but combat didn't feel quite as technical as, say, DMC3. Once you got the Scythe, the rest of the game was a matter of "shoot at it until it dies" and jump+XXXY for the bosses. On the other hand, difficulty starting on Way of the Mentor was bullshit hard. The very first area with the ungodly spam of explosive kunai took me at least an hour to beat.

I never used the scythe.

Dmc3 is not technical at all unless you are playing for score (even than its just about alternating different animtions to milk the diminitioning returns. its about the same as shot cycles in an mmo)

Ninja gaiden has technical aspects that actually affect the combat instead of just scoring: there are many opportunites to abuse invunability frames, ultra technique, finisher move, a well timed shuriken to stun an enemy at the right and identifying when to use slower but aoe combos

>> No.378653

>>378584
Now that's just nitpicking (which i guess i'm doing too, so uh). I always found DMC required a bit of "finesse" to go around, but this thread ain't even about DMC so i'll leave it at that.
About NG2, it CAN be played tactically like you've described, but it's a hell of a lot more simple to just go around turning everything to pink mist with the Scythe. It's about as hard and as fun as you want it to be, much like DMC, i suppose.

FUCK THOSE SIX-PACK BAZOOKAS THOUGH. FUCK THEM WITH A WELL-OILED SWORD.

>Ninja gaiden has technical aspects that actually affect the combat instead of just scoring: there are many opportunites to abuse invunability frames, ultra technique, finisher move, a well timed shuriken to stun an enemy at the right and identifying when to use slower but aoe combos
To be fair, DMC3 has pretty much all of this except finishers.

>> No.378750

Dang, OP's a beast. he beat Ninja gaiden. took him a while but he did it.

>> No.378751

>>378679
-no finishers
-no ultra technique
-invunability frames dont have nearly the same level of skill required (the roll is on demand invunability while all invun frames in ninja gaiden require prep time or a specific condition
-combos in dmc are purely aestitic there arn't many that actually help you kill quicker

dmc's complexity is only in the scoring system. If you arn't playing for score than you just mash out that one thrusting combo over and over

>> No.378850

>>378751
-no ultra technique
Has crazy combos and boosts like Ultimate Tempest which require buffering and proper set ups. Also DTE.
-invunability frames dont have nearly the same level of skill required (the roll is on demand invunability while all invun frames in ninja gaiden require prep time or a specific condition
Rolling has I-frames, Jumping has I-frames, QS has I-frames on the start up, all the trickster moves have I-frames, RG has I-frames. Learning the I-frames is essential for high-level play and on the harder difficulty levels.
>-combos in dmc are purely aestitic there arn't many that actually help you kill quicker
This I can't agree with at all, each move has a different property and purpose. Learning the meta behind DT mechanics is a big part of playing the game at a high skill level.

>dmc's complexity is only in the scoring system. If you arn't playing for score than you just mash out that one thrusting combo over and over
I'll admit DMC3 has a different focus, mainly on the style and juggles, but come on now.

>> No.378901

It's an easy game to memorize and get down so that you can run through it, it's just the last chunk at the end that's time consuming, and that's when most people quit because they don't want to do the entire chapter over and over again.

You just have to be dedicated or use save states, it's not really that bad.

>> No.378916

>>378901
>use save states
I really hope no one on this board is that much of a scrub. Save states are cancer.

>> No.378930

>>378850
But thats true. If you do not play for score than dmc has the complexity of a dynasty warriors game.

There are a lot of different moves but most of them don't really have a practical use, most are just redundant copies of the basic hack animation.

If you play for score there is some complexity, but I think a game like ninja gaiden that is complex whether or not you play for score is better designed.
And on the subject of scoring in beat em ups, dmc3's scoring system really isn't that complicated. Viewtiful joe is more complex scoring system because of the complex resource managment, theres a lot of micro managment with using fast-foward on the right frames. And if you want to talk about really complex scoring theres stuff like guwange where you can take a combo from the first stage and never break it during the entire game. Theres ikaruga where the scoring system which has a scoring system that changes how you play so much its practically a different game. Getting an SSS in dmc is just a matter of having an efficient shot cycle.

>> No.379000

>>378930
Well, I disagree completely. Anything is easy though if you know the mechanics behind it, Ninja Gaiden and DMC especially. It's not really what the thread is about, but if you can beat the higher difficulties by spamming stinger, then I am impressed.

I must say, I was VERY impressed with Ninja Gaiden when I played it (recently). It made me replay it immediately after beating it. The last game to do that was Fallout 2 a couple years ago. I mean, it's at least in my top 5 games now. If you guys are saying NG2 is better, I'm in for a good time. I'll play it next once I beat Mega Man 2 and Shatterhand.

Oh, and I think people get a little too worked up about the "going back to 6-1" thing. It's nowhere near as bad to repeat the stages as it is to clear them the first time. Plus, it gives you more opportunity to gather ninja power. I eventually beat Jaquio using just the firewheel rather than my sword because I had so much ninja power. I still can't beat that fucker with just a sword, though.

I've only played 1 and to be honest that game is enough for me. I'm not saying it was so bad it turned me off, it's just that I couldn't imagine there being much more to 2 or 3 that iI hadn't got in 1. That and the fact it was super frustrating to beat even the first game. I mean I love NG and still play the first couple levels for fun, but that game seriously starts to frustrate me highly. I know I should just learn to control myself but it just gets to me somehow when I have to do the same level so many times. Or I finally get to the boss only to be shut down in 2 seconds because I have 1 bar of health.

I've not played the new ones but I heard NG Black is absolutely awesome and insane. I've always wanted to try it but I doubt I'll ever have an Xbox.
