Pixel art was due to a limitation of the console resolution of the time. If the developers could, everything would've been done in vector art.

PSP one wasn't for me.

>Original:
-Technically best game of the console, biggest cart size at whopping 72 mbits uncompressed, it was a milestone to be able to emulate this game at one point
-voice-acted sequences,
-background objects interact with players (birds, grass, reflections etc),
-amazingly laid world akin to Seiken Densetsu 3, combat takes actual strategy and is quick, beautiful spritework

>Playstation Portable:
-world is flat, literally every continent is just a plateau with zero fucking hidden treasures
-mash x to win, no need to position anyone and no need to use KM at all due to regular combos being too powerful, yet takes 10 times as long because they built it on SO2 system, so the field is huge
-you have to listen to catch phrases every time you craft anything
-Welch hangs out with you to remind you that SO3 exists and no matter what you do, it will be for nothing
-that ugly zoom in&zoom out sprite style squashes sprite really badly, and horridly clashes with background
-Fucked up rebalancing to the point where there is no reason to do a certain crafting - for example, cooking vegetable or fruits
-that freaking 00s style of design and look with grossly saturated color
-where the fuck is my music selection, squeenix? Where is it?

16 colors are not pixel art?

>> No.3768603

There's a pixel art community called Pixeljoint. And in the early days they had a rules about lowRes drawings and color indexing paintings.

Now a days they generally allow it. After some indie devs, who rely on the place for free advertising, were like "hey who cares about process, we're selling games and all that matters is the end result."
But there's still a lot of people who think it's gauche to let the computer do the anti-alias and dithering.
Kinda like how Traditional Animators stick up their noses at Flash animations and tweening tools.

I didn't know color indexing was a thing for the longest time. And even other people that were writing tutorials were unaware of it too. I felt pretty disillusioned when I realized the pixel art I was idolizing wasn't what I thought it was.

You see, it's my opinion, but when I think of pixel art, I think of "art limited by pixel grid and color depth". And frankly, 640x400 is not where these limitations still present much challenge. An image like this could have been simply converted from high res to look like this, via any graphics software. See picrelated.

I don't want to say you're silly, but you are. The dithering is done by hand, it's not scaling algorithms.

Where do you draw the line? Would 640x400x8 or 640x200x16 count?
Does it have to be 640x200x8 or less?
Do you make a difference between 8 out of 8 colors and 8 out of 512?

Here's how a digitized anime looks (Cagliostr on the PC88).
Few people would describe it as pixel art because the pixels are all over the place.

Yeah when they were using digitized graphics it was so glaringly obvious. There are a lot of games that were really lazy and digitized backgrounds while the character portraits were done by hand, it was such an ugly clash.

And to add to what you said, the full 640x400 frame is very rarely used, most of the games are a frame within a frame, it only occupies the whole screen in special scenes (read: when the girl is about to receive the D). So what goes on in that tinier inner screen it's not pixel art?

What about those gigantic isometric cities that were made out of pixel art in the 00s? Is that not pixel art?

This "pixel art has to be close to 240p" argument is shaky at best.

Thanks, had a laugh. These algorithms have been developed in 1975 and have been used since forever.

The pic I took is slightly flawed though. It works better with artwork that has less color changes. Unfortunately, this one had way too many gradients—and slight ones. But if you draw artwork specifically with big areas of solid color, you will get much better results. Like your "pixel art" pic.

For fuck's sake man, I know the dithering algorithms are as old as time, I'm saying they didn't use them. Some games used it as a pipeline, some artist would do the actual HD art, then they would scan it and use the lines to create the baseline. Then they would recolor it pixel by pixel, it's not an automated process. I'm starting to wonder if you're just bored and being a troll, which is that case don't waste my time because you have no idea what you're talking about.

You can try and downscale any image you want and downgrade to 16 colors, it will never have the same effect. You're either in denial or you're a dumb dumb. Again, you don't have to like it, it's all up to personal preference, but don't go saying that it was an automated scaling process, it wasn't.

It's not about the screen res, it's about image res. In early city buidling sims, it's mostly pixel art, because houses were tiny sprites, less than 32x32 px. Bit depth wasn't there yet to guarantee smooth anti-aliasing, too.

As for where to draw the line, I think that by definition, "pixel" art needs to be pixelated. It should present limits for artwork. Picrelated is the best example which comes to mind.

This is why SD style was so popular in NES times: with gigantic heads, you could actually draw meaningful expressions and detail on characters' faces. Having 3 pixels to draw an eye instead of 0,5 pixels to do it presented quite an advantage. Think of Castlevania, on the other hand. Not only the character had no face, the outline of his body was also weird brown.

I think when it comes to the point where you can freely draw gradients, irregular shapes, eyes and facial features without any tricks, the artwork slowly goes out of pixel art territory. And also, I think it should be specifically drawn in low res to qualify. Just taking a photo of Schwarzenegger and downscaling it while reducing it to 4 colors is not "art".

I'm telling you guys, the majority of "pixel art" is bullshit.
Dithering and color palettes are all generated, none of it is hand selected or placed.

The people who think of it as "bead art" are fooling themselves.

Haha, source? I'd like to watch it.

Anyway, there's a specific "halftone" color in some raster editors, which paints with already dithered shade. I think even Mario Paint had it. And nope, it's not done by hand. Maybe they'd need to brush it up, but still 99% of work is done autpmatically.

However, it's true there's one caveat. You'd better draw the initial image with less than 256 colors. Then dithering becomes easy.

Also, you can specifically reduce the colors to a specific palette. See picrelated. I sacrificed the BG, but Kenshiro looks pretty good, don't you think. Especially since it was a shit JPG.

They had this neat thing as well when the transparency was like over 75% they would morph the dithering into this heavy halftone effect. It was pretty neat. I think people hated it though, they rather just have crisp perfect anti-aliasing I guess.

There was some nice vector art in the mid 80s. Pixel art became more prominent toward the end of the decade and the system's life.
You've got to appreciate the work they did with the 8 basic colors. You'll find those even in V2 games. 16 out of 4096 colors is nothing in comparison.

It can be said that the line between pixel art and simple low res is blurry. But I'd put it a bit differently: you can have both kinds in one image.

Take a look at picrelated. On the one hand, Leona's legs don't really look like pixel art. But on the other, looks at the small details. The seams on her clothing, the buttons, the shoelaces, her face/eyes, her fingers… This is where the pixel size comes into play. So I'd say this pic is low res art with a lot of pixel art elements.

But take Metal Slug. Now this is different. The sprites are much smaller, so they HAVE to play around pixel size constantly—especially since they chose black outlines for a cartoon style. I think few would argue that this is pixel art.

I think some of the best examples of pixel art are JRPGs. They have some tiny sprites/tiles, and yet they make interesting stuff with them. Fighting games do have to account for pixels in small details, like faces, but otherwise it's not really about pixels. Perhaps this is the reason for the notorious Elena SFIII animation, which people always complain about; Capcom would have to actually put a lot of effort in drawing her head and expressions, instead of just rotoscoping it like her body.

Maybe if you could put thoughts into words, I could have an actual argument with you. But as you say, it's "hard work".

First off, I'm not the right guy to watch a faggot GDC talk. Second, I told you pixel art is about limitations of pixel. The pic you posted does indeed qualify for it. See 1px highlights on leaves, the leaves themselves which look like it despite being 8px wide, etc.

This pic is not just "dude dithering lmao". It has an impressive amount of pixel-by-pixel work. But at the same time, it's not all about that. You can see the very basic rock in the front and slightly further on. The waterfall is obviously not pixel-by pixel stuff too.

So most of it is pixel art, but there's a lot of just art in it, too.

I'm not arguing about its quality. It's just that you insist that pixel art is what anything that has "2D retro feel", which goes to show that perhaps your place is on Tumblr rather than on this board.

I think that most anons are failing to see that downsampling and auto dither techniques were used when doing pixel art. Most of the time artists had to tune stuff by hand for it to look good and make the most out of every pixel otherwise the results were lazy. There were plenty of lazy stuff (in the 90s 16/32 bit era) that was clearly digitised and not well adapted to low resolutions or color counts. I don't know where I'd draw the line but I think that as long as the source is a drawn/illustrated piece of art and the result is made to be displayed (in a more or less meaningful way) in a low res low color display it can be considered pixel art (even if it is lazy). Something like a 3d render where meaningful adaptation effort for the low res screen has been made would be ok too, same for pictures, as long as the intention of using the pixels meaningfully is there tl;dr an auto pixel art of a drawing is most of the time pixel art (even if lazy), pics and 3d renders need usually more tuning to qualify (imo)

>> No.3776602

I don't agree with deleted post guy but I kind of see his point. When you think of pixel art, you naturally think about manipulating pixels to get the best-looking image you can within certain hardware (or alternatively, self-imposed) limitations. And PC-98 certainly has limiations, but they do allow for a pretty fully-realized anime artstyle which would not be possible on inferior hardware. So it is not as "pixelly" as some other stuff.

I think people are unfortunately arguing over a clash of what their internal definition of "pixel art" is even though there is not an absolute definition.

>> No.3776612

>>3771962
Vector drawing requieres hardware with good multiplication and division and also benefits enourmously from floating point operations and that became common by the late 90s. The problem of raster images grows morcomplex with resolution, which we could consider became "high" by the end of the 90s too

Ok I'm getting sick of this thread turning into a bashing so let me explain what exactly is wrong.

First, the edges are not clean. Good sprite art has a 1x pixel wide boundary. Anything more implies a greater shadow or overlapping edges. On one side is the background, so it should be clean. The other is the interior, which leads into either a solid color or some shading technique.

You wanna make that look good? Start by sharpening all the boundary lines and edges

The old school approach to pixel art was to draw the image on graph paper, color it according to your limitations and then input the coordinates from the grid.

When computers became more widespread and capable you could just draw the outline, scan it and color it digitally.
Nowadays some artists use drawing tablets.

I really like these pictures that look as if they're of authentic locations, they look so modern of the time yet so timeless, setting so insignificant yet so interesting and true to life, like this could very well be in an urban area nearby right now, and you could very well be there and just stand around and hang out
