Turn A, G Gundam, G Reconguista, and Gundam Unicorn are the only ones I've watched that I actually enjoyed and didn't have to force myself or something.

The universal century movies aren't that bad but most of the time I'd still rather be watching Votoms.

Reconguista feels a lot like King Gainer, which is the best Tomino thing.

Gundam Unicorn might be one of the best anime I've ever seen, never mind just Gundam.

I watched the version of the first Gundam which is compressed into 3 short movies. Liked it a lot because of the mature tone. Aside from main cast being too young, it has little cheesy stuff and overall anime bullshit. But at the same time, it wasn't dull… I'm not sure I'd like to watch some war story with little personal/relatable stuff and bleak mecha. But Gundam 1 had surprisingly memorable characters with interesting personalities and relationships between them.

Of course it's still a bit basic since it's 1979 anime after all. But what Gundam turned into with series like Wing and the ones that followed it was just ridiculous. A series once praised for eschewing cheesy "super robot" canon for a more mature approach got G Gundam—basically a super robot shonen story; then same Gundam Wing with its bishonen cast, toy mecha and a suit with fucking wings made of feathers. Eventually, it just decomposed into a meta parody of itself—some gunpla shit, which is just a big fucking toy commercial at this point.

Gundam used to feel like a movie, with detailed plot and pretty mature themes, nicely combining it with robot fights in the space. But it turned into shonen anime, where everything is just about giant robots, cute boys and cheesy sob stories for teens.

As usual, reading comprehension of /vr/ never ceases to amaze me.

I said Gundam 1 COMBINED fun parts with mature parts. That's what other entries couldn't do, as they slipped to complete shonen—and a pretty mediocre quality one at that.

You see, if you take away robots from Gundam 1, it's still a captivating, memorable story, that takes itself seriously and feels dramatic and mature. But if you do this with Wing, you'll see that it feels suspiciously familiar: a young female hero who is circled by cute boys suddenly gets involved in a huge conflict between two factions… Doesn't it remind you of any major movie hit for girls from the recent years?

Now what's the most over-the-top, battlecry-heavy, lazors-through-the-whole-screen video game genre, aside from SRW itself? That's right, 2D fighters. That's where you have ridiculous super moves, ultra moves, neo max moves and so on. So it's almost like super robots and 2D fighters were made for each other.

Isn't there anything like this though? MvC engine would work great for a game like this. Imagine a fight between, say, GaoGaiGar and G Gundam with all the screen-wide attacks and such. This must be a thing right?

I started rewatching Gundam Wing because of another /vr/ thread about this same game.

I didn't seem to know or care as a kid but Heero and Relena might be some of the worst characters ever. Heero is cold and uncaring with unbeatable plot armor and Relena is full on retarded, she likes Heero really for no reason and she is a borderline stalker.

I like the Gundam design concepts in Wing. I liked Wing for a while too until I realized there are better ones out there. The endless duel game is fun as shit though.

G Gundam is good if you approach it from like a "The Princess Bride" or "SpaceBalls" sort of way.

The game's cool, but I really think the characters and moves are pretty imbalanced.

Sandrock is "we put this character up in a week" tier. Nothing connects, every move is slow af, the damage is miniscule. Heavyarms seemingly has no chains whatsoever; again, slow as all fuck, close range super. His looping combo aside, Deathscythe is actually pretty shit too. He's like a Guile who's eaten a load of shit.

At the same time, Wing/Wing Zero have great long chains, weak normals that hit low, and good combos overall (especially Wing Zero with his launcher attack). And Shenlong is just simply above everyone else in the game. Excellent everything, nearly no flaws.

Also, is it me, or all weak projectiles in the game are garbage? Slow speed, slow recovery, don't combo, only good to counter vulcan really. Almost always EX is vastly better.

I like game a lot. They did a good job keeping it simple. It's so easy to learn the game. Watch me explain the game in 10 second of your time:

There, now you are ready to play and have some good time. All you need more than that is specific character attack motions. I wish more fighters adopted this easy to learn, hard to master mentality as opposed to hard to learn, hard to master direction it went.

I was talking about chains. But combos are a problem too. His launcher combos into what? His crappy projectile? Strong punch? It's pretty lame. His throw doesn't combo from it. No low hitting weak punch and sweep limits his mixup.

With Wing for example, you have the full combo: (Y / d+Y repeated N times), B, d+B, A, d+A. Deals a good damage and is meterless. I forget if you can combo anything after it but it's still very good.
