Thank you so much for the dump, OP. One of my most favorite Mega Drive games ever.
I had a copy in 2000 and after finishing it 2 times traded it for Comix Zone. This decision was really stupid, and I used to regret about this decision for years and recently got myself another copy to make up for this mistake.
I didn't like Comix Zone by the way

I try not to start with the newest one. Some prefer II, some III, some IV. The inherent polish of newer technology and more experience might hinder your ability to go back and fully enjoy its more primitive predecessors. I think they're all very good games. You should play the series from the beginning, but if you find yourself not enjoying one, or if you're feeling done with it, feel free to drop it and move on to the next. They're all really easy to emulate.
The order goes like this, I'll give you the best versions as well:
Wonder Boy (arcade)
Monster Land (arcade)
Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair (TurboGrafx-16, but arcade is also acceptable)
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (Sega Master System, turn FM sound on)
Wonder Boy in Monster World (Genesis)
Monster World IV (Genesis)

It's got almost every version of every game, unless it's a re-skin that couldn't keep the WB/MW name due to the licensing agreement, like Adventure Island, and the TG16 versions of Monster Lair, Dragon's Trap, or Wonder Boy in Monster World. It's worth getting the ISO if you want to browse through the great art galleries, which includes clean scans of the manuals and individual pieces of artwork.

Holy guacamole, I want it.
I want a remake. Or a re-do. Completely start over designing the game and make it with all this cut content placed in, and in a more open world like its predecessor. Keep the Genesis sprites even, and keep making more new sprites with the same Genesis limitations. I would probably even prefer that.
Oh, but get a new composer that doesn't remake the same song over and over again as the OST.
