When all other retro games are increasingly expensive?
Rank all the different genres of retro game by resale value from lowest to highest. Be sure to include subgenres such as Rally vs Indycar and 3D fighter vs 2D fighter.

Because sports games are shit, with few exceptions.

I understand why sports games are, since they're annual releases. Racing games I don't get since so many are different from each other. That and they only became yearly within the last decade.

>> No.3740875

When a genre emphasize realism then it becomes obsolete as soon as the new version comes out. This logic doesn't apply to games like Mario Kart which don't emphasize realism and there are major differences in sequels and not just better physics and graphics.

True.

Also, maybe it's because I'm a dumb 4chan poster, but who the fuck plays sports games on a video game console?

If I want to play football I just go outside with my friends.

>who the fuck plays sports games on a video game console?

It's what most people who own a console play. This has always been the case from at least the 16 bit era.

>>3740953
Exceptions made for stuff like that.

I meant straight sports games, like madden 90-whatever.

I suppose the price may be affected with modern equivalents. Shooting games, RPGs, and action/platformers appear to be expensive now while sports, board, shovelware titles may be on the lower end of prices in general. There are plenty of exceptions as each game genre can vary wildly in price. Also it may be more noticable with low priced sport titles due to quantity available.

You guys make me feel bad as I enjoy sports games since the 8bit days. I still enjoy playing them.

>> No.3741020

>>3741014
Don't feel bad.
I personally don't enjoy them, but I wouldn't judge anyone for liking them.

Like, I've heard that apparently WWF: No Mercy for the N64 is still considered to be a great wrestling game by today's standards.

As someone who's really into classic racers it's definitely a more specific kind of autism that cause you to want games that are effectively made obsolete like >>3740875 said.

I have fun matching up the year of release with what that type of racing was like at the time, who the stars were, what new technologies were taking over or were predicted to take over and didn't, what cars or bikes were considered top of the heap and how they fell from grace, the game is just a piece of a historical picture for me. This requires more effort and interest in a nongaming topic than playing Kirby again. I'm not into ball sports but I'm sure there are a handful of autists out there who have the knowledge to see an old game and think how so-and-so played in '92 and was the best whatever and get the same kind of enjoyment I get.

the overlap between being enough of a fan of some professional sport to do this and even realizing people play old games for reasons besides being poor at all is much, much smaller than the number of sports game carts and discs produced

>> No.3741974

Pathetic nerds aren't into sports anon

Made me think how sometimes I pick Winning Eleven 6 to play just because it has a squad that meant a lot for me back then. The personal experience is a huge factor for the people who play these games - more than simulating a certain sport, the cool thing is to emulate the real-life stars, current leagues and stuff.
Hell, even modern games suffer from this, you can see shit like FIFA 14 being sold for like 5$ because it's not up to date anymor. There's a reason ISS hacks were (and still are) hugely popular in some places and survived (in spirit) through the PS2 era.

That said, most retro sports games have neither of these factors (real athletes licenses or a polished simulation compared to late versions) so the market is limited to sport enthusiasts, a niche within a niche. Less demand, lower prices.

I still play FIFA World Cup 98 in my N64..

Oh yeah, I forgot visual novels, those can be pretty inexpensive at this time. Some can be pretty good, but they still stay cheap.

>>3741020
Yeah, I can get if a genre is not someone's thing. I just can't label a whole genre as "shit" for instance I don't play too many flight simulators, but I loved the Wing Commander and X-Wing/Tie Fighter titles back in their days, so I can't call that genre shit as there are likely more of what I like there.

As for WWF: No Mercy, I still enjoy it. I had great times with friends creating goofy trailer trashy characters with silly/stupid storylines and letting the computer determine outcomes, in a sort of RPG way. It is very fun to play as well, especially in multiplayer, but it was never a chore for me even playing single player to unlock additional contents. The play mechanics I think hold up, but I also like the modern ones like WWE All-Stars as well.

>>3741794
Thanks, that's the problem with me reusing old pics if I didn't get it right the first time, the mistake will always be there. I was just trying to be funny and guess it is more funny to know how stupid I am. Hard to believe I spent over a decade in classes for the language, and having not used it in many more decades since I really did lose it. I guess the same can be said of my ability in videogames, I think I got worse at that too.

sports games are cheap because unlike other genres sports titles by nature become obsolete quickly

it has nothing to do with quality one way or another

>> No.3743558

even though racing is my favourite genre and I like sports games is a matter of fact that most of them are poorly done. retrowise thinking you see a good game like ridge racer and lots of ridge racer clones which are barely unplayable like circuit beat and on, it's really difficult to find games that aren't rubbish out here. I don't have a theory for sports games but my guess would be the updated rosters that sell, not exactly the quality of the game.

>> No.3743581

because only completists want them. casual gamers dont care for sport games(with exception for nostalgia). i mean would you rather buy contra or final lap?

>> No.3743596

Because aside from worse graphics licensed sports game 95 edition is essentially the same as licensed sports game 96 edition is essentially the same as licensed sports 2016 edition.

Nobody is gonna pay much for any retro version when they get a better experience just by going down to gamestop and buying a second hand of copy of Licensed Sports Game: Current Year Minus One Edition.

>> No.3743616

>>3743581

Unironically Final Lap, it's part of a good series and way less common than Contra. That wasn't a good example for your point, if you had said a really shitty budget racing game like NES version of Bill Elliot Nascar Challenge or Days of Thunder would be a better comparison

There's nothing wrong with liking sport titles desu.

It's mostly what >>3741974 said. Retro-gamers are pretty much unanimously nerds, and nerds don't tend to be into sports all that much.

The people who tend to be into sports would rather get the newest version with all the up-to-date players and teams. As even if there were greater mechanical differences, this people are, at least for videogames, too casual to notice them.
I imagine a small niche of nostalgic sport-games people exists, but I would imagine they're a VERY small group of people.

I mean I feel a similar way about games like Koei tecmo's franchises. I might wanna have all the Dynasty Warrior games or all the Nobunaga's Ambition games for completion sake but honestly if I did had them all I would probably only play the newest one.

Or the newest Monster Hunter, or only the latest Call of Duty, games that have TOO many versions with small differences between each other just tend to be straight up upgrades of the last game (Except for shit like Assassin's Creed that decided to start removing features as well as adding with each new installment...I fucking hate desu).

Sport games like >>3740953 or the Mario sport titles are pretty timeless tho. I always preferred Mario Strikers to FIFA.

>> No.3743776

I love arcade sports game desu, nba jam, super sidekicks, super baseball 2020 etcetc dont care for anything realistic though.
