Astal pushes the Saturn's hardware? I thought it wasn't anything more complex than something like Rayman.
On Saturn I think Virtua Fighter 2 and Panzer Dragoon Zwei are some of the best showcasing of Saturn's 3D capabilities. It was possible to get good 3D on the system, but I guess it took a lot of effort. There's an interview with the PD Zwei director and he said making Zwei was really challenging and hard.
I don't know what kind of magic AM2 used with VF2 on Saturn, it even runs at 1 extra frame than the arcade version. Only downside is the backgrounds and maybe the sound a bit, but the game itself, the animations and controls are incredible.
On 2D, Capcom exploited the Saturn, although using the extra RAM. Vampire Savior and SFA3 are incredible.

I agree on Yoshi's Island for SNES but like Capcom's 2D ports on Saturn, Yoshi's Island uses the extra help of the mario chip (I think it was called?).
For non-enhanced carts SNES games that pushed it there's most of Natsume games, especially gundam endless duel and wild guns.
DKC games also, all look stunning and no extra chip.
And of course, Pilotwings.

For N64, I'll say Wave Race 64 was outstanding, peope tend to forget about this one due to SM64 and OOT outshining everything else, but fuck, WR64 is still amazing to play and look at, despite the low poly models, the game looks great, especially the water.

While it's not a graphically impressive game by any means, I feel Bio Metal deserves an honorable mention of sorts for being one of the very few SNES action games that can run more than 4 objects at a time without slowing down to an absolute crawl.

As hard as it may be to believe, the original Famicom Dankey Kang port really pushed the limits of the new console when it came before developers learned so many neat programming tricks and used hardware assistance.

No mention of Gunstar Heroes?

Gunstar Heroes.

The game literally rapes the frame render output rate of the genesis in certain parts, and it's not for bad coding.

I'm acquainted with the dude doing the technical stuff in the Mizzurna project. He's very good as PSX hacking, but he doesn't communicate much and he tends to be quite laconic when he does. If he hasn't said anything about the project, that doesn't really mean anything.

He *probably* will finish it, although I won't be holding my breath.

I've been trying to find out as much about Tempo but I hit a roadblock. The 32x was released in the US November '94 and the earliest prototype we have access to dates to December '94. The game shipped in Japan on March of '95. We already know a lot of 32x games seem to be Genesis leftovers and Tempo looks to be one of them. Look at this footage. The hud is different, Katy has a walking animation when she touches the ground, and the flower is different. Notice how the screen is dark is and Tempo looks depressed before hitting the flower? That behavior never made it into the 32x game but found its way into the Game Gear title instead.

Keisuke Abe's website had a workography (no longer available) that listed all the games he was involved with including a brief summary of each one. He mentioned that Super Tempo was them using all the ideas they didn't get to implement in the first game. That gives me enough info to assume they were rushed to release. It has all the signs of something that isn't exactly ready. If we pretend this had been for a Nintendo console, the Super Mario Club likely would have pressured them to add more levels or replay value but that's just my way of looking at things. Sega had testers for that sort of thing and they supposedly gave as much feedback as they could. Who knows what kind of suggestions they sent to the team?
