If you play more than just the first few stages, you realize it's more than that.
Kid Icarus has vertical and also side-scrolling stages, more reminiscent of games like Castlevania than Metroid.
The dungeons are like a mix of Zelda II and Metroid though.

OP is just trying to bait as much as he can. Probably tried Kid Icarus on an emulator, got frustrated because of the high difficulty and low health bar and came to vent here.

Don't talk about shit you weren't around for. Kid Icarus was ine of the first games I ever owned and several of my friends also had copies. It was a million seller.

Kid Icarus was seen as a sister game to Metroid, was popular enough to get cameos in Tetris and F1, and Pit was a major character in Captain N, and the game gor a sequel in the Gameboy. The game featured in the Nintendo Power guide that fucking everyone had.

Was it Mario bros.? No, but people were very aware of Kid Icarus at the time.

Well, you made a post about it.
Just keep trying, once you get past the first couple levels, and if you don't suck at gathering the powerups, game should be a little less punishing. By the end of the game you will have upgraded health bar and arrows and the game won't be as intimidating, I promise.
At least try to make it to the first dungeon and try to beat it, if by then you're not hooked in the game, then just move on I guess.

step aside trollkid

Did you guys know that Miyamoto's love for his vertical platformer (kid Icarus) directly resulted in the US version of Super Mario Brothers 2?

It's true. DDP started as a co-op vert stacking platformer that Miyamoto liked and suggested the expansions to then fell in love with so much he believed it should be a truer sequel to SMB

I'll tell you what happened in the 80's, Kid Icarus got ONE game, which was a flash in the pan game that Nintendo would put out just like Donkey Kong Jr or Clu Clu Land or Ice Climbers, you know other games that were forgotten shortly afterwards but you'll probably pretend were big huge deals in their day just because Nintendo made them because despite claiming to be far older you still defend your favorite video games on the internet like you're still 12 years old. The huge difference between Kid Icarus and something like Zelda or Castlevania or Megaman is that those games actually got SEQUELS, which kept them relevant in the public eye. But of course you'll just flippantly deny this very basic fact and keep insisting your shit nostalgia for this piece of crap and it's sudden public interest is a measure of it being a good lasting game, rather than it getting a shoutout from Smash Bros (FUN FACT: the reason Nintendo even included Pit or Ice Climbers in Smash Bros was because they wanted to revive interest in old, one shot NES games that were forgotten. Hmmmm isn't that interesting since according to you Kid Icarus was always a huge multimillion dollar franchise beloved by everyone ever)

Here you go you big fucking babies, I actually had to go out and show you how obscure this piece of shit was. First image on the left shows that Sakurai doesn't choose retro characters based on popularity, just on whether or not they'd be easy to make into fighters, image on the right is a third party source that says that yes - this game series was obscure until it got a popularity boost from Brawl and so that's why they started actually making new sequels to this garbage.

In other words, go cry yourselves to sleep, manchildren.

When I was a kid I watched Captain N. I don't know how popular it was throughout the country, but where I lived some other kids I knew would talk about it. Nintendo was just a general interest kind of thing for me, I wasn't obsessive about the NES and I never played Kid Icarus, but I did know about it. When I got a Nintendo Power subscription after the SNES came out, I do recall "Super Kid Icarus" being a pretty "wanted" game, so the original had to pique some interest. Since it didn't happen, I think that is probably why people are saying Kid Icarus is some obscure game character. Kind of like if Super Metroid didn't happen (then there would possibly only be Metroid on NES and GB, like Kid Icarus on NES and GB). Concerning the kids I knew who did play Kid Icarus on NES, they probably didn't end up caring too much about games overall, but if you'd ask them I'm sure they would remember Kid Icarus without his Smash Bros appearances.. Yeah yeah, these are just my experiences, but I'd imagine they are fairly similar to many who grew up during that time period with the NES.
