I can understand why people wouldn't count this as their favorite title, but I don't understand the hate that the game draws. I feel like return of samus came the closest to the original concept and style that the creators were going for. The soundtrack is sparse for a reason. It is fucking startling to be rolling around with sparse blips to nearly trip over a Metroid molting into some sort of terrible flying dragon. Watching that Metroid count going down while the Metroids keep getting fiercer thinking fuck, something terrible is around the corner. All that in a tiny little game boy cart.

The point of an opinion is that you're supposed to form it yourself. Basing it entirely on other people's experiences is pathetic.

What kills 7 for me is the materia system.

What it ultimately does is removes all individuality from your characters. Everyone can fill any role and if you're forced to use a character you haven't been you can load them up with your best materia and they're suddenly just like everyone else.

I recently started playing Super Metroid. I grew up with the Prime's but was born in the era of the NES/SNES. I just didn't get that many games for it. Super Metroid is basically a 2D Prime. I love it.

Just because this is a board about old games doesn't mean we should sit here and cirlejerk about how "THE SERIES IS SHIT NOW THE OLD GAMES ARE BETTER".

As this is /vr/ instead of /v/, maybe this will actually sink in.

Prime, despite being a fucking fantastic game, dropped the ball on one key point of Metroid, which is the exploration and the player's ability to do just that. I know you immediately vehemently disagree, but just hold on real quick and let me explain.

Barring the artifact hunt at the end of the game (which at this point you've unlocked everywhere you can go minus the final area) everything is in a straight sequence from beginning to end. However, the game does an amazing job at hiding this by making large open areas, and by hiding it under all that top notch atmosphere. It also pays homage to Super with said atmosphere, and with the music. But it does block your progress off until you get x item each step of the way. There's only ever one correct way to go, and you'll get there the same way in every run of the game. The only way way to avoid this, is to utilize a glitch (A glitch that was patched out in Trilogy).

This is in stark contrast to Super, where people forget the proper sequence all the time, and the original Metroid, which has no real sequence besides get the morph ball, get a pack of missiles, get the bombs, kill Ridley and Kraid, go to Tourian. Or Zero Mission, although its more structured in that one instead of just giving the player the tools and letting them go nuts.

Echoes and Corruption (barring the temple keys and batteries hunts) have the same problem.

I'm not saying Prime is bad, it's just a bad translation of Super to 3D. Great game that pays nice homage to it though.

No, the big detractor to Prime is the fact that Samus is missing many of her key abilities, can't run, she is stuck in a first person view and a much larger focus on backtracking and combat than other games.

All that said, the game is hardly bad. I'd still say Prime 1 is one of the top 4 Metroid games easily. But people need to stop claiming its a 'perfect transition of Super Metroid into 3D'. because its missing a huge chunk of what made the original 2D games good. As well, most people seem to be confusing gameplay mechanics and 'exploration' with graphics, UI and design. The latter of which are what people obsess over Prime for.

In response to the OP, Metroid II is good, it has tons of improvements/add-ons from Metroid. Not sure why it is seen as the black sheep of the series because it is still a really good game.

Nothing can top Prime.

I just wish Nintendo hadn't fucked up and taken development away from Retro. They stayed so faithful to the series while still mixing up the formula.
