The flaking metal from your braces coats the cartridge pins thus providing better conductivity.

This q-tip meme needs to die.

The fucking fibres tear off and clog up the connectors worse than when you started. Get some proper lint-free foam-tipped cleaning swabs for fuck's sake.

Just get actual electric contact cleaners. WD-40 makes one, it works great.

Someone should really make one of these that has an angled tip

90% of the problem is a bad seat in the console.

Its not about cleaning, its about getting a better seat.

>> No.3729815

>>3729808
Pretty much.

The pin connectors are designed to scratch the surface of the pin contacts each time the cart is inserted to break through the resistive oxide layer on the surface of the metal and get to the juicy, conductive metal inside. Same principle behind is at work with PCI slots on your desktop.

By blowing and reinserting, you are mostly giving it another chance to get a good seat and scratch.

I don't know about every console, but definitely the case for my NES.

>> No.3729868

Seriously though

>put cart in
>doesn't work
>"haha, the blow thing is just a meme, I'll just carefully take it out and insert again"
>still doesn't work
>try 2 or 3 more times, doesn't work
>finally blow
>it works

I remember when I was a kid, at kid's birthday parties there were always magician guys doing tricks and what not, and they always asked us to blow into the hat or whatever for the tricks to work.

I don't know, maybe it's some kind of ancient ritual that somehow stayed in our subconscious and it actually does something?

Is it really the blowing that does it, though? I tested systems for a year, and found that I didn't need to blow into the cart. It was more like heaving into it while forming a seal around it with my lips.

It worked every time, which led me to believe that the connectors simply need to be warmed up, hence the heaving.

Can anyone else here vouch, or am I just retarded?

>> No.3729973

bend back the pins of your cartridge slot.

>> No.3729990

>>3729952
You're right, but it's not the warming up that does it.
Blowing works because the spit in your breath covers the pins and helps with contact.

>> No.3729996

White vinegar works way better than alcohol in my experience. I think you're supposed to do one round with alcohol after because it can be corrosive.

Maybe the spit is temporarily improving the connection between the contacts?

EXPLAIN THIS

>> No.3730137

A lot of times it's not about how clean the cartridge is, but its placement within the console. I have to press on the right side of games a little bit to hit the sweet spot of my NES system.

>> No.3730194

Is it bad to use an alcohol wipe with a tiny watch skrewdriver to clean the inside of the pins?

3730201

>>3729494
The reason is because you have corroded/exposed traces and the moisture from your breath lingers on the cartridge and doesn't evaporate therefore completing the circuit. Whereas rubbing alcohol evaporates almost instantly.

>> No.3730213

>>3729996
Yes vinegar is corrosive and literally dissolves copper, copper acetate, you'd have to be a fool do that on a cart you cared about

>> No.3731382

>>3729494
It's usually the other way around for me.

>> No.3731396

I hear a lot of the time the problem is just the cartridge not setting properly because of the stupid front loading mechanism

>> No.3733105

>>3729494
It's not the cartridge blowjob that fixed it, it's cart jiggling. You just put it in the slot at the correct angle this time. Old slots work better when the pins are only just making contact, not shoved all the way in.

I can't explain it, but I can explain that people in here claiming that blowing into it will corrode or break the cartridge/system are complete retards because my original NES from 1983 still works as do all my original games from doing exactly that.

>> No.3737672

I don't believe any of us are xenomorphs so I don't see how spit could do that.
