Well it started in the '80s with stuff like Garbage Pail Kids and continued into the '90s, like your triangles and squiggly lines. Nickelodeon was probably responsible for spurring its popularity further with their slime and gak. Then also punk/grunge broke and it kinda went along with that gross stuff (see any Butthole Surfers album cover art).

That show never resonated with me in any way what so ever as a kid. The monster designs weren't cool or interesting, they were just odd. It was impossible to relate to anything that went on. Overall: Dull as fuck show.

I love every excuse to post pic related. I saw this in a magazine back in the day and it's been burned into my brain ever since.

PO'ed would be another good choice, it's got the infamous walking butt enemies that fart projectiles at you.
