Previous thread >>3701596
This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Hello /crt/ guys! I have a problem and I hope you can help me. And sorry for my bad english

I have this old Himitsu TV (IDK if it's a debranded one) with image problem: the image looks stretched at both sides (left & right). It does'nt have in menu options to adjust the image size, so I think it may be a component problem, but I'm not sure.

It didn't had that problem before. The image was ok, but from one day to another, the problem came.

Maybe here are some experienced guys that can help me.

Thanks in advance :)

It looks like that monitor has a Y/C input meaning S-video try this cable. It's a cheap price but it's the legit one. I've bought two.

The largest 4:3 VGA PC CRT monitor is 21" (viewable) although you might want to settle for 20" which is easier to find.

I have seen curved 16", are there any larger?

If the monitor has the RGB/Component card, the easiest thing to do would be to buy an (RGB) SCART cable for the Genesis, and a SCART to BNC breakout cable to connect it to the monitor.

Usually, yes. I do need to get a new one though, this couple year old chinese one is falling apart on me.

>>3724758
Depends on what you'd consider a "VGA PC CRT".

There's the Gateway Destination monitors, which go up to something like 36''. And of course the NEC XM/XP Monitors, and the Mitsubishi Megaviews, though those admittedly don't actually have standard VGA connectors.

Does black frame insertion reduce motion blur on CRTs too, or just LCDs? I know motion blur on CRTs is caused by long phosphor decay time; do the black frames just give the old frame more time to go away before the each new one is displayed? And do the black frames (on a high-refresh monitor) give the illusion that the monitor is dimmer overall, or does it seem about as bright as without the black frames?

well, color me surprised... I bought the cheapest hdmi-vga converter and it even works with full color range that you can't get over component. My old hdfury can't do that...
The thing with PS4 is that it doesn't output enough juice over HDMI so you need either a powered converter (usually over USB), or go through a device that has give enough power like an AV reciever.

I was looking at the VSC 500 to replace my current set-up, but I'm not sure it's really worth it. It would mean having to run separate audio, for one thing, which isn't horrible but still more wires coming from my laptop. And I won't be able to get 240p for emulating 5th gen without yet another device such as an Emotia or Rxi. I think... Maybe someone with a better understanding could confirm that last bit though.

I don't see how you're going to avoid running separate audio in any case. There's no SCART or HDMI on the PVM and the inbuilt speaker (assuming it even has one) is shit and mono.

If you really must have 240p yes you will need to add an Rxi after the VSC or try to track down one of the handful of Emotias still remaining in the wild. You probably wouldn't be able to notice any difference between 240p and 480I on a 5" 250tvl screen though.

Sorry 'bout that.

It's Tails' Adventure for the Game Gear. Specifically, a modified version of it for the Master System that changes the colors to work better with the SMS's palette(since the GameGear uses a large one) and maps the controls to play better with console controllers(by default, it seems game gear stuff maps certain things to player 2 if being run on a Master System/Mega Drive)

tl;dr: Tails' Adventure Master System Conversion.

Was also trying to mess around with a GG Mega Man conversion, but the controls for that are still buggy.

You are risking a couple different things by doing this.

Firstly, the possibility of bugs living in the set. Secondly, it was very likely left out in the weather at some point before it was picked up from the curbside. Or it may have been stored outdoors in a large bin at some intermediary facility like a local township yard prior to being taken to an actual recycling center. Third, being discarded means unlikely to have been handled with any sort of care by anyone who had to move it right up to the point you spot it.

Point being you have no way of knowing the thing either works or is otherwise undamaged internally, and you may be taking the thing right back where you got it. But if you have the free time and no other options, then I guess go for it.

I have of 2 pic-related, one which I got off of craigslist, and the other ebay. They took a while to get. It's a great TV for both games and movies. If you are patient, there are better options. If craigslist or ebay is not showing anything in your area, look up other similar sites and apps. There are many.

I have read through threads where dudes leave the tv on all the damned time just to keep it warmed up. I myself keep both of mine next to radiators, more because it worked out that way than by design though.

Anyway, if you search old AVSforum and racketboy threads, you will find lots of info. Some pertaining to your particular issue.

I mean the Famicom internally generates composite, which is turned into RF (which is still a kind of composite video with audio), and then the VCR picks up that channel, (re)modulates it to composite with a split audio channel, and then pumps if out of it's composite out and audio out ports.

It's not an ideal signal chain (though it is the best you can do on an unmodified original Famicom), but it is real composite because there's no color-space conversion or anything like that happening AFAIK. It's not like the French NES making 'RGB' from the internal composite signal, or making colors out of data that isn't there, it's just versions of composite being converted back and forth.

I only have one fishbowl, and it is obviously older than my 4 flat-screen CRTs. But the only noticeable problem I have with it's geometry is a slight tilt and no options to fix that in the service menu. So eventually I'll open it up and adjust the yoke for that.

By comparison, all 4 of my flat-screen sets needed lots of tweaks either in the service menu or yoke adjustments or both despite being no where near as old.

I think it's probably a combination of both that fishbowls retain geometry better over time and that the imperfections on their convex screen is less noticeable.

As an aside, after getting used to playing on a flat-screen, initially playing anything on a curved one feels like I put on a pair of glasses with the wrong prescription. Not exactly nauseating, but a bit unsettling.

I've had something similar happen with my OEV203 when having systems on my component switcher running at the same time as certain ones on my SCART switcher. Pretty sure the reason this happens in my case is a ground loop somewhere, since I run the audio from my SCART switch into said Component Switch to simplify things. Perhaps give a look to how you have things wired up and you might be able to get an idea of where the issue is.

Alternatively, if that's Game Boy Interface, and in particular the Ultra Low Latency version, it could be a sync related issue. I know I've experience such a problem before, and just use LL instead to avoid it.

Anon who wanted to hook up his digital converter box to crt via component.

Well my antenna finally came in and I hooked it up through a splitter to my new converter box. I hooked up the component cables into my switch, and my converter box to a power conditioner.

>power on
>scrambled image

I went through basic troubleshooting procedures(turning on/off checking all connections) then I started wondering if it was the switch or power conditioner. Finally today I decided to hook up composite straight from the converter box to CRT and it's working fine.

My suspicion is that component on this converter box wants to run at something higher than 480p, like maybe 720p and thats why I get the scrambled image when hooked up via component.

Any ideas? I really want to make use of component since I have an 8 input switch that supports component.

This can be adjusted by opening the back and adjusting the yoke. You will never get it perfect, so get that out of your head right away. I have two FV310s, and I love them, but they are consumer sets, not professional monitors. Accept the limitations here. Yours already looks decent except for that horizontal bow that all FV310s seem to develop over time due to the sagging yoke.

Anyway, set all or most of your service menu options to the center position before adjusting the sagging yoke. Just follow the service manual. It isn't hard, but will take you some time, and can be nerve racking. Make sure you have a large mirror, a compass, a Phillips #2 screw-driver and a strong light source. Good luck.

>> No.3736970

>>3736962
>, but they are consumer sets, not professional monitors.
The geometry sucks because they're flat. If you want good geometry get a real (consumer) Trini.

>> No.3736982

>>3736970
I concede that flats do not hold geometry as well over time as curved sets. However, they do provide some counterbalance to that. For one thing, it is a lot easier to find flats with component input, and secondly flats usually have a far more advanced service menu which helps in dealing with the geometry issues if they are minor.

Also, sagging yokes are the same on both, and will develop over time. It is just more noticeable on flat than on curved because the convex shape can mask the horizontal bow and other tell-tale signs much better. But they are still there.

Anyway, as I posted earlier, once you get accustomed to a flat screen, looking at a convex one for any period of time make me feel like I just put a pair of glasses on with the wrong prescription.

But yeah, I'm pretty happy with my current set-up. So I'm personally done searching for 'the best' because I'm good for now. Also, after hunting and collecting CRTs for a while now and filling a room with them, I realize they all have trade-offs and there is no best. Even if you find yourself a 32" BVM, you have made a concession in some regard. Even if it's a minor one like having black bars on the sides when playing 4:3 content.

tl;dr - it's okay to settle. No, really. Shit isn't that serious.

>How do you fix a sagging yoke?

The yoke is held in place against 4 to 6 rubber wedges by a ring clamp on the neck of the tube. Over time and probably after being moved and what have you, the yoke doesn't sit as tight as it did in it's original orientation. Rubber tends to warp with heat and cold, as well, even if only a little within a climate controlled containment.

Anyway, all you are doing is loosening the ring clamp and retracting the yoke so that you can re-seat it forward against those rubber wedges in a way that attempts to rectify any picture degradation.

I do this while displaying a 1.33 grid pattern with a "Safe" border demarking over-scan. If the rubber wedges won't allow you to make the proper adjustment because they are glued to the tube, then I remove them. This is more difficult though, as it requires you to hold the yoke in place with one hand while you set the wedges with your free hand. Re-tighten the ring clamp when you're satisfied, and finally give each wedge a final push to make certain they are tight and won't shift. If you have to re-glue or tape them to get them to stay in place, it is likely you will be doing this again down the line sooner than later. Do it right the first time so that glue or tape is optional and not necessary.

Anyway, I'm just a mook not a technician, and this is just how I do it. I may be talking out of my ass, but it has worked for me on a few CRTs now.

That is, there are AMD 300 cards and Nvidia 900 cards with DVI-I, but none on the 400 and 1000 series.

Is the CRT that features the NES an actual TV?
Is it based on an actual TV?

I imagine it's generic one made up for the picture, but it's pretty nice looking.

>> No.3740074

>>3739823

I always assumed they were so expensive because of all the controls that were implemented in them for broadcast work.

A specialized monitor specifically made for retro use should be able to beat a pvm or any of the top tier stuff and it'd be a real easy sell to anyone looking for one. People coming in late won't have to do research just to be disappointed and even those with a good one already would more than welcome something newer especially as more and more change hands and get abused.

>> No.3740107

>>3740074
There is zero chance of this happening. Professional Monitors were not made to cater to a niche clientele anywhere near as small or personal as the retro scene. They were produced for expansive industries with immense budgets, by comparison to the average individual hobbyist.

And now that the technology has moved on, allowing both cheaper and easier to produce higher resolution monitors without the short-comings inherent to CRT-technology, I find it impossible to believe that any company that could do so would actually consider making the investment necessary for such a small, relatively low-return market.

Not trying to be a dick. Just realistic.

OLED screen wrapped around the back of a curved CRT TV's glass. Scanlines and shit would need to be added in >software and upscaling would introduce lag, but it would be a curved screen with the same color depth and deep blacks as a CRT (since OLEDs are emissive, unlike LCDs). >> No.3742490

>>3742460
Depends, I myself use scart cables with RCA breakout for audio, that way you get the best audio (without modding) and don't have to care about shielding. Otherwise you should ask if the seller has shielded his cables. Also keep in mind that it should say RGB in the title (otherwise the cable is worthless)

>> No.3742515

Speaking from my own experience, if you use a decent composite to RF converter box, you should get a signal comparable to composite from any source (mono audio though). Since all the analog TV signals have been turned off in the US, there's less interference now. I used a much older RF only set (twin-lead, not even coax) through college (07-11) with totally acceptable, to me, results.

Nothing, really. I've heard of people removing the protective film on the front of their tube plenty of times. It won't be there to prevent glare anymore, but as long as you don't play the thing right by an open window in direct sunlight, it shouldn't really matter.

Hi guys, currently having an issue with a Samsung Syncmaster 997df that's driving me insane.

So basically this thing can do a resolution of 1920x1440. This is desirable because my main display (an FW900) is at 2304x1440. However, no matter what I do, the Syncmaster refuses to actually run at 1440p. Now, all the display driver software and whatnot are REPORTING that it's running at 1920x1440, but it's very clearly not - text and windows are obviously bigger if I move them from the main monitor over to the syncmaster, and if I try running Retroarch at that resolution, most of it is offscreen. I've tried many different things at this point - a bunch of different DVI adapters (all with dual band analog support) and plugging it directly into the VGA port on my motherboard. Nothing is working, both my nvidia drivers, my OS resolution control, and the integrated graphics drivers report it as 1920x1440, but it obviously isn't running at that. What do I do?

I have an SLI set-up. Each card has two DVI ports, only one of which on each card supports analog output. This was not a problem since Nvidia's drivers allow you to activate all displays, so I had DVI-A to VGA converters on each card going to each display. They're both the exact same converter, and like I said, the FW900 isn't having problems, but the Syncmaster is. I tried swapping them around and it didn't work, so eventually I gave up and just tried using integrated graphics for the Syncmaster by plugging it into the VGA port on my motherboard. Now, according to the manual, that port supports up to 1600p resolutions so that shouldn't be an issue. However, like I said, I'm still getting the same problem where the drivers are reporting that it's running at a resolution that it clearly isn't.

It's for a capture device which can't do RGB, which I thought was fine, but also no 240p over component video. I'm sure there's a workaround for analog audio using line in, though. Is OSSC available for sale? Last I checked, there was a waiting list and one guy working on them TBA on everything. MLIG said that there were issues with lots of capture devices with OSSC to begin with, I'd probably sooner pony up for the framemeister because I know that would work great.

Well, pic related is winning right now. My capture card accepts 240p over S-video just fine, so even if this is a bad solution, it's a lot cheaper than buying an OSSC or framemeister just for recordings.

Nah, as long as the phosphor coating in the tube is okay, it's good. I know that professional tubes were rated for at least 100,000 hours, but I don't know about consumer sets.

When a tube dies, the picture rapidly gets dark. You will begin to have trouble seeing anything and will have to crank up the contrast and brightness. I have had an old consumer set slowly die on me when I was younger. It was a second-hand 19" and at first I hardly noticed. But soon I was having trouble and fiddling with the user menu to no avail.

What >>3746876 sounds like is maybe just in need of new capacitors or something with the voltage regulator. While it is doubtful he knows how to fix it himself, it can be fixed. I am currently in the process of learning to re-cap and such myself in the hopes of keeping my own CRTs alive for as long as I can. It's not super-hard, and you can find legitimate TV repair manuals because Repair technician used to be a career. That's not, that's a high-end video monitor, and here in France the people who bought them are smart enough to know that they can still be great video monitors for people who are interested in older video hardware, even though the demand isn't that high, and sell them without pricing them too high (not the usual "I know what I got" like you'd get from boomers selling rusted out muscle car shells in the US, because they know they wont sell them if the price is too high, the demand is there, but it's small), instead of just dumping them because "they're just old tellys".

I'm going to make some homebrew cables for myself because of the outrageous pricing.
Will I regret making cables straight to bnc, without scart/scart adapter in between? I don't really own enough consoles to warrant a scart switch, so I'm pretty sure a [insert console port] to 4 way bnc would streamline things nicely, although I guess I lose out on versatility a little.
Thoughts? Anyone done this?

You could do VGA so you could use a VGA switcher. I'm not 100% sure, but I think those can be found cheaper than BNC switches.

Either are options I have considered.

Is the HD RetroVision good for converting RGB to Component?

Or are there other better RGB to Component converters for the Super Famicom?

I am planning to use it to play my Super Famicom on my Samsung CRT TV from 2009 which only supports Component, Composite and S-VIdeo.

Also, how do I know if a signal is 240p, 480i or 480p without a notification saying which resolution it is?

My TV doesn't show the resolution of the signal for whatever reason, the only thing it shows is whether it's Component, Composite or S-Video and if the sound is mono or stereo.

>Is the HD RetroVision good for converting RGB to Component?
It's pretty good for how convenient they are.
>Or are there other better RGB to Component converters for the Super Famicom?
There are better solutions, such as upscalers.
>Also, how do I know if a signal is 240p, 480i or 480p without a notification saying which resolution it is?
240p and 480i are synonymous. 480i is referred to as Standard Definition (SD) and was a broadcast standard. 240p is half as many lines as 480i but refreshed/redrawn twice as fast (progressive). 480p is often referred to as Enhanced Definition (ED). 720p and 1080i are High Definition (HD).

If you're interested in this stuff, read up on the history of broadcast television technology. It's pretty neat how dudes over half a century ago were transmitting video data both over wires and wirelessly. Not a lot changed until analog transmitters were phased out around 2009.

Thank you for all the tips, today i managed to get a rca to bnc converter and test the screen. I hooked up my ps2 (sorry for no retro) which should send a 576i 50Hz signal. There are periods while the image seems to be ok, some other times it seems to be unstable (i am not talking about the normal interlaced flickering). I guess i'll have to test it further and try different settings. That's the main reason that holds me to go down the rgb road, getting the bnc adaptor costed me nothing while i should spend time and money on the rgb. Moreover the seller is willing to take the hantarex back for the pvm (which has not an rgb input) if it gives problems

BNC is fine. And if you ever need to switch you can just grab some phoenix connectors and one of these:

So, how bad are these things for a quick/dirty way to do composite to VGA?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/122278611540?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Since it's staying analog, does that mitigate the addition of input lag? I remember I had an old one in college I used for like, PS1 and whatnot, but I can't remember what the lag was like. I'm just trying to play NES on a VGA monitor on the cheap.

It will scale the video, defeating the purpose of using a CRT. It will also look like shit. Just use a composite CRT TV.

Depends on how much it was used and how bad the market is for decent monitors in your area. Also how poor you are. I would pay $50 for it personally, maybe more if the seller was stubborn.

What's the relative quality of the YPbPr on a sony pvm vs rgb. I know rgb is a more direct connection, but is the difference between connections noticeable?

>> No.3750675

>>3750658
Depends on the source, but the quality you're going to get from Component is essentially the same as RGB.

Do remember though, that the two signals have to be configured and calibrated for separately, so comparing the same source over the two separate signals will not look the same unless said calibration is done.

There are technically models out there which can generate Component internally, but it not only requires modding to actually make use of but it's also extremely touchy/hit-or-miss on how well it actually works on any given set.

>>3750683
If you're referencing the HD-Retrovision Component cables, those are transcoding RGB to Component.

But, if you're having to adapt to BNC, you'd be better off just sticking to the native RGB that the monitor you're using presumably supports.

>>3750754
>2009
What model is your CRT? It's possible something made so late could be an HDCRT, even lacking HDMI or otherwise.

I have no experience with them personally, but the Retrovision cables are apparently pretty decent. If you only plan to get/make use of component for you SNES, they'd be a decent buy if you can actually get a hold of them, but if you think there's any chance that you'll want to use another system or more over component as well, you'd be better off buying a standalone RGB-Component transcoder.
