If you were a kid during the 90s, and didn't own both Mega Drive and SNES, you didn't have a full childhood, simple as that.

I've seen Sonic-like games better than Sonic, but Mario clones often fail at being good games.
Why so?

Had a SNES at home, about 4 games but rented a lot, loved renting Super Mario RPG.

Had a Genesis at my grandmother's house in another city, where we visited often. Had like 15 game, my favorites being Shining Force/Ronald McDonald/Streets of Rage, while also renting Castlevania and Gold! Pirates.

I never understood the bitter rivalry until I realized some people only had one console.

I like both, sonic fucked up in the 3D , mario fucked up in the repetitive shit and nintendo uses him to secure sales, an example is mario galaxy, I love the game but was it really necesary to have mario in there? The gameplay has nothing to do with mario save for the jump and the collectathon ,It could have been it's own original IP regardless

Mario was how I got my start playing video games. Watching older kids and my dad's drunk friends play it taught me all the tricks. But I got a Genesis with Sonic 2 and I've logged more hours in that game than any other.

So Sonic hands down. Non-NES Mario is something I only got into recently. I appreciate it but I don't enjoy it as much as Sonic.

I owned a Genesis and SNES, but only had a handful of games for each. It was hard to convince my parents to buy me tons of games, but I also didn't really want a lot, either. As a kid, I spent more time with each game and appreciated each game a lot more than I do now.

Plus, borrowing and renting were a much bigger thing. I still played a wide variety of games while never usually owning more than 5 or 6 for each system I had.

I have had the opposite experience. I haven't really played a platformer that approached how fun I feel when I play the Sonic Genesis trilogy(at least 2 and 3K). I like Jazz Jackrabbit and Rocket Knight Adventures, but I prefer Sonic 3K to any imitator.

While I think Mario 3 is a awesome game and to a lesser extent World is great too. I would be lying if I said I wouldn't rather play Kid Chameleon.

SMB3 on the NES. I prefer the gameplay of the NES titles and it's the best of them.

That was literally the whole point. You have to build up enough momentum and you wouldn't hit every obstacle. Especially in S3&K, where you could race through almost every act rather quickly aside from one very famous obstacle.
