I'm one of the people who have been talking about this above. I'm not a furry and in fact I find furries somewhat disgusting, but I still want Willy to have sex with Jenny, even though it's not my fetish. This is actually BECAUSE I enjoy the show--the characters are likable enough and the acting strong enough that the little hint of romance between them appeals to me on a human level. (It's still "straight shota" or some such since they appear to have an age difference, but I claim that that doesn't count as a fetish, since it's really just plain old sex.)

Since we've gotten off topic here: I do also appreciate how I don't seem to be seeing anything in the show that conflicts with what I remember from the game. The designs and abilities all seem to fit... well except that I'm still waiting for the episode where Deadeye shows he can walk on walls. Maybe that was in the comic though?

9 days and 22 hours according to the OP, and i am the OP, i just made this thread because i finished (that day) Bucky O'Hare on HARD! passcode mode and felt like bragging about it but then i just posted the pic and just "Bucky O'Hare" in the post.

The game is a legit 10/10, every character feels useful and covers their own niche, and like in megaman, some characters are direct counters to whatever boss you are facing, though if you master Jenny's Plasma Ball you can annihilate every boss but the two final bosses, good luck killing the core with a shitstorm of projectiles and lasers raining at you, this is why Willy was better, he could just charge his thing and blast shit away. The music is FUCKING AMAZING but i think that was already mentioned itt and the gameplay while being inspired by megaman (and it shows by the existence of Yoku block sections in the Cell stage, god i was stuck here because my controller's arrow pad was acting weird) its still unique and not exactly comparable to megaman, similar to Journey to Silius, the game also plays like a megaman-like game but it has its own niches and fucking hard as fuck bosses if you don't have ammo.

I played through Journey to Silius for the first time just recently. It's good and worth playing, but I think it doesn't measure up to this sort of classic Konami (or Capcom) jumpin-and-shootin game. It's kinda rough. There are too many unfair surprises, and the ammo system is too limiting; it just punishes you for playing around and experimenting during stages, and encourages you to use the boring normal gun until you reach a boss. Also there isn't as much inventiveness in stage and enemy design as in those other games.

I only had a problem with that on the 4th stage where i was really forced to use some weapons to at least reach the boss with more health, i'd rather fight bosses without ammo than without health (as in, enough health to not die in one touch, god the stage 3 core boss is a pain in the dick) and i also had luck to get ammo drops when i destroy the robots

Another thing I'm liking about this show, although that shot doesn't especially show it off, is the consistency with which they draw Willy as being a small giant compared to most of the furries. I don't know why I like this but I do. They don't make anything of it either. It's just an odd little disparity between the universes: Rabbit people and duck people and such are small, while baboons and adult humans are big.

Also I like how they keep him in that inherited baboon suit.

It's just a nice, substantial sort of a show. I mean the stories are simple adventures for kids, but they aren't simple to the point of laziness. There are points where they'll show something that doesn't make sense, without any comment, and only a explain a scene or two later that this was because Bucky was tricking the toads by pretending somebody was in one place when they were in another, or that the heroes' ship was destroyed when it wasn't, or whatever. And they trust the viewer to keep up. It's nice. And they'll fake the viewer out to keep things from getting resolved in too obvious a way, like when the creators of Komplex are found, which seems like a huge deal, but... it turns out they don't know anything at all that can help Bucky stop him.

Yeah I like the idea of the secret cat society with special powers and crap. And sure they may as well have a planet. But like if it's a huge secret then Willy shouldn't be able to just accidentally blunder into it by climbing a tree.

And the toads shouldn't suddenly get interested in some secret nebula thing that's involved in the cats' secret ceremony at exactly the same time as when Bucky's crew is on the cat planet to help train the cat princess for said ceremony. That's super lazy.

Also the resolution of the main conflict doesn't seem to make much sense.

They should have just stayed on the cat planet and left the toads out entirely. The episode could have been about Willy doing a real science thing to accidentally unveil some cat secret (instead of just climbing a tree and peeking over a tiny wall), and getting in big trouble for it, and having to be defended in cat court by Bucky's crew. In the end, the cats would barely be convinced to set him free, and only on condition that he act as an honorary cat for the rest of his life and in particular never mate with any creatures other than psychic cat ladies.

I am amused by older 3D cartoons. It really looks about on-par with today's student work. I guess it was just harder to work with the programs back then or maybe almost no one really knew what they were doing so anyone who could operate Softimage or 3D Studio or whatever they were using was worth hiring.

Alright I've gotten around to trying the arcade game. Thus far I've scrounged together a MAME setup and sampled the first stage. Seems fine so far.

I guess Blinky might be the hard mode character, but of course I don't really know yet. Deadeye and Jenny, at least, have weird special attacks that don't really require aiming. I think this probably will not turn out to be a finely balanced experience.

They made Jenny blow a kiss every time you wait a moment after shooting. Little out of character there, but Japan's gonna Japan.

Both this and the NES game seem awfully light on baboons, unless I'm forgetting something from the NES game.

Why the show failed? The short answer is that according to people like Neal Adams, the show had good ratings but toy line sold poorly.
The longer and more accurate version is that Hasbro screwed up when it came to how many of each character ship in a box. They decided to under-pack popular characters like Bucky and over-pack characters like Toad Air Marshall, so you might get 1 Bucky in a box but 3 Air Marshalls.
This created a huge problem because the popular characters like Bucky and Deadeye flew off the shelves, but the over-packed Air Marshall and Blinky figures clogged the pegs, leaving no room for fresh boxes of figures. Since stores had so much product that wasn't moving, they didn't order more. As a result, the Bucky O'Hare toyline failed and took the show down with it.

Had Hasbro balances their boxes better, it's very likely that we would have seen at least the next wave of figures, and likely another season of the show. But unfortunately, almost all action animation lives or dies by its toyline, so Bucky was killed after 13 episodes.

Fun fact: Bucky O'Hare failing also killed the in-development Space Usagi cartoon!

I made it further in the arcade game. The main plot has emerged (I think) and the end can't be too terribly far away. But I was overwhelmed.

Blinky's short-range cannon is better than I thought; it sucks in many situations but is able to exploit certain enemies' inability to attack you through it, or to punish you for using it.

Unrelated: It irritates me, both in this game and in the show, that toads refer to the good guys as mammals, when Deadeye is a bird. (And also, Blinky is a robot, but it sort of makes sense to disregard him.)

I did finish the series. I didn't get that impression about Bucky. It just seemed like, yeah, he's the leader because he's good at being the leader. I mean leadership can be an actual job. Why not have somebody mainly be the leader?

As for specific things he accomplished alone, not through his leadership role--uh he got into a few gunfights, and he came up with some clever plans and tricks and stuff, and I think he did something heroic by himself in their little auxiliary vehicle thingy at one point. Also in one episode he used his jumping ability, which was evidently rare even among rabbits, to cross a long gap and resolve the episode's plot. Oh and he was the group's mouthpiece when they needed to talk to the animal UN or other ship captains or whatever. He seemed good enough to me.

The others definitely have better special skills not related to planning and talking, though. Bucky's jumping ability is not that big a deal in a setting where space travel is commonplace, whereas Willy and Jenny are like demigods or something with their science magic and psi-type magic (respectively). And Deadeye and Bruiser both fight better than Bucky does, generally. Willy is just a kid and also he's only a part-time inhabitant of their universe, so he shouldn't be the leader, but Jenny could probably be the leader. She is the most well-rounded crew member and maybe also the most powerful one, although really Willy is probably the most powerful since "science" can do anything in a show like this. If they didn't have Bucky they could just have fallen back on Jenny I guess.

I've been working on buliding my own Bucky O'Hare machine for three years. I bought this and then found out that the cabinet art was super hard to come by. I finally found the control panel overlay which was the hardest part and the art kit has now been reproduced. I'm starting in on an old Tmnt cab soon and hope to have a "dedicated cabinet" done in February or March

It turns out that Jenny and Deadeye are actually harder to use well than Blinky is. Aiming turns out not to be nearly as important, in this game, as destroying things very quickly is. And Blinky is the specialist in that.

No enemy thus far seems to be difficult to beat, but occasional minor mistakes keep on dragging me down gradually over the course of a run, so I end up getting to about the same point every time. The game really wants my virtua quarters. I'll just have to be more careful.

Maybe it found a bigger audience. It would have gone out through all the normal channels for NES games (toy stores, game rental shops, whatever else), whereas to see the cartoon a person would have to have been in front of the TV at the right time. I think that when I saw it (I only caught one episode or so), it was playing especially early on a Saturday morning, earlier than I would have wanted to be awake. I watched cartoons every Saturday morning, but I never had much opportunity to get into that show. Meanwhile the game was available anytime at the video store. Maybe it was like that for other people?

>> No.3717956

Still stuck on the autoscrolling stage in the arcade game. It is very cheap. Suddenly your jump is crappy and your weapons are different.

I'm also really tired of the stupid automatic short-range attack they make you do when you try to shoot while you're close to an enemy target. It locks you into its animation long enough to get you hit by something that you could have dodged if you had shot your gun as you probably intended to do.

I guess I'd better write Konami so that they can put out a patch.
