Joe has shit taste in games, he only praises shitty early Sega Genesis games he played as a kid like all these horribly outdated racing games because he has nostalgia for them.
He also acts as if he's all "mature nintendo is for kiddis" and his favorite game of all time is Castle of Illusion (great game, don't get me wrong, but you can't say that is your fav game when you pose as a guy who dislikes kiddy games).
You can tell he's also always nervous in front of the camera, has very poor social skills and is actually BAD at video games (see Playing with Sacks where Dave always wins without even trying and Joe tries too hard but still loses, even with his beloved Saturn control pad).

Dave may not be the best e-celeb or the best retro reviewer, but you can tell the guy had a normal life, is socially apt, did sports all his youth and has a family.

I used to watch (and ocasionally rewatch) AVGN a lot, but it worn off after some time, since he takes so long to release a single episode.

Now, I'm not the kind that normally enjoys playthroughs, that's why I liked AVGN but discarded everything else (it was more of a review than a let's play), most of let's players are pretentious, egocentrical and (mainly) loud as fuck, HOWEVER I do am enjoying GCCX, the production values are way higher, the show has many interesting segments other than just playing a game, and it's more about 1 hour of highlights from a footage of over 12+ hours than literally showing every second of it, the editing is pretty good.
Arino and the entire cast is pretty charismatic once you get to know each of them, no e-celeb drama bullshit, no kids swearing because it sounds cool, no "like/subscribe/comment/suckmydick", just a dude against challenging/interesting games.

You know, I think James' taste in games is shit. His video game sensibilities disgust me sometimes. And when I see his horror movie affection in its full scale, I do start getting ideas that he's an autist.

But, with all of this said—AVGN will always be special for me. It touches upon the big part of vidya that not many people can talk interestingly about—just how frustrating, annoying or plain bad some old games really were, when they were sold for full price. And really, he just has the necessary brains to discuss it. He doesn't just fling shit at games like your average internet shitposter. He keeps it to the point, and really delves into the REASONS why the games suck. I especially liked how in Darkwing Duck episode, he showed the players just how big of an input delay the games have.

So, it's the #1 reason for me—that he UNDERSTANDS games, not just fishes for easy views and memes. And also, heck, he can be pretty entertaining too. I mean, the lowbrow "B-movie" parts are silly as fuck—but he knows it, despite they are actually pretty complex in execution and writing. He also never takes himself too seriously, and is still pretty down-to-earth (despite he already has a family).

So while I can't say I'm the biggest fan, I enjoy his videos sometimes. They can be better or worse, but still I appreciate the best parts more than I dislike him for the worst ones.

It has all the episodes until season 15 (with exception of one or two, I think), one thing to remember is that you don't need to download everything, just select a few seasons per time (like pic related) in your torrent.

Watching random episodes is not as good since mentions/references to previous episodes is something pretty constant, also, is nice to see how the Kacho and the show changes with the time.

Don't forget that James is a huge film nerd. More then a videogame nerd. He might aswell been playing in on that very specific trope. Just like most of his work references other movies, and their tropes.

The Angry Video Game Nerd movie was first and foremost a movie project. It was written with the focus on it's story, way more then your average AVGN episode was.

The only small complaint I had with it was the fact that it felt so different then his regular AVGN stuff. But honestly, a 80 minute movie that's just him sitting on a couch and talking shit about old video games with the occasional guest popping in for a fight wouldn't really work anyway. So in that regard he did well.

Sure it has it's problems, and it's not a perfect movie in any means. But the dude lived up to his dream. He had a succesful series, and finally directed a full-fledged near studio quality feature length film based on what originally started as a side project.

I jumped around to a few parts of this video. He's not bad, but I wouldn't say he's great. He doesn't seem to know some fairly basic things for a smooth run through Contra 3 on Hard. I have a few examples.

On the Stage 3 boss, the fire breath is too fast to outrun. You need to start near the top center and drop down so that you're actually chasing the fire for a moment. You don't have time to take any shots while the fire breath is going. You have to keep moving.

On the Stage 4 boss, it seems to take him forever to remember that you can drop down manually from missile to missile. He should've taken out the bottom gun much more quickly.

On the Stage 5 boss, I'm pretty sure that you can double tap the shoulder button to nullify the fast spinning. He doesn't seem to know about that.

His technique near the end is pretty good, but I don't think he'd be able to do a deathless run any time soon.

One e-celeb that I really like to watch is Shesez. The dude has a series in which he basically breaks the camera and moves it independently from the actual characters. This way you can see how some levels look like outside of the characters point of view, and thus the shortcuts most developers made to finish a game in time. It's really interesting and slightly comfy.

A recent video from another youtuber with similar stats with subs and views as CGR showed their youtube income. They were making 40k USD a year off youtube ads only.
