I agree with this. The stories in sandbox/world exploration games are just so bad, and this applies to both old games, like Might & Magic, and new games like Skyrim. Only one I can remember giving a fuck about is Fallout New Vegas, though it's not retro, and possibly because I've always hated Chandler and wanted him to die.

ultimas 4-7pt1 all have decent to great stories with many 'sandbox' qualities... perfected, imo, with 6 & 7.

The first two fallouts manage to do this pretty well too. the story may not be great, but what it lacks in story it makes up for in atmosphere

I always thought the elder scrolls erred way too much to the sandbox territory, which seems a common opinion round these parts.
