How do I master magic in unlimited ? Should i grind mimics for tablets ?

There are three ways to get magic tablets in Unlimited.

One way is farming Mimic Slimes with Detect Gold for extra drop rates, that yields any magic tablet except forbidden ones, I personally like to quicken the process even further by using Magic Lock on the first turn to shut them down and then wail on them with Fire Arrow or spears.

Another way is doing adventures with set chests or magic tablets like Leith Torles' Tower, Twin Moon Temple or Fugar's Mansion, again, you get any tablet except forbidden ones, though the more fight you've got on your adventure history the higher the chance of high level tablet yields, which is another reason why you'd like to do Fugar's Mansion ASAP as there's no monsters to fight there.

The third way is fighting special event monsters with Tablet drops, that is Mural monsters in the Mural Caves questline, event Crystal Shard monsters on the Deity's Table, Event Comet monsters on the Starship Anchor and so on, Detect Gold is your friend here too.

If you want to get Forbidden tablets you can get those from Rainbow Guckies, which randomly spawn on New Game+ files, Rainbow Guckies are the toughest normal monster you'll fight in the field by far so don't just jump on them if you happen to find one early on, wait until you are able to fight tough monsters without problems, Forbidden Tablets have particularly strong spells that lead to the strongest possible spells through Magic Blender, so you won't get them without sweating a bit.

If you mean mastering magic as to learning spells quickly, you should simply get on a field with the appropriate elemental reel as landing on the appropriate elemental panel gives you more learning points, if you're trying to learn Wood spells do adventures that take place in a forest, that way the reel will innately have more Wood Panels, if you're learning Fire spells volcanoes or the Escata Palace.
Keep in mind you can also influence reel panels with spells like Rainbringer or Overgrowth.

>> No.3647729

>>3647135
Late addition just to be perfectly clear about maximizing magic potential:

Your elemental value is more important than your magic value, by far, so concentrate on raising elemental value first and magic value second, L5 Fortuneteller panels are the absolute best in raising elemental value so use those on the right panel of the element you want to raise the most, Phobia panels are a close second but they're Phobia panels so only use them if you know what you're doing or if you want a small additional challenge, they're not as bad as you might think but require more thought. Mastered magic Tablets as in Tablets that have been completely learned, give additional Elemental bonuses related to the Element they're based on, smart Panel formations in forms of lines or Triangles lead to even better Elemental bonuses.

A dedicated mage character can only be used to its fullest by having a Magic Blender panel so you can access the better spells through fusion, the best offensive spells are mostly Fire spells, so a character with a Fire score of 4 is already a good candidate for becoming an offensive mage, support spells don't become more effective with higher Elemental scores.

Mages benefit immensely from equipment with Elemental Support slots, so forge and slap as many pieces of equipment with your preferred Elemental Support on your mages.

If you want to cast Forbidden spells you'll need to forge s piece of equipment from Demonite that has a Forbidden Arts slot, Demonite only appears at higher market ranks in the stores, you can't cast Forbidden spells in any other way as there's no Forbidden Familiar.

If you have any other question,

As I thought, Maximius, Urpina's dad is playable, which means we can have the whole Uranius family do a party, except Uranius mom.

The big girl is Irene, pronounced in the italian way I guess so /i'rene/, she's part or the Eraklius family, but I'll explain more of that later.

Forgot to say that the brown girl in the first scan is called Tischsack, or so I think, it's a weird name, the granny is the Great Witch/Daimajou(大魔女), seems this game is fond of addressing characters by titles rather than names.

Too bad her name is Elaine.

>> No.3649940

Well then:

Tieschsak's(how the fuck do you even spell this) story:
In the north, at end of the world lives a very peculiar hunter. Her skin is brown due to the glowing snow(look up 雪焼け, it's a funny thing), her small, slit eyes suggest she has ties to the bloodlines of the western nomads but it is unknown why she lives in such a forlorn part of the world. Her name seems to mean "Thousand" and ironically her existence is like a thousand enigmas.

The Great Witch's story:
the "Great Witch" is a particular witch, standing above all the other witches in terms of power and charisma. All the other witches rever her and are guided by her, simply addressing to her as the Great Witch. Her true name has not yet been revealed.
If I got that right by looking at the small screenshot with Taria, it seems that Taria herself was also a witch at some point in her past, but she quit the job to do some FUCKING POTTERY.

Maximius: one of the four generals of the empire, the Sword General and head of the Uranius Family, he's the father of Urpina and Antonius, their mother was Claudia, the Shield General of Erakleos family, she died ten years prior to the events of the game, since then the children have been entrusted to female caretakers.

Irene is the head of the Eraklios/Erakleos family of Shield Generals, she's also the mother of the second son of House Erakleos. As per tradition of the family members being the shields of the Emperor, the Erakleos Family has mixed their bloodline with that of the Norm tribe, obtaining amazing physiques and incredible fitness. Irene isn't an exception with her robust body, blond hair and blue eyes.

Marion: Not much here, she's part of Kohan's castle crew together with Arthur and Patricia, she joins in the beginning of the game during Balmaint's quest, if you're playing as Taria you can recruit her later if you save her from being captured, no words about Urpina or Leonard's quests.

>> No.3649953

Luna: A secretary from the Imperial Library, just like Francis, she can be seen together with him as a foe in the second trailer fighting against Urpina. She attends an imperial festival of sorts where contenders have to go through various trials such as holding breath

Youman: Former captain of a smuggler's ship. He helps Urpina in travelling through the empire as a stoveaway. "I smuggle for a living, so I'm not a suspicious kind of guy" he says.

Kumi: A pirate(really?) from the Bikiniro province, everyone fears crossing the sea there, thinking a certain ship might appear. "If you betray me, I'll hang you high from the ship's mast!" as you can infer from her behaviour, she's quite the bully.

World lore:
About the heads of the Four Families, they served the former emperor as their trusted generals. The Sword Generals of the Uranius family, The Shield Generals of the Erakleos, the Magicians of the Gwieneuse family and the Bow Generals of the Yanyouji family. Even after the fall of the empire, the four houses continue to rule over four parts of the empire. It is said that by nature, the houses of Uranius and Erakleos are incompatible and can only hardly cooperate with each other, Maximius has plans to restore the Empire to its former glory and reinstate and emperor, as such he decides to march on the devastated city of Aswakan in hope of realizing his dream.

The creatures we'll see in this games are particular spirits that inhabit this world together with other beings, although they're not as powerful as the Star Gods(This world's creators) they still have powers beyond human ken. These spirits will sometime show themselves to the main characters as a threat throughout their adventures. These spirits also appeared during the war against Firebringer, a time when earthquakes were also frequent. Not much is know about the extent of their power.

The Phoenix is the spirit of Fire.
The Earth Snake is the spirit of Earth.
The Black Worm is the spirit of Water.

>> No.3649962

Now, you can go around the world and engage in all sorts of trades, crafting and even influence a place's culture by trading certain materials. At the beginning of the game for instance you'll be given straw, you can use straw in another place to see what kind of products you might get or create with it.
Furthermore, all lands will have their own variety of native special products, which you can buy and use to create new items, which I suppose you can use in forging or general commerce, together with Crystals.

Regarding the world, each part of it will have different customs, climates, agricultural tradition and cultures in general which in turn will change the goods you'll get, moreover, you'll be able to change the world according to the decisions you'll take throughout your adventure. Thinking "How will the world change if I choose this option" will make your adventures even more exciting.

Everything is pretty interesting so far, but this one struck me as being the coolest aspect they've discussed in this article.

Scarlet Grace is shaping up to be one hell of a game and I'm looking forward to it while hoping for an English release

Say, Kyodai, they're offering a 1.5 year course near where I live that teaches Japanese with a Japanese instructor. Worth it? y/n

>> No.3650038

>>3649997
I wish I could do better honestly, but it's not like I have all that time for studying japanese, and progress in such a language isn't so fast for a westerner.
Still better than nothing I guess, especially considering that no western news site is covering Scarlet, sadly enough.

I agree that the new commerce gimmick seems interesting, since there's also a Forge Rank this time I guess the game's will be focused on knowing which province gives you certain materials and how trading between provinces might change the goods in the shops, Elemental Crystals being a currency you get from battles supposedly also tie in to Battle Rank so grinding for currency should be discouraged enough so you have to make do with what you get.

Kawazu also mentioned that there are events on the maps such as changing the size of sheep flocks, I guess those might also affect trading in a certain way, as in making the flock bigger would make wool appear more often or deflate the prices, I don't know, then there's this whole thing about agriculture, it does look cool and somewhat Dwarf Fortressy in a way.

Regarding the japanese course, I'd say go for it brother, you have to begin somewhere after all, 1.5 year seems also a great offer, the best I could get in here was a 60 hours course, so go for it, the earlier you begin studying the faster you'll learn, you'll also be free from the burden of terrible localizations/translations, which is no small advantage for people like us.

>> No.3651498

>>3651491
Katakana is not a language. It's a set of written characters that correspond specifically to a set of sounds. There are inherently no word associations or meanings to the syllables of katakana, the characters literally just describe the sound that is made/heard, ipso facto there are no words and you can't call it a language. You could definitely say that it's used to communicate language, but that's the difference between medium and data.

It seems there's a good bit of PGC content outside of battles in the forms of events like the mandragoras or the hot springs, that said I know I would.
Actually, an entirely PG game with SaGa mechanics and aesthetic wold be pretty balling, we must bail Kawazu out of Squenix somehow so he can go balls deep, maybe hook him up with Tarn Adams so they can produce purely crystallized RPG autism together so that we have a game that might last millennia.
>>3650474
I'm not fond of that really questionable localization and pirating shit, but at this point I'd say just pirate it, I'm not even sure the bigwigs greenlighted the thing, or maybe it's stuck in some kind of localization/licensing limbo, who knows.
Better than waiting for Gideon, that's for sure.

To be honest I tend to lean with the people against the localization, but most of the hassle in the threads was due to the usual people wanting to spam memes and shitposting to the point things were no longer fun, a common problem on 4chan.

Yeah, that's my issue.

It's not about coming together as fans and pointing out errors, helping one another out, and banding together as a community.

It's just "fuck that, famalambruhthang, let's spam dank memes 420zzzzz"

>> No.3651593

>>3651581
Well 4chan is mostly like that, can't say I like that, especially here on /vr/ which started out real nice and got bad relatively fast.
You can find some good thread once in a while, but that's true for most boards, the problem is the frequency of good threads is inversely proportional to the quantity of shitposting on the board itself.

I shitpost too at times, and there's also those days when I'm tired or irritated by IRL things like everybody else and I shouldn't really post, but at least I'm not aggressively posting the same old tired memes all day in all threads for months.
/OfftopicRant

Now that I think about it, we'll have to find some other place to talk about Scarlet, can't do it here, that's for sure, maybe I'll make some threads on /v/, as much as I loathe the place.

I find that as long as we're sticking to the general rules of the general itself (we're here to talk about old saga games, but there's still a new one that we can discuss) it should be fine.

On the other hand there's always time for the birth of a SaGa IRC chat room, or my very own eternitychan that no one ever wants to use.

>> No.3651627

>>3651610
Yeah, I probably should create a IRC channel just in case, I don't know if people can get used to Eternitychan's old layout and lack of utilities, considering a good part of /vr/ is made up of oldfags I don't think they'd mind too much, but we'll see on the coming weeks and decide what to do.

Truth to be told, I was considering starting an actual Wiki for the series, not that pile of flaming garbage that is the SaGa.Wikia, something more professional and actually reliable, that'll take a lot of time, I'd also like it to keep it away from the grubby hands of that Farel guy so he can't self promote and butt in everything SaGa related, he's seriously Chris-chan levels of annoying.

At this point, I'd kill for a decently detailed Kawazu wiki.

Cause you can't really find any information something like Wild Card unless you're willing to dig through places like /vr/

>> No.3651654

>>3651642
Wild Card is a super niche title even in Japan, so it's not surprising.
I've tried playing through it a couple of times and while it's mindblowing to even think about such a system it's also true that it's not a game for everyone, it's really abstract Kawazuism compared to some of his soft games like the first Crystal Chronicles which are easily accessible.

If we'd ever do something like a Kawazu Wiki we'd need some japanese insider, a lot of interviews or streams are JP only stuff and god knows how much we missed or got lost to time, considering the huge amount of respect the man has I guess someone would be willing to help create at least a bilingual wiki or something, that'd be cool as shit.

It comes with the territory of being part of a series that was mostly if not entirely Japanese only. If it doesn't match up 1 to 1 with the accepted customs by that side of the fanbase then its terrible.

Granted, they really should take the time and effort for things to make sure that they don't change the meanings too much or to ensure that it doesn't sound wooden/stiff.

Look man, it is phonetically correct as Irene, in the greek/Italian pronunciation, considering her surname is Erakleos it makes even more sense, Elena is エレナ, イレーネ is Irene, especially because of the vowel doubling on the レ, which means the accent falls on the second sillable giving it's greek pronunciation.
If you want wrong romanized name look at Balmaint or Taria, which should be Valmante/Balmante and Talia, I can't deny that there are wrongly romanized names, but Irene ain't one of them, it doesn't even have an official romanization anyway.
>>3653157
If we don't get something for the 20th anniversary in 2017, I don't see Frontier getting a remake, at least not anytime soon considering we're getting a new mainline game now.
They're also surprisingly working hard on Imperial, I logged in the other day after months and boy did they add shit while I wasn't looking, they reworked and added a lot of stuff and now they give you tons of money and special tickets for the Gatcha, I even got one ticket that gives me a 5* of my choice, though there's too many characters I want, Alkaiser, Metal Black, Emerald, Wil...
They've also made an adut version of Ginny as one of the Free Fighters from RomaSaGa 2 for a Noel event, Emilia got her Bunny suit version, Barbara and Jamil got their Minstrel Song versions and so on.
I'd say that now it's not half bad for a browser game, there's really a lot of interesting things to do and see, they've reworked the game system a lot and added very much needed rebalancing in the form of new mechanics like equipment, crystals and other things like better smithing options, better gatcha and better rewards and campaigns, the game flows much better now.

More annoying than hilarious since they're both locked equipment that nerf Gustaf to oblivion just when he could shine as a character, instead even Roberto is potentially a better character than him, and Roberto kinda sucks unless you use him as a pseudo Narcisse or you grind and give him a Seven Star Sword, which can't even be used in the localized game.

I know, SaGa doesn't have a team all for itself like FF, even the Frontier games were made by teams that were largely composed by Seiken Densetsu key staff and other people.
Which wouldn't be bad if Square's management didn't suck and took away people and budget from those teams all the time during development.

Really sucks to trade a waza for a shitty counter that only does about 40 damage. Just fought a dragon ruler with her and Ellen and it was just a nightmare. Every single turn of hers got cancelled and Ellen missed every single attack. Jesus

The Ice Sword is the second best Greatsword in the game and unlike the best one you can get it easily, the catch is that you have to be fast enough to use it well or put it on someone in the back rows so they get attacked less often.
There's a few ways to get around its Ice Barrier effect cancelling your attacks.

1)Quicktime
2)Debuffing the enemy with SuperGravity and buffing your Ice Sword user with Hard Fire/Moon Glow for maximized speed advantage
3)Use light equipment on light characters. This requires you to rely on mikiri and/or magic like Dancing Leaves for stronger enemies though as you won't have good defense against certain attacks and would probably die in one hit.

If you feel like it's too much of a pain to bother and you want a good GS user you can grind the Ahli enemies(women with greatswords and winged caps) in the small chamber on the right of the last floor of Leonid's castle, they drop the best greatsword in the game.

Dragon Rulers are pretty fast and have direct multi attacks like claws and tail swipes that make it hard to use the Ice Sword on them, unless you have a Mikiri set, most other enemies don't have such an advantage, consider that the Ice Sword also bypasses Aunas' innate Self Burning, just like in the first RomaSaGa, Aunas also doesn't use direct attacks often, I don't think his true form has any even, the Ice Sword will destroy him effortlessly.
Iirc, the Ice Sword's Ice Barrier also stops multi attack chains like claws attacks if it activates during a chain, but I'm not sure if I remember correctly, I should test it.

I personally don't like to use the Ice Sword on Katarina, she's fast but she's too frail to use it efficiently imo, and for the reasons >>3656595 mentioned she tends to get targeted more often than not, especially in the last battle, even if you buff her with Hard Fire she's not always going to attack first, at that point you might want to have a dedicated quicktime spammer, though you must give up one potential healer by doing so.

I tend to give it to either Ward or Zo, they're both so slow and heavy they make fantastic tanks, the Ice Sword just makes them heavy hitters on top, especially during the mid game they can become very powerful thanks to that.
But it's up to you anyway, Hard Fire should already solve most of your problems.

Maybe if someone who was actually funny did that amount of work it would be cool. Maybe if someone with real critical opinions made a real video about the game instead of a vicarious jack off video about them playing it, that would be cool.

Now that I think about it that ring is the only thing besides Phantom Fighter that can make you avoid Astral Gate, I wonder if it can target invisible party members or characters in Wraith Form, never tried that.

Alright.
This is the last stretch.
I've rapidly read parts of it and this is just some trivia by two Famitsu writers playing the game and explaining the features of the game, seems there's hardly anything new or interesting to talk about so I won't be translating eight pages of Famitsu, it's a huge amount of work and I don't have the time or skill to do so either.

One thing that caught my eye in the last part is that one of the writers comments on the game feeling like a weird mix of Makai Toshi/Romancing/Frontier/Unlimited with some new SaGa feel to it. It reminded me of a tweet by one japanese guy to Kawazu saying that to him FF and DQ are the curry of RPGs and SaGa was Blue Cheese.

It is a positive review made by people who seem to know their shit though, there's some parts when the writer reflects on the "feeling" of a SaGa game and how this game feels and also doesn't feel like a SaGa game, when I have some time I'd like to translate it with care because it's the only interesting part of the article, the rest is kind of boring comedic chitchat and a summary of mechanics that have been explained better on the previous articles.
Guess we'll have the scores on the next issue for those who are interested.

Unlimited's problem is that once you go beyond its strange mechanics and design and understand what makes your character strong it's pretty damn breakable, unlike other games it's pretty easy to become nigh unstoppable just by having a good panel setup and abusing shops.
Scarlet seems to go back to the Romancing design of battles where you have to take your time and make a good setup instead of spamming combos, the fact that now spells need turns to cast also changes the pace considerably since you'll have to manage your healing more carefully.

What surprises me most though is that Kawazu got back on Frontier 2 Roles just now, even the DS SaGa 3 remake picked up and reworked SNES RomaSaGa's weapon and waza design. I personally though Roles were one of the best parts of Frontier 2's original design together with chips and crowns acting as separate currencies, magic channeling and the whole distinction between tools and Quells.

>Steel items are still very strong and easy to get, at that point I'd rather not keep playing on New Game+ altogether so I can't abuse high market ranks.
In Unlimited it's to the point that I wonder if SaGa games should even have item drops and stuff. If you had to find all your gear, could only get a fixed amount of treasure, bought and sold items for the same value, and had to set up a team with the set amount of resources that are within reach in the game, that would be some really fucking solid shit.

>> No.3669468

>>3667886
I'm not against item drops, SaGa already did away with the whole concept of potions or antidotes a long time ago, removing enemy drops might be too far, considering you also fight humanoids who wear equipment it would be a bit strange to not get item drops altogether.
Besides, Unlimited's system isn't actually too unbalanced unless you rely on new game+ carryovers, and even so you can feasibly live off what you get from the land by focusing on treasure chests without buying or forging, there's many treasure chests that yield fixed items, you can get a Dragonscale knife while doing the last part of Regal Lion's questline unless you're playing as Laura, you can forge the silver key and copper keys you get while doing the haunted mansion quest into weapons without having to spend a single piece of gold in materials and wound up with a Platinum sword early on, Michelle or Armic also come with Silver Swords and Guns are a thing, there's many, many ways to get stronger while minimizing some aspect of the game, it all depends on how you want to play.

If I don't want to hoard chests I can simply forge compulsively what I get in the shops and keep buying raw materials with Maharaja and selling forged goods to force the Market Rank up and get better items, viceversa, if I don't want to wast time on shopping I can focus on chests, I'll probably get better growth and panels more often too while I'm at it.

Removing one of those aspects makes the game more limited in a way, and I don't personally like that, SaGa is great because you can change your approach to the game in many different ways so that you're not tied to one particular mechanic or aspect of the game but are also forced to learn how to get what you need in another way, it is inevitable that something turns out to be more convenient than something else, but it's also nice to learn not to depend on certain things.

You can also make everyone a martial artist so you don't need weapons at all.

RomaSaGa 3 might be more polished and does look a lot better, but for some things it just can't beat RomaSaGa 2 for me, the story isn't as good, it's less open, with less quest variations and the party formation in 2 requires more thought in general due to the system being more strict and the game more difficult.

Okay now.

I've played for two hours or so.
This game is good, it's real good.

The BP system is a great idea so that even if you get strong waza you can't spam them at all since they're very costly and works in tandem with Rengeki.
Rengeki works more or less like a half press turn from Nocturne, except you can stack them to reduce BP cost.
The Timeline system is more important than I've thought as the enemy aggressively tries to alter the timeline and get better positions so you can't use rengeki at all and they maximize their chances to use it both actively and passively, it's more or less like a second formation mechanic.
Here comed the new Bump and Interrupt waza system, Bump waza bump an enemy to a further tile in the timeline, that not only means their attacks come later but you can make another ally act one turn faster, Interrupt waza position your character at the beginning of the timeline to counter the first enemy that gets to attack, one nice thing is that some waza like Matador also have Bump properties, so you can have a Bump+Interrupt waza, Matador saved my ass quite a lot as it seems to always push an enemy quite far in the timeline.
The enemies are strong and don't fuck around, skill ups are more or less as frequent as RomaSaGa 2, which is good, HP grows pretty slowly too.
I still don't understand the Flux system all that well, so I won't comment on that, only wand users can use magic though.
The battles also work on a reward system based on subachievements, if you fulfill specific conditions such as inflicting a status, avoiding a counter or avoiding a KO you get extra items such as elemental crystals or various forging materials, other item drops also occur independently from this system, you can also see which reward you're going to get before each battle, which is nice.
Characters out of battle slowly regen their LP, more or less 1 point each three battles, much like Frontier.

I have to say, now I kind of understand what they meant by the game feeling like a mix of Frontier, Romancing and Unlimited, there's a lot of events that are seemingly inconsequential on the map, some occur randomly while other seem scripted.
The designs are very Romancing like but a lot of things like many waza or the LP regen mechanics come straight from Frontier.
Forging works kind of like TLR, you even get forging tree branches for all weapons, which is interesting, needless to say you need a shitload of stuff so you can't get strong too fast.
The animations are kind of reminiscent of Tokusatsu, but maybe it's just me.
You can indeed remove the MC from the party, no forced MCs like the Romancing games.

One other curious thing, this game seems to be very fond of Italy and its culture, a lot of terms are in Italian and there's even some real life cities in here, funnily enough.

Reception seems great, the feedback on PSN is 75 votes for a 4.88/5, let's hope this game does well.

Aye, that it is.
And I already got myself locked in an unwinnable fight in Urpina's story.
So Leonard is next.
Just found out you can also refuse your chosen character and choose one of the other MCs, but you'll lose the stat modifiers from the questions.
Leonard is pretty damn fun just as I hoped, Elizabeth is great too, they have great chemistry, they call each other as Leo and Liza.
One other little thing I noticed, it seems each weapon has its different waza trees, so forging is serious business this time.
Many playable characters also fall in the generic line, Yamato has exactly the same model as some high rank soldiers while I noticed that Queen in Taria's story shares the same model with one of Urpina's nannies .
The boss music is fucking nuts too.

Back when I was like 11, some shop was selling old Gameboy titles and I ended up having my aunt buy all three of the ffl games in exchange for doing some chores for her. Not even a month later I found a brand new copy of SaGa Frontier selling at Electric Boutique for 4.99 usd

Worth as fuck, they were tough games for me at the time and gave a lot of replay value in long car trips

Later I got into SF2 (didn't like it nearly as much even though it was a pretty game), I rented SaGa Unlimited and didn't like it at time of rental (wish I had another chance to give it a shot..), and I later emulated RS3

That actually depended on where you lived, in Japan it was 6800Y new if I'm not mistaken, which wasn't cheap, it was a pretty normal high price.
They did try to ride the X-2 hype more in the west I guess.
In hindsight, that wasn't really a good strategy to promote and sell your own game though, ZOE did the same with Metal Gear and it kinda bombed, how many games that got demos with other games actually sold well back in the days?

Use magic Afendi, you hear?
Don't neglect your magic users or you're going to eat shit very, very fast.

Small Scarlet Grace parenthesys, I've been putting off magic for most of the game since I still don't completely understand how Flux works, seems pretty doable to do a no magic run in this game, I've got to Firebringer already but he's insane and I skipped parts of the story anyway, so I'll go back to him later, his themes rock hard and the battle is something really, really surprising mechanic wise, I'd never imagined something like this not even in my wildest dreams.
Magic is pretty strong here though, Thunderbringer is obscenely strong, strongest single/Multi target spell I've found so far, Crimson Nova is not as good as the other games but it's real cheap, Tower is weird, it's hard to use it properly, I guess it can shine at maxed rank though.
There's a few new spells too, Holy Grail is the only spell that can restore KO'd characters, and you can only use that as opposed to the older way of simply using any healing item or spells, one other spell lowers casting time, I wonder if there's something like Overdrive.

However, before I pay the $17.99 the iOS App Store is asking for, I need to know: can one play the game in Japanese by changing the iOS system language (like many of Square/Enix's mobile releases) or is one stuck with the English version only (a la Final Fantasy Tactics)?

Nobody has uploaded the OST so far, they will distribute it on the 21st so only those who bought the Midareretsugekka box have it so far.
There's three kinds of normal boss musics, "low level" or early bosses such as the Earth Snake and some minor ones, normal boss and high level boss for stuff like the Dragons, Dragon Rulers and some other hidden bosses like the mechs in Rhonicum, then there's the boss music for taking tests in the gods' shrines, which I guess it's something only Urpina can do as Leonard does not have access to that, the three great beasts' own boss music, first phase Firebringer and second Phase Firebringer, I also found Vach, which is actually called Macha in the official romanization and she has her own battle theme too I guess, unless all the other gods share it, I still have to find Marigan and the others, if you can even fight all of them since gods like Uzume are supposed to be gods of peace.

You can listen to some of the battle themes in the official websites, there's a small window on the far upper left.

Leonard's BT-翔遼乱承!
Urpina's BT-:花びらを踏みしめて
Taria's BT-血の滾り
Balmaint's BT-罪を背負う者
Three great beasts BT-大いなる存在
Gods' trials BT-星神・守護者たち

The first phase BT of Firebringer is the one used in:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4uRGEJsb9Y
Though this version is cut and edited, the actual battle theme is different and has more parts, this kinda skips from the intro to the climax.
I've took a rapid look on youtube and found a few themes.
You can hear the normal boss battle theme in the beginning of this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFuYohUXMuA
This video has Macha's Battle theme and her fight, skip to 14:43.

>> No.3691001

>is the secret to playing Last Remnant just not picking all the highest costing shit every turn
Well, yeah.
If you pick the highest costing shit chances are that you completely blow your pacing and select something you don't need at the moment, and depending on how you build a union chances are that low costing commands might be just what you need most of the times.
It's mostly better to plan for the long run instead of trying to blitz, with some exception of course. Some battles also get much easier once you know if there's some reinforcements and how reinforcements behave, The Enlightened Seven work very much like that, if you don't know how to prepare for the next one showing up then you'll have a rough battle, like casting Orphic Ward before Ludolpe comes up to nuke you with Galaxy helps quite a bit for instance.

TLR also works around morale a lot, so it's better to build your morale and then, if the time is right use your high cost commands to ride the momentum.

>How do you think it fares compared to other games of the series?
After 50+ hours I poured into the game, it's perhaps the most balanced game in the series in terms of difficulty, the game is consistently difficult thanks to the BP system making it impossible to spam waza like you would in the other games, even at rank 3 the strongest waza are still too costly to use consistently, no matter the formation, you need to trigger a Rengeki to make them viable and some battles are designed against Rengeki to begin with, keeping the challenge fresh and consistent.

Quest wise, it's absurd. I am STILL getting new events on Leonard's quest after 40 hours and I'm pretty sure I missed quite a few of them and only took one path for others, I accidentally avoided Mt. Plinio's eruption by awakening the geysers for instance, I've seen about 100 events on Leo's quest alone.
>Any other elements taken straight from other SaGa/Kawazu games?
The game's mostly completely original besides having many monsters from Minstrel Song, which work quite differently however and have better models on top of that. I am currently writing a in depth review of the game and all of its features which I'm going to post on Eternitychan since /v/ is too fast and /vr/ isn't the right place for it, so if you want some more articulated impression on the game as a whole wait until I post the link, I should be done in a few days.
>How are the loading times in general?
There is some wait when you start the game from the title screen, and sometimes you'll get multiple battles which all go through an intermission screen in which you can change your party members, their equipment role etc. which is actually crucial, the loading time for battles is 5-7 seconds long at best, nothing too offensive. The game does experience some framedrops for certain waza though, Aiming, Three Dragons, Southern Cross and a few others have noticeable frame drops, nothing that can't be fixed by some patch I suppose.

>Is there any chance of DLC or additional storylines/events/etc being added later on?

Well, the DLC section in the main menu might point out to something like that, though I guess it was mainly done for the preorder DLCs, Kawazu isn't actually too fond of DLC either, none of his games had any, but we'll see, I wouldn't mind getting some additional content either, though it's not like the game is lacking it.
As I've seen on 2ch there's only two gods out of 12 you can fight since people have cracked the trophy list, I get that gods like Uzume or Bartlett aren't really meant to be fighters storywise but Adamas, Diemazu and Shams surely can, Diemazu and Shams especially since they have offensive blessings like Marigan.
>I feel like it could really work within the context of SaGa getting expansions in the style of older PC games.
I don't know if someone's gonna get angry at this, but SaGa should have been on PC in the first place, Kawazu and his teams are good at working around console's limitations, you can say it's the most surprising aspect of his portfolio considering how much he manages to cram into his games in terms of mechanics, but SaGa on PC would be a whole other story, and I don't mean graphics, I mean buttload of contents and updates, SaGa games already feel like PC games for most things, that way he would also be able to get around Squenix not giving him enough time and money to develop what he wants so he can put it in further updates or expansions with ease and listen to players' feedback.

There aren't really specific mechanics lifted up from tabletop games really, it's mostly rolls for many different mechanics generally speaking, like having the chance of learning a new technique in the middle of a fight due to spark rolls.
Unlimited is the game that plays more like an actual RPG campaign in many ways due to the map and dungeon design, the possibility of using spells in a practical ways, like using a water spell to cool magma so you could walk on it or use it to open a chest locked with magic, and of course the Reels. The series is also focused on mechanics like racial damage, individual stat growth or different mechanics altogether for a specific race, see mechs or espers growing differently from humans, monsters assuming different forms depending on the monster meat they eat and so on, generally speaking, many games actually feel like there's a Master directing the flow and Unlimited's use of Reels is like a dice roll more or less, the general freedom of exploration and non linearity does help in reinforcing the illusion.
Problem is all the games are pretty different from each other, with the exception of the first three GB games, which all share more or less a similar design, and even then SaGa 3 was still different, not in a good way though.
If you're a fa/tg/uy you'll want to play Unlimited as it's the most tabletop game of the bunch so far, Scarlet is close too but it reverted to a more traditional videogame RPG design for most things so I don't think you'll enjoy it.
I don't know much about wargames so I can't comment on that.

Unfortunately, yes. You can still try and make a Phobia line if you feel like it, that restricts her usefulness even further but she might be a good offensive fire mage in the last battle, and she can buff or heal for all the rest, but it's up to you, I built Ruby like that in one of my runs as a challenge.

It's the same problem with Kurt and Michelle with their Gauntlet panels, at least Michelle does take that panel off in Mythe's story, both she and Kurt have to keep those shitty panels at level one in other stories though, so they're way worse than Tiffon since at least she can make a combo with other phobia panels and they're not Lv1 panels on top of that.

Dude
You have no idea how incredible the battle against full power Firebringer is, it's a nightmare.
I'm tempted to spoiler you but it's so fucking amazing you should experience it spoiler free because of all the literal bullshit he pulls out of his ass.
You think Saruin's Animate Dead, Pillars and Deus ex Machina is tough? Firebringer has triple the amount of bullshit so that if you happen to do ONE wrong action, not even in his final phase he can wipe you out effortlessly, AND you still have to get to the final phase, which is even more bullshit than that.

And I'll tell you what, even at normal power he can still wipe you out easily, I was at 600 HP on most characters with good armor, some with top tier weapons and he still fucked me up.

>Everything I've seen paints Scarlet Grace as being one of the most difficult SaGa games ever.
Scarlet is pretty difficult overall, most of the boss fights, especially the unique bosses like Macha are very tough, the only easy special boss I've fought was Marigan but I fought him very late on so I had statistical superiority , and they really should have given his summons more HP.
I too was following one japanese player and when he got to Firebringer and saw all the bullshit he was pulling he said "何だよこのマソゲ!", many people had to reset Macha's battle multiple times because if you get the tactics and pacing wrong you might as well just reset or watch her nuke you slowly with Crimson Flare breaking your max HP threshold.
It's a tactics heavy game based on planning, the BR here boosts the enemy stats a lot so that the only way to keep up is forging better equipment, but forging requires ingredients locked behind battle conditions, so if you don't fight battles with those extra handicaps you won't get upgrades and the enemies keep getting stronger faster than you do...Its great, it has some problems but it's great.

Pic related is an average text bubble from the game, if you can or are willing to stop and look for kanji in order to read this you're fine for most of the game, I don't know how heavy the text gets for stories like Balmaint's or Taria's though, it becomes a bit hard when people are talking about politics and stuff, especially in Urpina's story but even so I guess you can just take a screenshot and use one of those text recognition tools on the picture to get more or less a vague translation.
I should try making a screenshot of a text heavy bubble and see for myself how it goes actually.

You asked the wrong question.
>How costly is a 4 mecha party for SaGa2 DS, anons?
The answer is very costly, mechs are possibly the strongest race but depend entirely on their equipment, it's possible to cruise most of the game if you grind for money to keep their equipment up do date, and four mechs are going to be costly.
I suppose there will be a few difficulty spikes here and there when you meet monsters who are fond of lightning attacks, but other than that and maybe the occasional slime you're not going to have many problems I think, mechs are also immune to most statuses too.
What I don't know is if a full mech party is good against LDS, the first form isn't a problem but its second form might damage you faster than you can heal in the case of mechs when it begins spamming Double Star Buster every turn.

Depends on the characters.
If you ask me I'd say the overall best places are.

-Mayor's Nightmare quest, you can farm the Guckies in the storage easily and pretty fast, great for fast lvl2-3 tablets, sucks if you're Laura though.
-Starship Anchor, farming the comet demons over and over
-All the quests with Mural monsters
-Leith Torles' Tower opening the last chest repeatedly with the last turn exploit for nearly guaranteed lvl4 tablets

I like Deities' Table but I can't deal with reels for the mirror shards, it's too easy to pass them and lose an encounter, Starship Anchor is better on that, the Coliseum Ruins quest might be good if you want to farm the plant monster in the barrels but you need some luck or many reloads, generally speaking most mosters tied to map events tend to drop tablets, so it's either that or exploiting fixed chests like the ones in the Twin Moon Temple, Leith Torles' Tower or Armand's hideout.

What I'd rather like is finding guns in chests.

Yes, the advantage is that Leith Torles' Tower is great for high level battles, so fight a lot, fight the upper level seal monsters to spark shit, get down and waste the remaining turns to open the chest on your last one, it's 90% of the times a Lvl4 tablet, and some of the seal bosses are almost as good as Giants to spark stuff.
>>3703874
>It's generally a bad idea.
Depends on how fast and well protected your characters are, getting stunned by tail attacks sucks, but that's what dragons do, you gotta deal with it regardless of the number of characters you deploy.
The Yellow Dragon that protects the Dragonheart is far tougher than the Blue or Red ones, but even so, there's worse enemies to deal with, Tagut for instance.
>>3703886
The game looks pretty good even for today's standards, kinda like Frontier 2, but with far better sprites and arenas.
Some areas also have a fixed camera which makes them very reminiscent of the old SNES SaGa, the moving camera of other areas kind of zooms in too much sometimes and at some angles sprites face the wrong direction sometimes but it still looks very good, some sprites like the Demon Tomes, Hanumans and Basil Galeos are also really well done, still an impressive work considering it was made using Adobe in the early 2000.

They added an optional dungeon that lets you wimp out of the original games formerly unforgiving and basically uncheesable challenges. If you were cheesing in the original game you were actually playing the game correctly doing the things you actually had to do to win. That optional dungeon lets you grind and farm overpowered items to protect your characters, and ends up increasing the number of items that you can have to block devastating status effects and things like that.

If you never go in that dungeon or do the extra quest that gives you that one powerful item, then it's mostly the same as the original.

In terms of general difficulty I'd say that from it's more or less:
Hanging Gardens=Undercity Pharos>Nakle Lines>Starship Anchor=Avalon=Twinmoon Temple>Deities' Table
Difficulty also varies depending on the order you try to take them on, at low level the Nakle Lines and Starship Anchor might be really hard due to the bosses sapping your LP like crazy, at high level Undercity Pharos or Hanging Gardens are a pain because the normal encounters might tire you out before you figure out how to get to the boss or the tetraforce, it all depends on different factors, including how familiar you are with the game of course.

It fixes all the bugs from the original so it's good enough for me, the optional dungeon has a chance of giving you broken items early that kinda alter the balance of the game, nobody forces you to play through it anyway. The extensive bugfix alone makes it worth it for me, but I have different priorities from most people.
One other thing they've added is a lot of descriptions for everything, commands, formations and all of that have comprehensive descriptions about their effects, they've also added a few items in the castle that let you see your characters' weight and dark score.
The only bad thing is the optional dungeon, it kinda balances itself out by having a bullshit special boss at the end but I mostly agree with>>3706701, if you take time to grind chests in there it kinda ruins the game, then again, I don't think newcomers can really exploit it all that much besides getting some better equipment early.

The boss in Undercity Pharos and Hanging Gardens are really easy though

Nakle Lines forces you to go through a lot of encounters before you get to the boss who demands that you have enough LP to soak him up, without the Tetra Force it ends up being the hardest test of conserving resources.

I started playing romancing saga 2 recently, which is my first saga game, and I'm a little lost. I managed to get my revenge on a monster-in-a-box after wiping out once but I feel like I'm playing the game wrong because I don't have enough information. Is there some sort of instruction manual I should read which explains stuff like
- How do deflect and parry work? Which is better?
- How do I know which weapon to pick for each character?
- Are there any negative consequences to running away from battles?
- Is there an easy way to avoid fighting battles? I can see enemies running around but I can't ever avoid/outrun them.
- Is there any way to get LP back?

Or am I supposed to be totally lost and to blindly pick moves without knowing how they work?

A hardcore masochist then.
>- How do deflect and parry work?
They have around 80% chances of completely nullifying a direct physical attack on the user, any indirect physical attack, magic or special abilities do not trigger Parry type waza.
>Which is better?
They're the same ability for different weapons.
>How do I know which weapon to pick for each character?
Most characters are fine with their starter weapons but some others actually spark differently than other characters in the same class.
Stat wise, characters with high STR hit harder with Swords/Great Swords/Spears/Axes/Maces and Martial arts, better DEX makes them hit harder with rapiers and bows.
>Are there any negative consequences to running away from battles?
The enemies get stronger even faster than you do
>Is there an easy way to avoid fighting battles?
Learn enemy patterns, each enemy family has their own movement patterns. There's no item or ability that lets you avoid battles completely.
>Is there any way to get LP back?
Life Potions, but they're basically limited in number(Unless you play the remaster) and extremely tedious to get. You get some of them in your treasury with each generation shift, otherwise you'll have to buy them from the witch in South Rongit and have fun with that, red slimes also MIGHT drop them. In the remaster they're also a rare chest treasure in the maze of memories.
Each potion restores a whole -1- LP
>Or am I supposed to be totally lost and to blindly pick moves without knowing how they work?
Well, yes, unless you have the manual, and the manual still didn't explain most things, SaGa was all about empirical knowledge until very recently when they decided to make the games slightly more accessible.

RS2 isn't a good place to start though.

To further expand on my post, since you decided to start with one of the hardest games in the series for some reason:

Do not play SaGa games like a Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest or other JRPG, it doesn't work in here, SaGa games require a different mindset altogether.

DO NOT GRIND, especially in RomaSaGa 2, grinding is not only unnecessary, grinding, especially mindless grinding, can and will make the game unwinnable, grinding in SaGa games is something that is basically postgame content when the only thing left to do is kill a fully powered up final boss, if you need to grind in any other situation it means you've messed up your game plan big time somehow, learn to plan your growth, it's not easy to do, especially if you start with RomaSaGa 2, but you'll get the hang of it.

Do not be afraid of death, RomaSaGa 2 makes death an actual part of the game's strategy and general mechanics, the game was explicitly designed to make you die or party wipe as much as possible starting from Gerald's generation. A good player will know how to avoid or even exploit the death of a party member.

Do not diss magic, magic is the fulcrum of your strategies and arguably the most powerful tool in RomaSaGa 2, not using magic means you like to restart your game often because at some point even normal enemies will walk all over you if you didn't develop magic.

Since you're play RomaSaGa 2, always expect the worst case scenario and plan accordingly, the game likes to throw you against seemingly impossible odds or fucking you over with the weirdest turns of events, do not trust anyone, not even your items.

Lastly, I personally suggest you to stop playing 2 altogether and play some other game first, SaGa Frontier is fine for beginners although it works on a different system than RomaSaGa 2, RomaSaGa 3 might be even better if you want to play 2 that much but keep in mind that all SaGa games are different and have many unique gimmicks, rulesets and mechanics in each title.

A lot of that stuff isn't in the manual because you have to figure out those things by yourself.

Also since it is a SaGa game, it isn't unheard of scrapping a file and restarting the game. Each time you will figure it out more and more until you get further and further. That was my struggle with Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song. I probably dropped it for a year after playing two or three different files. Then tried again and restarted a couple more times until it clicked with me, all without any walkthroughs. You have to be in the mindset that it is okay to fail. >How many generations are there in romancing saga 2?
There is virtually no fixed number of generation shifts, the game works on various triggers based on the number of quests, type of quests and "game time" to determine a generation shift, game time being determined by the number of battles fought.
Generally speaking, playing the game normally usually causes a generation shift each three or four quests completed in the game, though again, some quests might force a generation shift regardless of said numbers, played in a "normal" way you can expect around six or seven generation shifts, if you want to do unorthodox runs like the Final Emperors VS the world runs then you'll get less generation shifts, the game is built in such a way that you can even defeat all the seven heroes during one generation without triggering a generation shift at all, though it takes some planning to do so.
Mind that a generation shift involves one of those transition screens that says "XXX years later...", normal party wipes aren't generation shifts and do not work as such.

The trick with Frontier 2's magic is equipping the right combination of Quells, early on in the game you'll be forced to rely on tools but Quells is where it's truly at, it is also the game that effectively introduced channeling, so if you've played either Unlimited or Minstrel Song you'll easily get into it, both of those games refined Frontier 2's idea.

Being able to learn magic through command inputs or randomly is also a nice idea, it's pretty much the stepping stone between Frontier and the later games.

>Though I got slaughtered by his actual second phase.
Well, that's Noel for you, his second phase requires a really tight strategy, it's not something you can do casually like Bokuohn or Dantarg, Noel uses a rather tough moveset that absolutely requires you to have some hard counters, if you don't have those you're getting slaughtered no matter how high your stats are.

>On a side note, should I use the bonus content or not? I've enabled it but I'm worried that it will break the game so I haven't touched it.
The thing with the new content isn't that it "breaks" the game in ways that could be said of other, easier series, so much that it gives you subtle advantages to nudge you away from situations that would make the game unwinnable.

For one, you can get LP potions in the Maze of Memory as a random treasure, meaning you're less likely to run into a situation where you're the Last Emperor/ess and you can't get them from the Witch anymore, locking you into taking on the Heroes with however much LP you have left.
This also means you can be more wasteful with them and use them to keep party members you like alive if you really want, which is pretty backwards from the way the original made you strategize but isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The new classes feel like they're just for convenience to give you more coverage of weapon type users, but don't feel like they're "game-breakingly" strong- if anything, they're pretty fun.
You do get weapons that are stronger than anything in the main game, though, which is pretty tempting, and the real reason people act like the new stuff is a bad thing is because there's a new accessory from an endgame quest that lets you have an additional male be immune to Rocbouquet's charm. And that's it, really.

Among said content there's also an optional superboss that's immune to the game's main "cheese" method, which is pretty cute.
However since the game's main appeal has always been "being batshit hard," it's ultimately up to you whether to use that stuff or ignore it. Which is the main reason it gave you the option to turn it off.

I did notice that the Orchard really makes you roll in money compared to the original, so there's that I guess.

Though you don't really need to learn ALL magic or waza that early, your priority should be learning Guard Beast and Regenerate as they're bread and butter spells for bosses. Also, as>>3717185 says, it's actually more convenient to use Gustave's party in Vogelang rather than killing skellies if you want to grind early, Tiger Beetles, and the Griffin if you're gutsy, are pretty good for learning stuff fast.

>Should I Really play SaGa frontier?
Of course.
>A lot of people say its unfinished. Jus how much so?
There have been some quest cut, as a result Furdo's Workshop's and the Biolab still have their content but no story to contextualize it. One of the MCs got cut near the end of development so he's only playable as a normal party member and some parts of his quest still remains in the game in form of dialogues with other characters during other quests which can lead to wonder what the hell some people are even talking about, other than those there are small tidbits that got scrapped during development for other reasons, like one MC's gimmick for romance endings. Some places like Nelson were supposed to have some lore bits but they suffered from cuts as well.
Gameplay is fine and arguably one of the big steps forward for the series, if not a bit too easy and breakable for some people.

If you want some sort of persuasion based on more objective facts, consider that SaGa Frontier is one of the best selling PS games of all time in Japan, despite having suffered from heavy content cuts.
Besides, it's not nearly as offensive as Xenogears, and SF is actually a gameplay driven game.

No captcha, I already played enough Romancing SaGa 2, leave me alone, I just want to post on 4chan.

I cleared Taria's quest, what a hell of a ride her final boss was, I guess this game has routes, I didn't trigger the event shown in famitsu during her quest, I got a completely different one and I guess that's why her final boss battle was different from Leonard's, Firebringer also works differently from Leonard's quest, I was surprised.

Pretty interesting story I must say, it starts off weak but catches on near midgame, wonder how different her other route is.
And jesus christ, just how many quests are in this game? I can't believe they crammed in so much stuff to do, there's little reason to fight anything outside of quests unless you're hunting for certain ingredients.

Did anyone know what the fuck was going on in the plot during their first playthrough? I have a general idea of what I'm supposed to do most of the time, but no idea why my party is doing half of the shit they do in the story or how any of the events tie together. The whole game just feels very inconsistent and random - like the characters are just walking around with no actual clear objective outside of some vague leads and then consistently end up in some random place where an important event is happening about something. I personally didn't care much, but effectively the game doesn't really pick up in terms of plot until you get Borgin, the rest is basically a quest of the week while time travelling back and forth.
The DS remake makes it vaguely more consistent but it's still a pretty random story, I personally don't mind but I can see why people wouldn't like it.
>Treasure of the Rudras had the exact same problem
I don't completely agree with that, it is similar to SaGa 3 in the sense that you don't have any solid lead on what you're looking for until the end but Rudra does have an individual plot for the protagonists, some have it more consistent like Surlent while others are weaker, like Liza, but the story is there, Sion has to find out what's going on with the appearance of a giant and all the weird changes in the world due to the prophecy, and he has to become a knight on top of that, Liza is on her quest as a ecofriendly priestess and Surlent gets killed over and over because he's a dumb fucker despite being supposedly the most intelligent of the MCs, the problem most people have with Rudra is that each MC tells a small part of a big story until they all unite and being able to switch on the fly might make the plot hard to follow, SaGa is similar but it works a bit differently because all the plot is self contained in a MC story despite having things in common with others, Rudra has three plotlines that converge into a singular one and you need to switch between all of the three often leaving something hanging, which might be hard to follow, or even remember at all.

I did it! The final boss was balls-to-the-wall but I actually won on my first try; I was able to set up plenty of buffs on the first phase of the fight (gave my male tactician the cursed ring which made him immune to status I think), including my newly-obtained auto-revive. I had done a bit of grinding to prepare for endgame and I guess it paid off. I was also very lucky with the boss missing a couple crucial attacks and I still ended up running out of magic on all of my casters, barely surviving through using balms.

I think I faced the "weaker" forms of all the heroes and the final boss. Is this because I didn't fight a lot of random battles? How many fights do I need to have for them to get a strength boost?

In retrospect the android version's bonus content made the game easier than it should have been; I had a lot of surplus money, got an overpowered formation, and was able to fight some high-level enemies in the brief foray into the maze of memories I made earlier. I'm going to explore the maze then start a new playthrough soon.

Yeah, that's the plan, the Demonstone Ring protects you against charm, you're correct on that, did you get the Intaglio Ring from Viktor? That wards off even Astral Gate.
>Is this because I didn't fight a lot of random battles?
It depends, some heroes get stronger depending on the number of battles you fight, some others get stronger if you completed certain events or completed then in a certain order, if you kill Rocbouquet before meeting Noel for instance he won't give you the option of making peace and you'll fight him directly in his second form, killing the Lord of the Sea makes Subier go into his second form and so on, there's some of them who have weird flags like Dantarg, who has up to four different forms which iirc aren't actually linked to the number of battles fought, but I don't really remember all of the flags for each hero's different form.

Congratulation on winning against the heroes anyway, they're pretty tough, try taking on the Dread Queen, she's a bit cheap and I personally don't like her battle too much outside of her being immune to Quicktime, which is something the Seven Heroes should have got too.

How did you run out of JP on your casters though? Especially if you did grind enough to get Reviva, you should have more than enough JP to nuke them into oblivion with Crimson Flare doing like, 4000-5000 damage or more for each spell.

I never got quicktime but it does seem very overpowered.

Some other notes from my playthrough, and questions for future runs:
- I killed the brawler, which initially caused them all to disappear. But after having a brawler as emperor the place got re-populated and I was able to recruit brawlers.
- To level up quick I fought water dragons in the forest tower where you fight rocbouquet. They give 5555 exp each and respawn when you leave the room.
- I'm interested in the non-final emperor as final emperor trick. However one of the requirements is fighting Subier in the sunken ship. Can you make him appear there without killing the whale guy?
- How do you control where dantarg appears/doesn't appear?
- Is it actually better to use the same weapon type (or shared weapon type e.g. spears and rapiers) to pass on better weapon levels to future generations? Or do you get the same global experience regardless of how many characters are using a weapon?
- Do fusion attacks give full weapon experience to both magic types or half?

Yeah, I don't think killing the Lord of the Sea influences the spawn location at all, it just makes him go into his second form.
>How do you control where dantarg appears/doesn't appear?
I don't think you can, iirc his spawn points also change depending on his form, in all my playthroughs I never saw him spawn in any other place than the cave during the lost child quest and the cave during the first quest for the Saigo herders, but according to the game's data he can also appear in the cave where you find the minstrel's instruments and the first cave with the undeads, and of course the last dungeon.
>Or do you get the same global experience regardless of how many characters are using a weapon?
The global levels are influenced by your current highest level iirc, so they shouldn't be influenced by how many characters are using a certain weapon type but rather the maximum available level in your party
>Do fusion attacks give full weapon experience to both magic types or half?
I don't honestly know about this, you should check a wiki, try Kaerulabo, they usually have this kind of things explained in depth.
>Does the halberd give axe exp
Nope, it's a spear
>can it spark axe techs?
Rumours around the internet say that it was originally meant to work as such but I haven't found any actual source, in any case it doesn't, but you can use Axe waza with it if you have them in your list.

No. What's that?

Thanks for the answers.

I found out about global and personal levels from a post on gamefaqs:

[Global level growth] = [Skill points received] + [MP/SP expended on skills of a specific type]

[Personal level growth] = ([Number of turns skill type was used on] / [Total number of turns]) x [Skill points received]

And fusion attacks count for both types of magic.

>No. What's that?
It's a built in unlockable waza for the Liberty Staff you find in the Sorcerer's house on Komulune, I guess it's localized as Komroon or something. It buffs spell damage obscenely, get your hands on it and try it out for yourself, your Crimson Flares will probably do around 5000 HP if not 6000 HP of damage per cast on a blessed magician, at least judging by your fire level since you did get Reviva.
>And fusion attacks count for both types of magic.
That they obviously do, but do they give half or full EXP? That's whay I don't know.
By logic they should give half and half but you never know.

Iirc you get locked out of all the Garon questline, so the invasion at Nuono and the sunken ship quest, and of course by proxy you can't recruit the Iris tribe or get to the village of the ancients, not to mention missing out on one of the best classes and formations in the game.

You can, I just found out. You need to get the stone boat from the forest so you can find out from the salamanders that the sorcerer is shady. Then when you talk to him for the first time you have the option to fight.
Unfortunately for me, his stone shower OHKOs my entire team at this point. He also regenerates HP and seems to be resistant to stun so I can't beat him yet. And I don't want to but off the quest otherwise there won't be enough time for the second half of the quest to occur.

Interesting to hear about the pirate stuff, thankfully I won't have to test it out now.

Neat.
But then you'll get locked out of the second quest in Komulune if you kill him, though I suppose that would still let you recruit salamanders.
You'll probably won't be able to explore his mansion though, which means no Liberty Staff, so no Bless at all, I wonder how that would impact generation shifts though.
I wish they made more routes for more quests really, there's hardly an incentive to take certain routes sometimes.

When exactly do you get a chance to use them? I'm at about 1256 going in chronological order with both characters and have only gotten to use Nebelstern once and haven't gotten Kelvin again since the very beginning. I'm not really too concerned since I have almost everything as it is, but it would be nice to get a few of the spells they can learn.

Well, the only thing you would really want to grind for is the Griffins in "Showdown! Alexei" I believe, since that's the only time you can fight a version of them that drops Water Mirrors, which are incredibly good shields. The best. The Crystal Wings are also good, but the flying dragons in the snowfields also drop them.

I know you can do the bridge/forest where you get the ice lance before that one, even though it comes chronologically after.

I don't think anybody is totally sure what locks you out of quest lines, but Nebelstern is one you can miss. If you've done them in chronological order, if General's memories isn't already open, then at the part you're at, it should open right after the anime faith fiasco, and I think you can do it before Wil vs Egg. Johan the Assassin and General's Memories should be open at about the same time and can be considered side quests that'll disappear if you leave them waiting. Nebelstern has a water mirror you can strip off him later, and Johan has a hybrid art that no one else can learn. Johan is real good at learning the sword arts Gustave isn't, and is a good candidate to learn the other tree hybrid art for swords too. Nebelstern is real good at beast arts iirc, so if you haven't gotten regenerate and guard beast, he'll get em for ya. I think you can even take him to Laubholz, but it's not the best idea.

FFII is the grandpa of SaGa, it's a honorary member of the series at the very least, pretty much like The Last Remnant.
>if so, whats the best version to play?
Either the NES original or the Wonderswan/PS remakes, avoid the GBA/PSP remakes because they dumb down the difficulty considerably, the WSC/PS remake is basically a direct port with enhanced graphics, music and some bugfixes.
I personally really appreciate the enemy placement as the game provides you exactly what you need to fight or even exploit if you follow the plot instead of wandering around, which is why I can't understand people who grind or those who think that hitting themselves is the proper and best way to play. Other than that though, it's still a very basic system even if you compare it to SaGa 1.
>>3730084
Ain't that a wonderful feeling?
>>3730315
Scarlet has a lot of throwbacks to earlier titles, Urpina's theme has a part that is basically Imperial SaGa's common battle theme on a different key, there's a semigeneric recruitable character which has exactly the same braids as Sara from RomaSaGa 3 and a very similar face too, many weapons in the top tier forging paths are from Minstrel Song, not to mention the Dragon Spear Gae Bolg from the SNES games is finally back with Dragon's Descent as a built in waza and you get it as a drop from Dragon Rulers, some Frontier spells like Tower are back and so on.
It's a great game, wish they made some animations a bit better and added some monster variety, but it's definitely a great mainline game with tons of content and quite a lot of new mechanics to learn and have fun with.

I started Romancing SaGa 2 (sfc) recently and have a couple questions. First, how do I start research on new weapons and armor? I've tried talking to the blacksmiths but I get nowhere. So when do these games get hard? Beat the first three on gameboy and the first Romancing SaGa on SNES and none have given me that much trouble. Even Romancing SaGa's final boss wasn't too hard once I started playing more strategically.

It strikes me that in these games you just need to be a little more cautious and calculated when making gameplay decisions. It gives you the ability to save anywhere and everywhere, so that's honestly a large asset on how to play the game.

Anyway, I hear SaGa 2 is very difficult. Any others titles near its difficulty level?

That's the way to do it, it's all about creating a good strategy to counter things and knowing how the game work, if you understand this you'll hardly have much trouble with the series, at least, anything that isn't RomaSaGa 2 or Unlimited, but one is almost gratuitously difficult and with tons of difficulty spikes and the other one is just plain weird to play albeit suffering from a few crippling design decisions that almost erase any challenge in the game once you find them.

It's not really about permanence and I don't like forums, I prefer places where people can post as Anon without being forced to create an account for whatever reason.
Also, I said Infinity but I had some kind of lapsus, I meant Eternitychan, VF posted a link to the SaGa thread there with the Scarlet Grace review, it's a nice place as long as you don't mind the nonexistent traffic and old interface, most of the userbase there is made up of oldfags too and the place is not well known so there's zero shitposting which is good too.

http://www.eternitychan.org/general/res/5709.html

We should be able to talk about the series at our own pace without threads dying, so even getting one reply a week is more than enough, I'd like to be able to keep the threads on /vr/ too but it's already too fast of a board for us, and despite my personal complaints about the rule enforcement, Anon is still kind of right, Eternitychan doesn't have that ruleset so people there could discuss the series however they want, lack of WEBMs and small file upload size shouldn't be much of an issue, I hope.
And I'm kind of tired of having the constant worry about threads dying and having to make a new one all the time, I'm not always able to check on them and there's not enough traffic to keep them on.

Anyway, you people decide, I'll keep making these threads but from today on I'll also post stuff on Eternity and eventually make more threads there, if people come together and decide to move them to a more convenient place, all the better.

I've got better things to do than spreading my own shitty opinions and I do not want to be even remotely associated with such people. And again, permanence isn't really my personal concern, especially when it leads to garbage like RPGcodex, Wikis and all that stuff, I just want a place like 4chan where everybody can post what they want, how they want and when they want, so far the only possible alternative to this place is Eternity because it works mostly the same and it's even slower, making a forum is out of the question for me, I post in here because I don't like forums.

Otherwise I can just stop making threads altogether, but I would hate to see SaGa threads being spammed all over /vr/ like Chrono Trigger or FFVI threads.
The truth is that there's not enough people to sustain the thread, even if we allow non retro stuff and try to move the threads to /vg/ there's only so much the usual people can talk about and SaGa isn't as famous as other series so there's not many people who get into it either. RS3, if only because it'll look even worse next to the other two games if you play it last.

Don't play Sara or Harid first; the former can screw you over at the literal final boss if she's carrying your party because you don't get to use her, the latter misses out on quests while you're experimenting.

It's pretty much the same deal as RS2 except monster scaling doesn't go by BR - it's based off of your average party HP and how many encounters you've killed that belong to the family of monster you're fighting, not how many monsters you've fought in general, and is incredibly undertuned to the point where no random encounter types outside of giants and dragons, both of which might as well be fixed encounters for all the two areas you find them in, will pose a threat to you.

No, that's a mechanic mostly unique to RS2. Getting a game over in RS3 just ends the game unless you're fighting one of the four main bosses or fighting in the tournament.

All of those are fine choices, play Frontier if you want something different and crazier in terms of scenario and characters, play RomaSaGa 3 if you want a more traditional high fantasy SaGa scenario, play Minstrel Song if you want a game full of mechanics from all of the other games in the series and a great remake.
>Are there any characters recommended to play first / not to play first?
In Frontier avoid Lute and Riki/Coon, Lute's story is pretty bad and you can risk getting locked in the final dungeon five minutes into the game, Riki/Coon's quest is good but you have to learn how to use monsters and it's overall one of the harder, if not the hardest scenario in the game, all the other MCs are fine.

In RomaSaGa 3 there's not really much difference between MCs except for Harid, who starts with a high Greed counter, meaning that you might miss on some quests, but you just have to be a nice guy and not ask for money or other stuff while doing quests and you're mostly safe.

In Minstrel Song I'd avoid Grey since his own quest can be infuriating due to having to farm a certain rare material, you can still ignore his quest but where's the fun in that? Aisha is also the weakest MC at the start of the game and might be hard to manage compared to other characters, Barbara is nice because she's one of the best MCs stat wise and starts in a very good strategic position in the map so you can do all quests very easily, her quest also finishes when you start the game so you have more time for exploration and side quests.

>Anything important I should know game mechanics-wise?
RomaSaGa 3 has Greed counter nad Commander Mode, which are nice gmmicks, Frontier introduces combos which became a staple mechanic to this day, Minstrel Song is basically a bit of everything before it plus some new things like Event Rank and Vortexes, you'll have to learn how to use all of these.
>Does the battle rank work like RS2?
Nope, RomaSaGa 3 BR works by family type instead of being global, so the more enemies of a certain family you fight the stronger said family get, Frontier uses standard BR, Minstrel Song has standard BR that works in tandem with ER.
>Would you recommend playing without resetting?
You don't really need to reset in the first place in RomaSaGa 3 unless you somehow fuck up in a few characters' quests like Julian and get locked in one of the tougher dungeons, Frontier might also do this to you on Lute's scenario. Minstrel Song gets increasingly difficult and grindy the more quests you miss, so it's not impossible to slowly grind to the point you can finish it but the game's pace wuld become glacial if you miss too many quests, not to mention certain quest related items which help a lot, especially against Saruin.
>are all saga games like that?
No, death and party wipes being integral to the gameplay are a RomaSaGa 2 design choice, none of the other games are like that, with some exceptions like the four noble demons battles and some rare event battles where you can lose at the cost of altering a quest's outcome, you'll get a game over.
Remember that if a MC runs out of LP you also get a game over.

Note: It takes an absolute fuckton of fights to get enemies to scale up this way, way in excess of anything reasonable. Playing the game normally will have your endgame encounters be sadsack enemies that get wiped in a single AoE that would've maybe been a challenge in the midgame, if not even earlier than that. Not to mention that if you do complete the quest in the only place where you can get fixed Asuras you lock yourself out of them completely, unless you're Harid.

I've never gotten those greaves but I got the Staff on the first screen of those caves during that exact adventure.

The drop rates in all SaGa games are ridiculous, but SF2 might be the worst, every single fixed battle in Laubholz has a scripted rare drop. Even innocuous groups of zombies drop lake robes, it's horrible. One boss even drops both black and red stone armor, and you're gonna want to reset if you get the red one. And you ARE going to want a Lake Robe, Stardust Robe, or Black Stone Armor on everyone if you fight the game's super boss, along with Crystal Wings and a Water Mirror on everyone.

There's a hat called the Funny Cap that is the only non-shield item to give physical evasion, it's incredibly useful, and it pretty much ONLY drops from a single skeleton in the Marquis' basement at the start of Gustave's adventures.

Luckily, the one item you NEED to get to make the final boss not absolute misery to fight is the Mystic Veil, which drops from the Lich, who will respawn indefinitely if you don't take the anima crystal from the basement in Laubholz.

Not really, you just have to fight some battles and they will be built, I believe five battles are enough for any facility to pop up.

Note that it takes a full generational shift for equipment to get distributed to shops, which is required before you can research the next stage. So if you want to get cross claymores by endgame don't save the research for the end.

By the way I've also observed some oddities with romasaga2's battle count, I was counting out 16 battles to make use of the 8-15 mechanic but sometimes it took more or less fights to reach the magic number. Also it seemed like 12 battles got added to the count after each generation but those battles didn't give money or advance research.

It's got the same problem as Minstrel Song, in that there is one bulletproof strategy that trivializes every challenging encounter, and it's the same one in both games. Even gods can be crippled I suppose.

I made a party with sword user, axe user, spear user, gun user, and martial user, and taught them all magic.

But what I should have done is made 5 spear users and used nothing but acupuncture, and there is no way literally any encounter in the game will win that battle of attrition.

Or maybe I could have just used one guy. One guy doing nothing but acupuncture, no combos. win every fight.

it's a god damn stupid game sometimes.

Well, the same could be said for basically every game in the series, every game has its achilles' heel/easymodo of sorts, be it Quicktime, cumulative debuffs, halberds, overdrive, mechs, chainsaws, you name it.
What sets some games apart from others is how hard is to get certain things or understand what's broken, Acupuncture and Reverse Delta make everything but Puree and Random Arrow not worth using or even getting if you want to minmax because there's nothing that can outperform these, and coupled with the really broken forging system the game loses a lot in terms of balance, especially on new game+.
Minstrel Song has Halberds but at least it still encourages you to use other stuff because certain waza are still more convenient if you want to apply debuffs or give you better utility and damage type is still a thing, cumulative debuffs were a mistake but 10FS Saruin would be unbeatable without them.
RomaSaGa 3, let's forget about it because between Commander Mode, Afterimage sword and debuffs it's really easy to make the game play itself.
RomaSaGa 2 has Quicktime, Bless and Rapid Stream, but at least you need to grind a lot to get Quicktime.
Frontier can be called "balanced" because when almost everything is broken nothing is, you just choose a flavour and see what you can do with it.

To this day, I guess only Frontier 2 is what I would call "kinda" balanced, Scarlet is up there too, were it not for Thunderbringer, Random Arrow and Air Throw making every one on one fight ridiculous it would be arguably the most balanced game but these three and the fact that the BR only boosts enemy stats makes it a bit disappointing, especially when everything else works flawlessly.
That said, it's still a better system than most other japanese RPG, and even many western ones, not even acupuncture will magically steamroll everything on its own.

Monica is also pretty bad stat wise so it's best for you to focus on utilities rather than damage, rapiers/bows and/or magic are the best choice for her, everything else will be subpar unless you gave her specific combinations and grind her proficiencies a lot to balance her crappy stats.

Well, this needs some explanation.
Up to Minstrel Song Kawazu's philosophy was letting players learn how to play the game empirically, due to the huge backlash of Unlimited: Saga on this point he decided to be a bit more open to avoid alienating people, mind that Unlimited: Saga was called a kusoge in japan for the sole reason of being inaccessible, not because it was a bad game or anything, but simply because neither the game nor the manual explained anything at all, which caused tremendous frustration to even many old SaGa players.
Minstrel Song then took that direction, do not simplify the game and do not explain everything, but give the player some sort of hints and directions and at least explain the major mechanics of the game a bit so newcomers would not return the game to the shop on day one and old players would still find pleasure in learning tricks by themselves.
All SaGa games after Minstrel Song are like that, the DS remakes improvements such as Sensei's pink expy and being able to see the monster forms you'll morph into or Scarlet's TIPS section which only fills up as you actually activate something in game all follow that kind of idea, give the player directions without explaining too much or handhold him.
FromSoft does mostly the same thing with their games, see Armored Core or King's Field, ironically enough they started to do the same with Blooborne and the Soul series to an extent, give vague hints and directions but not explain things.
>>3743496

Once you unlock the Make Arrangements skill, you'll win everything but the most stacked-against-you buyouts by doing this: spending your own money to give you a buffer if the property you're purchasing is that far ahead of what your two main groups can give you, spamming Make Arrangements until all of your groups are black, hit Naj Hot Blood+Jungle Fever, then repeat. Supplement with groups like Porcelain and Hotels if/when you get them, since they're both reasonably high value and easier to acquire than stuff like Shipbuilding.

I'm trying to fight Noel (first form, haven't killed Rocbouquet) in RS2, but when he gets to the second phase he regenerates 999hp each turn, making it very difficult to deal a significant amount of damage and stay alive. Most guides for SaGa games are pretty shit and it's rare that you'll have all the information on a game available without having to do some digging. I guess I technically did. I somehow managed to beat full power Firebringer, had to retry six times during different phases but I think I got a strategy down.
Shit was brutal though, he doesn't really fuck around with gimmicks, every command can easily turn the tide in his favour.
>>3749238
I gave a quick look to some wikis online and none seem to mention which element Noel is attuned to.
My personal guess is that since he's a dragon type with fire moves like Heat Hand he's fire based, but I might be wrong.
You should equip heat resistant stuff to deal with Red Dragon Wave, Kamaitachi can be nullified and his sword techs too, that leaves you vulnerable to Red Dragon Wave and Moonshade, I don't remember whether you can block Hell Claw like a sword waza, considering it has a cutting modifier you should but I'm not really certain.

There is a certain fusion spell that can make you completely invulnerable to anything Noel dishes at you though, the catch is you need quite a lot of levels to get it.

Apparently Mist Cover increases your accuracy to 100%, so you can use the rapid stream formation to ensure you go first and use Mist Cover + feint/daze/whatever to ensure you stun the enemy. Sort of a discount quicktime for enemies susceptible to stun. Gameplay wise you don't need that much knowledge of japanese, the system is pretty intuitive and if you know the basic ruleset of SaGa like weapon damage modifiers, sparking and magic you're mostly set, you need to know at least some basic japanese to read the effect of formations, waza and reward conditions though, but it's nothing you can't translate with google from a Wiki.

Plot wise, yeah, you definitely need to know the language, and since this title is surprisingly heavy on writing you can't really enjoy it without reading, there's not many jokes or puns but there are some references to older games and some parts of the plot are a bit convoluted, especially in Taria's story if you take a certain route, some quests also need you to know what you're doing, if you can't read some choices or dialogues you're going to screw up and miss some great rewards or get into a quest branch or game route you don't want, and if you're not playing as Leonard you can easily lock yourself into a game file with full powered Firebringer, and trust me, if you haven't recruited certain characters it is unwinnable, you won't get past the first phase at all.

I hope for you guys they localize it, in japan it was well received, it got great ratings and even moved quite a few Vita units, around 35K bundles alone were sold iirc, so maybe Squenix will take a chance and localize it in the west, or better yet make a PC port, after all it runs on Unity so I guess it wouldnt be too hard or expensive to do.

The real danger is getting psyched and losing turns to mental status effects. That's why you need the mystic veil, to keep at least one character active to be able to heal the others. In terms of the battle of LP attrition, you will not lose if you can correctly make combos and know how to maximize your SP enhance and keep your SP above 50%. As long as you do not bleed LP from other attacks, you do not need Dead Stones.

On the other hand, something I did have was Crystal Wing boots to nullify sonic attacks on all my members, and that makes a big difference. If I had had more than one Mystic Veil, I'm sure I would not have needed even that.

But then, if I didn't have any Mystic Veils at all, I wouldn't even try to fight the Egg at full power, just give up and go home at that point.

>>3756683
I have no problem with that, it's just that most people here find it too primitive and limited so it rarely gets mentioned. I personally think it had many nice ideas although poorly implemented, but some other SaGa games can be accused of the same, see the first Romancing game for instance.
>>3756690
Most JRPGs only have one or two things similar to SaGa, you can try Traverse: Starlight and Prairie for the SNES if you can read Japanese, it's fairly similar to SaGa overall but with just one MC instead of multiple ones and no weird monster races.
The only game that is really similar to SaGa so far is The Legend of Legacy for the 3DS, and that's because it's a straight up clone made by some former Squenix employees who worked on SaGa games, it's not that good though. Another SaGa-like by them is in the works for the 3DS, that one seems a bit more promising that the first one.

There was a lot that got on my nerves near the end but overall I thought it was pretty great. I really liked the the way magic and elements worked with the tools and quells you have equipped and how you learned spells from combining elements. Same with arts. I'm glad they went back to having the arts being shared with the entire party instead of individual characters. Lots of really great improvements and would have easily been one of my favorite games if it weren't for the abysmal drop rates for so many different items. I felt like a lot of the endgame stores were useless and there was nothing I wanted to spend my 10k chips and crowns on. Would have been nice if they sold a few of the rare items instead of forcing you to farm for them. At first I didn't like how limiting the different scenarios are, but I felt like that was part of the challenge that made it fun. Would have been nice to have a few more areas and sidequests to do between scenarios but oh well.
At the end the timer was right around 80 hours, but I spent quite a bit of time reloading trying to get enhanced armor to drop in Wil vs The Egg, South Moundtop, the Dynasty Hopper (I'm a dumbass and didn't know it respawned), and sparking with the megalith beast, so probably all together somewhere between 85-90 hours.

Asellus is a good one as your second or third since it gives you a character who grows the way Humans do but can absorb monsters like a Mystic making her good for learning Mystics. I say second or third because her scenario is pretty much a never-ending series of boss fights out of nowhere.

>if it weren't for the abysmal drop rates for so many different items.
Most SaGa games are like that, there's tons of great items that are one time only and have terrible drop rates.
Some of them also aren't really all that great depending on where you are in the game, you mention the Dynasty Hopper, the Golden Axe isn't really that good compared to what you can get in the shops at that point in the game and even in NG+ you aren't strong enough to fight it early, I don't think you can instakill it feasibly and you also have to fight Sargon.
Some items are also Go!Go!Digger only, so in a way it's worse than other games.
>Would have been nice to have a few more areas and sidequests to do between scenarios but oh well.
I agree, I also wish you could use certain characters like Cielmer or Kelvin more, Johan also didn't deserve to have parts of his story in the novel but not in the game, same with Ventarbre and again, Cielmer, Gustave's side loses a bit of steam by the time you get Johan I guess, the timeskips are too long sometimes. It's a shame since his early part of the story is very good, better than Wil I'd say and I prefer Wil to Gustave.
