If you mean in today's world in terms of retro game hunting, it's because resellers and retailers associate old Nintendo games as being premium and thus are able to get away with jacking up their prices regardless of actual value and rarity. In some cases a game's status can also affect the value, Earthbound isn't super fucking rare to justify a $200+ price tag but the massive fanbase that surrounds it has caused it to become so expensive. It makes it harder for people to actually justify dropping the cash on filling out their Nintendo libraries, especially considering the condition and extraneous items for the game if you're trying to go for CiB.
Somewhat related, this is the current day mean Buy It Now value for a Nintendo 64 with hookups only. You can thank Gamestop for charging $80USD for the same shit but wihtout a first party controller.

They're not. At all. The only cheap Genesis games are the sports shit, certain mediocre licensed platformer garbage, Sonic 1 and 2, and the really common stuff like Aladdin and Mortal Kombat. I hate this misconception. If people put aside their globalization for a moment they will notice that winners for that generation were per-region, not global. And the Genesis won in the West. SNES won in Japan (and won in Japan so hard it skewed the global total in the SNES' favor).

I was just poor and I chose the Genesis over the SNES. I barely had any games but I had a family member who had both consoles and everything for it. I barely gave a fuck about SNES games even when I was over at his house and had the chance to play from a great library. He had Sega Channel and I was always excited to see what was on it each month.

Now that I've grown up and I'm trying to get all the consoles and everdrives for them I'm starting with SNES. I started playing more SNES stuff with emulation over the last few years and enjoying it. I'll eventually turn my attention to the Genesis stuff I never got to play too and also start to dabble in NES. I started playing NES games when I was like 2 years old, we had a huge collection of those at that time. I barely remember most of them though.
