Holy damn is this game fun. Hard like the original but with a much higher level of fairness. And it's the best looking nes game I've ever seen. Better than Mario 3 even.

How did you guys like it?
Can I expect this level of quality in later games?

Playing jp version for better sound btw

I still personally prefer the original since I find the level design a lot tighter in that one. The early levels are utterly fantastic but I think there's a drop of quality in the final few stages which kind of brings it down for me.

It IS gorgeous though and having multiple characters on hand is a fantastic idea that I wish was brought back for later games.

The NES version is a different game due to the fact the difficulty is greatly increased. Enemy damage is increased where even the smallest enemies will end you quickly. The second loop is insane and I recommend trying to get through it at least once since it's probably the hardest thing in the series to do, yet alone one of the hardest accomplishments on the NES library.

I think the production level stays on about par for the rest of the games after 3. 4, Dracula x (Rondo and the SNES game), Bloodlines, Belmont's Revenge, and Rebirth are all fantastic and should be experienced if you're enjoying the early games. I just wish we'd gotten that Dracula X Chronicles style remake for 3 Iga wanted to do.

I also think highly of the "Metroidvania" games as well, but, understand they're a much different breed of game than the original style of the games. Symphony is where you'd want to start and just follow along from there just keep in mind they're a much different beast.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the series, it's honestly my favorite series of all time. If you have any questions I'll be glad to answer when I can.

JP version is easier and much more enjoyable anyway. Playing as Grant might seem a bit cheap, but goddamn if it doesn't make the game a whole lot better.

Controls feel less stiff, not many sections where you get bumped into a pit, bosses based around combat strategy more than memorization/holy water spam

They had a very expensive MMC5 chip in that cart that greatly expanded what the NES was normally capable of. In the early days of emulation this game never worked right for that reason.

This was nintendo's attempt as a stopgap to compete with the emerging 16 bit consoles as their SNES would not be ready until later that year (and the following year in America).

This is why it is a better than average NES game, but that came with a higher cost to manufacture.

This game is like twice as hard as the first one

How to pass level with all the stairs and bone towers because I'm getting my asshole reamed with fireballs

It's like I'm playing a shmup but the only movement option I have is Castlevania stairs
