Maybe I'm just a casual but this game seems like a sort of hidden gem. Playing the first right now.

It's very JRPG-like but essentially a TRPG/SRPG during combat. Relatively rich set of characters, items, enemies, and a mediocre spellcasting system. Many hours of gameplay. The amount of grinding required to make future battles fairly easy to win is relatively mild. Pretty neat villains as well as heroes.

It could certainly improve in a lot of areas, adding more content. There's no such thing as armor, for instance; only weapons (and a few rings). The king of every continent looks exactly the same. Dialogue is pretty underwhelming at parts (though I heard the English translation is crap). And nearly no in-game information is given about the effects of spells, items, etc. (it probably originally came with a manual that one was supposed to read).

My only outright annoyances with the game are: 1. how often I have to watch the camera pan around during the enemy's turn, focusing on a dozen different enemy units that just skip their turn without doing anything anyway (as they wait for me to approach), and 2. checking the stats of characters, how they're affected by different items, etc. is extremely tedious as the menu system is rather primitive.

Any fans of this series? In-depth information seems relatively scarce on the web. Like none of the guides I've read / skimmed through seemed to mention that Knight type of characters can easily switch between lance and spear mid-battle without wasting a turn, so you can decide whether you want to attack close-up with a more powerful weapon, or attack from one square afar with the slightly weaker spear. Just occurred to me that I can do this while in the 7th chapter already, LOL.

Unfortunate that I can't do it once I've equipped a character with the Devil Lance though, as it's cursed and can't be removed without going to town.

You are casual, anybody who knows about Sega knows about Shining Force because it's one of the most note-worthy RPG series attached to it, with Shining Force II being one of the best games on the console.

Fire Emblem is much tighter in terms of powerlevels, more lethal, and has permadeath. They're the same genre but radically different games.

I have played through a few SF titles, but like you said, it's a slog. This unfortunately tends to be true of many tactical RPGs, like FF Tactics.

If you haven't played SF2 yet, you may be surprised as how much is improved. Although the art direction takes a more colorful and childish approach, the game play is a lot richer. For starters, you have multiple class upgrade tiers instead of just one promotion per character, and there's actually a selectable difficulty setting on the title screen.

Sword of Hajya for the Game Gear (also an enhanced port on Sega CD) was also pretty enjoyable, but the game is a more watered down version of the SF engine. (e.g. no explorable towns)

Yeah I figure anyone who knows a thing or two about MegaDrive/Genesis is likely to know about this game, as it's got quite some quality. I literally didn't know what MegaDrive/Genesis was until a few days ago when I dug up some memories of having played that one neat RPG on some shitty emulated games bundle on PC, ~10 years ago, when I was about 10 years old, then asking around to find out that the game I played was Shining Force II.

It's quite funny. For the past ten years I've had a stagnant memory of having played "that one game" (SF2), without knowing its name, what platform it's for, etc. I had only played it once or twice too because I literally couldn't figure out how to save the game (I think the emulator was broken actually), and it was just one of some 50 emulated console games on this odd CD I got by trading with a friend, on which there was also fucking Pac Man 2, Scooby Doo Mystery and other crappy games.

It's a really weird kind of nostalgia.

Not a hidden gem at all, was huge. Played all of the Shining entries multiple times.

Shining force was the reason I couldn't play Final Fantasty Tactics. Played tactics for about 30 minutes and was like "fuck this shining force rip off".

Dark Wizard was good too- if you have a Sega CD.

No guides required just experiment. The game are all pretty easy from what I remember.

Doesn't seem to be much of a hidden gem on /vr/ bug Shining Force/SF2 are indeed wonderful games. I still have mad love for some of the characters in those games:

>Zylo
>Slade
>Guntz

in SF1 pic related was insanely awesome. i don't understand why his second attack animation was so much worse than the first

Never played Shining in the Darkness (i'm a pleb who can't do first-person dungeon crawling w/out an automap) but that game looked extra-cozy

I don't think this is unusual at all for someone born in the early 90s or later, who mostly grew up on PC games. The only console series that "everyone" know of are those of Nintendo (incl. the handheld ones) and those of Sony, correct me if I'm wrong. Well, and ancient arcade machines like the ones on which games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were originally played on. Don't even know who manufactures those.

That's pretty fucking uncommon. The genesis held it's popularity on the playground, so to speak, long after it's prime. And who hasn't heard of Sonic?

>I made a thread on /v/ to figure out what "that one game" I played back then was, and it was determined to be SF2. Maybe another casual gamer anon saw that thread, began playing the series, and also didn't realize it was popular among retro folks.

Well we talk about it pretty often around here.

I admit, my view of what's "popular" has been skewed by years and years of being balls deep in this hobby to the point where I have the tendency to be like "YOU CALL THIS GAME OBSCURE? I HEARD SOMEONE MENTION IT ONE TIME YOU FUCKING CASUAL"

But seriously SF is among the more popular games on the Genesis

>> No.3663295

>>3663218
>And who hasn't heard of Sonic?
Everybody knows of Sonic because that franchise is everywhere by now. There even was a cartoon of it when I was a kid, and my currently 12 year old brother played "Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing" on his Xbox 360 about two years ago.

It's not that I've never heard of the brand "Sega", but I'd bet money on that 95%+ of people aged 25 or younger have never heard of the Genesis/MegaDrive platform.

I still could be totally wrong. I've grown up in Turkey, learning about console games from my German cousins and through the late 90s / early 00s Internet, mostly just emulating (we once owned a Game Boy Pocket tho) and lived in Germany in the past decade. Maybe it's different in the USA. But for me, SNES, N64, Game Boy, and the PS series are totally "duh" whereas Genesis/MegaDrive is, well, as I said I literally didn't know about that platform until a couple days ago so it seems quite obscure to me.

>> No.3663298

That explains it. In the USA to have been born in 1990 or so and not have ever heard of the Genesis would have to have meant you lived in some backwater Mormon cult or something

It's pretty well known - the problem is that since it's no longer unique you have to compare it against the other games of its kind and it really kind of comes up short, even compared to the SRPGs that were out at the time. Honestly I feel that even Langrisser 1/Warsong was more fun and interesting and that game's older than SF1.

If Shining Force had permadeath then it'd be harder than Fire Emblem to the extent of being stupidly cheap in some battles. Individual encounters were balanced knowing the player could just revive fallen allies and there was no real penalty for losing a battle besides having to try again.

I did a playthrough recently where I finally levelled everyone to 20 before promotion and Arthur still came out like ass. His stats immediately after promotion were insane, but his level-ups were all terrible. Zylo, on the other hand, ended up staying one of the best characters until the end, aside from that weird wolf-claw magic mud fling attack animation. Also, the rumored difference between Hans and Diane was negligible at best and Lyle is still superior to both.

Of course there's RNG involved with level-ups, but I was very disappointed because I had high hopes for the marinara knight. Guntz, on the other hand, surprised the hell out of me with his abilities.
