When a lot of people talk about great games for the Turbografx, more often than not they list off Turbo CD titles (Castlevania Rondo of Blood, Ys Book 1 and 2, Gates of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, etc.) rather than games that were released for Hu-Cards.

What were great games for just the regular Turbografx/PC-Engine that are worth picking up to this day?

I loved Blazing Lazers back in the day, great shooter. So is Ordyne, Psychosis and Magical Chase. (MC is retarded expensive now tho)

Military Madness is a good (somewhat simple but fun) turn based strategy.

Alien Crush and Devil's Crush are pretty good pinball sims.

Oh and Bomberman if you've got some friends to play with.

>So what is the best shmup for the regular PC-Engine/Turbografx overall?

Of course that's a matter of opinion, but I really enjoyed Super Star Soldier and Final Soldier. Final Soldier feels very casual in comparison, but the stage design was really nice

There's also a nice port of the original arcade Gradius. If I'm not mistaken, I think that version included an exclusive bonus stage, too.

I want to say Super Star Soldier, but the game bullshits you too much by making you restart at an earlier part of the stage whenever you lose a ship. Boss fights are especially ridiculous.

Final Soldier has probably the best stage design out of the entire series, but the difficulty is too much on the casual side. Maybe if you played it on the hardest setting.

I wish it were easier to find information like this. Ghouls n Ghosts seems like a 100% straight port, unfortunately with limited credits. Shinobi apparently cut the whole second level out (of an already short game). I didn't know about R-Type because I can't get that far :(

It's definitely up there. As mentioned it has impressive graphics as it keeps throwing new things at you, and you are seeing new sprites/tiles all the time. Its music is catchy and it has a few spoken voices which are pretty good considering it's coming from just the Hu-Card (and these sampled voices impressed me back then). On the normal setting, the game will feel easy, as it carries you along, you go from wondering how you could ever die, then as you progress suddenly towards the last couple stages it actually shows what it can really throw at you. The game is not a bullet hell danmaku game, but features just the joy of moving around destroying everything, which is less common these days. It is paced very well to give a very enjoyable experience. I wish I could get the TurboChip, but that is way beyond my means, so I settle for the collection on PSP UMD and digitally from PSN to play on PS3. I did muster up enough during the Thanksgiving holiday to purchase a Turbo Everdrive (it is the cheapest krikizz offers) and you can bet I'll be enjoying Soldier Blade (Coryoon and Magical Chase).

>>3663259
I think the HuCard library is pretty strong, but that's the beauty of the system, if one adds CD-ROM, Super CD-ROM, and/or Arcade CD-ROM games, the library becomes outstanding. Of the TurboChips (my Duo and TurboExpress are not modded to play import HuCards), I was pretty happy with as they have helped me through a long road trip, that is some decent strength to me, all that limits me now from enjoying more is funds, I hate being poor.

CD platform was great for RPGs and shooters, but was total ass in regards to arcade ports or platformers

Rondo was the only really good CD platformer. Possibly the best on the whole system, although both new adventure island and Bonk 2 are also in that legendary tier. Chiki chiki boys and valis I were decent CD games I guess

Also a big lack of Taito and Namco games on the CD platform

CD was quality over quantity. You have Rondo, Ys, Xanadu, GoT, LoT, River City Ransom, Spriggan, and not a whole lot else, other than a ton of RPGs that are unplayable unless you know Japanese. People always name the same usual suspects like the n64

That's the problem with me. I can rank things as they are all excellent to me. Also there's so much I have not played which are excellent. Also it is not hard for me to enjoy a game, all I expect is when I push a button, shit happens, and I will be entertained.

On HuCard I've had great memories of Splatterhouse, Ninja Spirit, Air Zonk, Soldier Blade, Military Madness, Blazing Lazers, Legenday Axe, Bomberman '94, Alien & Devil's Crush, pretty much all the usual suspects ... I can't wait to get in the Turbo Everdrive because I tried Coryoon and Magical Chase on emulation and I absolutely love them. I have a soft spot for Aldynes which was so desirable to me back in the late 90s and to find it plays great also makes it stand out to me. (I also realize I forgot to get the Star Soldier Collection out for the pic, which is excellent).

On CD, it is overloaded with stuff I love like the Ys games (I still wish the PCE 4 was the canon one), Cotton, Spriggan, Cosmic Fantasy 2 (just for love at first sight of Cadette Babbette/Rimu), Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire, Syphia, Gate & Winds of Thunder, Rondo, Frey, Popful Mail, and I forgot the ninja game I played but never owned, there's just too much that I do enjoy (I even like the strip mahjong games, and adventure games). So you see it is too difficult for me to rank anything, I am also probably forgetting a lot too since this is off the top of my head.

Almost every system I can find a game I like for various reasons. My friends know me to enjoy crap games, so now you understand my dilemma. (Also Chrono Trigger is one of my most favorite games, but it is not on a PCE HuCard to my knowledge, did someone make a homebrew I am unaware of, because I'd love the ROM once I get in the Turbo Everdrive)
