The great debate.

Which one?

>> No.365208

Link to the Past

Also, didn't understand the title of it. I know it was originally called Triforce of the Gods in Japan, but what's up with the American title? I suppose it's sort of a pun on Link's name, but how is there a link to the past?

>> No.365205

Link's Awakening.

While many people hype up ALttP as the greatest game ever made, it just feels like a bore to me for the most part. And this is from a guy who's beat it a couple times.

ALTTP because graphics, it was the first one I ever played, music is great and gives me the feels

Maybe because it sorta fucking CREATED all of those cornerstones of what the series is like.

LA > LttP
I've played both though, LttP is a solid 8.5/10 but I just felt a lot of the themeing felt bland, you know... Like yeah, got your desert... forest... generic village.... etc.
It's still tons of fun, and dat Dark World too
Link's Awakening was my first Zelda game.

>> No.365247

Please, this is the one discussion that turns /vr/ most into /v/

This.

I played Lttp much later and was disappointed. Theres only one town, mostly devoid of life or character. The dungeons felt boring, and the overworld was just a cheap way to double the size of the map.

>> No.365314

LttP has too many fucking dungeons, and the dungeon designs aren't that cool. I recall the third dungeon of the dark world and you didn't even need to go through it at all, just fall in a hole, get the big key, fall into another one to get the weapon and go kill the boss. maybe it has to do with the engine and the one screen per area deal. it definitely made each place feel unique, you can remember tons of single areas/rooms from that game easily if you've played it a decent amount

go ahead, try it. you know the exact configuration of the room with the heart piece surrounded by holes near the witch's shack, don't you? can't you just see it? what area in lttp do you know that well?

Any thread where people want 'the best' or 'only one' answer turns into /v/ after awhile.

I cannot really choose between the two. LttP felt much larger, not because of light/dark world, but the areas you explored and dungeons felt much bigger and less confined than LA. However, Link in LA moved much smoother and the story/interaction with the world felt deeper than LttP.

Both are strong games, it's really pointless to choose one as 'the better'.

Oracle of Ages and Seasons were the best handheld Zelda games, hands down.

>> No.365616

>>365185
Like its predecessors, A Link to the Past introduced elements that became mainstream for the Zelda franchise, including:
The Master Sword. Games like Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess featured it with a similar function and purpose as in the SNES game.
The dungeons became more thematically distinctive, reflecting different architectures and purposes. Dungeons based on forest, water and ice, for instance, are played for the first time here.
This is the first game where Pieces of Heart are shown, leading to more sidequests (assuming they existed at all in the NES titles).
A Link to the Past was the first game in the series to use the now standardized Zelda logo in American releases. Japan would later use this standardized logo by the release of Ocarina of Time.
This game introduces the Cucco Revenge Squad, where a flock of Cuccos will attack Link if he attacks one continuously.
Kakariko Village and Lake Hylia debut in this title.
This is the first Zelda game where a member of Link's family is shown. The only other games that do this are The Wind Waker and The Minish Cap.
The notion of Link freeing maidens from crystal prisons was reused with Princess Zelda in Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword, and with Din in Oracle of Seasons.

>> No.365631

>>365616
While not as influential to the overall structure of Zelda games as The Legend of Zelda or A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening introduced a number of elements that recur in later Zelda games, including:

The use of a location other than Hyrule as a setting.
A list of songs playable on the game's instrument that must be learned and have different functions, although unlike in Ocarina of Time and some later games the songs simply play when selected, rather than having to be played note by note.
The first occurrence of fishing.
Unique background music for each dungeon rather than reusing the same single theme or few themes, as its predecessors did. Most games after Link's Awakening follow its lead in this respect.
The first trading sequence in the series.
The first clear example of a lava- or fire-themed dungeon in the series, with Turtle Rock.
The Roc's Feather.
An Owl who periodically meets Link and gives him advice on where to go or what to do next.
A set of well-hidden collectible items that have no use by themselves but can be redeemed at a certain location to receive useful items. (Secret Seashells in Link's Awakening, with Gold Skulltulas and Poe Souls as examples of successors.)

LA was fine and fun, but ALttP made more substantial contributions to the series as a whole.

Still my favorite. Had the tightest controls of any Zelda game to date. Multiple kills and knockback/kill combos were easy to pull off once you got good, and you could sometimes even get Link to basically stab in two directions at once by turning just as you stabbed while in a tight spot. No other game in the series has such lightning-quick response time on screen.

LoZ is like a pair of old slippers to me. I replay it about once a year. I don't want to argue about which one's the best, but it's still my personal favorite.

>> No.366404

There's a big difference between saying a game is a favorite and saying a game is the best in a series. I mean, I had a shitload of fun with LoZ and I never played it as a kid. But you can't deny that in the dungeons at least almost every "puzzle" consists of just placing bombs everywhere and checking which blocks are hidden switches. Although the combat has its appeal due to its high skill ceiling and its challenge. Other than that the game feels like a prototype for ALttP and LA.
