What are the differences between Genesis models exactly, besides form factor? Which ones are you supposed to stay away from?

I found a working Model 2 at Value Village for $9. Should I keep it and get a flashcart, or just resell it and look for a different model?

Sound.

In terms of sound quality, it's like an inverse bell curve. Early Model 1s are best, Late Model 1s and Early Models 2 are worst, Late Models 2s are decent.

In terms of composite quality, it generally gets better the newer they are, a straight linear curve of improvement although you can occasionally get later models with shitty Samsung video encoders. Late Sony encoders are best, Fujitsu encoders are decent, Early Sony encoders are decent to mediocre, and Samsung encoders are horseshit.

Does the underside have a 3/4 length RF shield? That's good.

Does it have the cut-outs arrowed? That's best.

This is a comprehensive list of differences between all of the different genesis hardware and the pros and cons for each one. The differences lie in license verification (TMSS), video quality, and audio quality.

Shit. It's a V1/V1.8.

Ouch.

That said it can be modded...if you're a bad enough dude. Might be better to look out for a VA4 though. I've got 5 of the buggers and they're not hard to spot thanks to the external clues.

It's junk.
You can pay 25 dollars for a good one on Ebay. Don't waste 9.

Are the Genesis 3 and the Nomad the only ones not compatible with the Sega CD?

If you check that thread in an earlier post there's an easy fix for the audio that just involved desoldering a few of the sound amps off the board. There's also a 1 cap fix for the jailbars.

Figured I'd post here since I've been sitting on this genesis for a while and have been wondering what it's specific mobo revision is plus how big a deal it is that it's not a HDG model.
Judging from the input slots on the back of the chassis and what I've read online the motherboard is likely a VA6.5 or a VA6.8, and from there I've been unable to find information that differentiates the two. Lastly, I've read a lot of shit that only the non-TMSS HDG models are worth using for the sound but then I also read that all model 1's are fine as long as the mobo isn't a VA7.

>>3663574
No, there's not much difference between VA0-VA6.8 beyond the TMSS.

People will mention shit like the sound being 0.01% different, but that's attributable to the electrolytic caps ageing, and is different on a machine to machine basis (and besides, the reference model is the VA0, not the later ones).

dont believe anything that these people trying to tell you, most of it is second hand knowledge, but in general you want to get a model 1 without jailbars

Listen you Genny faggots. THIS is the VA7, the worst revision of the model 1. It's basically an early model 2 Genesis on a model 1 shell.

2 ways to quickly spot it's a VA7 is saying 'VA7' right there on the board and having 2 small chips rather than one giant CPU chip near the cartridge slot.

Funny how in this revision the Z80 is way bigger than the 68k

I don't even consider the Genesis 3 to be a real Genesis. It was a licensed, low-budget Majesco reproduction. Sega didn't even make it.

And look at the last few pages of that thread. A user named Eep386 came up with both mods. I've personally done his sound amp mod on my va1.8 and noticed that the bass isn't chirpy anymore and I can hear the different instruments a little better. It's worth doing in my opinion.
