MK2 definitely had the best feel and atmosphere. I think UMK3 is a better game, but the feeling was definitely shot after they introduced more urban environments.

My specialty with Shang was to morph into Sub Zero just before winning. Then start his freeze fatality but instead of finishing it with the uppercut I would morph into Scorpion and do his toasty on them. There's just barely enough time to do it and looks awesome.

MK2 was my favorite of the classics, MK3's combo system always felt kind of weird and the run button was a good idea but not implemented super well. MK9 is my favorite game overall.

Nah not yet. MK9 kind of wrapped up what I was looking for from the series and then Injustice turned out to be one of my favorite fighters ever so I was still rocking Wonder Woman when MKX came along.

And the game design for it looks cool but I'm a little over the MK aesthetic so it didn't grab me as much. And now KoFXIV is out and that's gone back to competing with other fighters. I'll probably get MKX sometime when it's cheap but in no rush.

One quick tip - mk2/mk3 have extremely low volume by default. If you're going to set it up, have a keyboard handy and hit F2 to get into the game setup and adjust volume there.

That part is true but it's not what he said. Not only microtransaction games are casual. MK is the original casual fighting game. My fucking mom played MK in the 90's and could do Mileena's man eater fatality when she won.

That doesn't make it bad, I've always liked MK better than Street Fighter, including MK9 over SFIV, but there's no arguing that it's objectively an inferior game. Even the playtesters who did the Mortal Kombat 9 podcast were sick of how broken it was by the end.

That doesn't make it bad for casual play and it doesn't make it bad that it's casual. Smash is the exact same and that's why it's so popular. Pick up and play is great, but saying it's secretly better than a serious fighting game is ridiculous.

The problem with SFV is the same problem with vanilla SF2, Alpha1, SF3NG and vanilla SFIV. They always cock it up the first few times and then usually refine till it's among the best around.

I think it's a lame series with mostly stupid characters, but there's no denying it's quality. And it's obviously as popular as it is with good reason.

I love these moments. They're like meeting some undocumented tribe for the first time.

MKII was commonly considered to be the height of the series for many years. The only game to really surpass it in terms of popularity was MK9, and that game was mostly based on the story of MK2 anyhow. It's deadly hard as a game though, ludicrously so even, and it's pretty simplistic compared to most other fighting games of the era in terms of gameplay, but as an experience it's still very enjoyable.

Street Fighter has more traditional balance where they tried to make the characters all roughly as good as one another, but they also have very different playstyles. So it's not just learning new moves, it's learning new moves and how to play rushdown or tutle etc. You need to know your character and your opponent in and out to know how to fight them in a way you don't really have to in MK.

They're just different, for different audiences.

Xmen vs SF had an infinite attack for everybody except maybe Zangief (who didn't need them cause his FAB did 50% damage).

X-men COTA has a 2-attack infinite for Iceman.

MvsC1 had a 2-attack corner infinite with Gambit. If you could reset the hunter series with Jin in a corner combo, you could then do his c.LP -> c.HP with no knockback.

Dive kick is a joke game. It was briefly popular with the casual fighting games crowd because it makes for a fun party game and forces you to learn basic footsies which most casuals ignore. It's not a serious fighting game by any measure though.
