Not retro, but I don't think anything beats the bad ending from Disgaea 2. The hero accidentally kills his girlfriend, and the grief makes him sponge up her overlord powers, which makes him go berserk and he EATS his little brother and sister. They don't show it, but the voice track is as graphic as it can be.

all this time I thought the name of the dks 2 protagonist was only ryuunosuke in the saturn version and the anime, while the original name was "jo", but coincidentally I redownloaded a clean version of the game recently and see now that his actual name is in fact ryuunosuke

which means the uploader's name was probably "joe" and he just didnt bother with deleting his save files, which explains why two endings were unlocked from the start. I spent over 30 hours finishing this game with another man's name

Fucked around in photoshop for a bit and I think I might have confirmed my suspicions.
I took the artbook version of this CG (https://hitomi.la/reader/283321.html#20)), downscaled it, then converted it to grayscale and reduced the colors to a very small number and what I got in the end looks suspiciously similar to the original(even despite the shitty quality of the scan).

Might just be, especially if they were handed down a lineart version only they could shit perfectly anti aliased plots in a very simple automated process. It wouldn't be a perfect process, a lot of cleanup to do I imagine but it's a starting point.

>> No.3651638

They probably scanned the artwork in grayscale or whatever, then colored it in and added things like dithering gradients (There was this PC-98 art tool I found that generates dithering gradient patterns between 3 colors of your choice, incidentally).

Considering the non-Yu-No efforts (Eve and now Desire) seem to be just "the original game with Remastered CGs", they might as well do them all since I can't imagine that would take much time.

Except DK4 because you run into the problem of "which version should I adapt?"

>Except DK4 because you run into the problem of "which version should I adapt?"
You won't get the right to the extra content from the SFC or PS1 version that easily. No real point in basing it on the PC-FX port either.
The Windows game already had remade CG so a remaster won't bring much of an improvement to that.
That leaves you with the original PC98 game which could have used some improvements in the combat interface.

And add a Nereid+Eto scene while you're at it.

Eve's more like reused assets from the 2003 remake with redrawn Saturn (and PC-98, in the case of the adult CGs) art slapped on it, and really amateurish tweening to replace the Saturn cutscenes, if they're not kept as is(The QoL additions are nice, though.).

Hopefully Desire will be more professional and less budget.

Not the other guy but as far as eroge goes Yu-No has been the only one I liked thus far, and I'm quite limited in my choices as I don't possess the moonrunes decryption trait.

I played Desire and Nocturnal Illusion and was quite disappointed that the story seem tacked on as an excuse to just drive the titty. I also tried Divi-Dead but eventually the story just failed to grab me and I lost interest.

Yu-No on the other hand quite resembled the style of Japanese adventure games I'm more prone to enjoy like Snatcher or Shenmue, so I was quite enjoying the experience, and the sex stuff didn't seem tacked on at all and seemed to be handled for the most part with a moderate amount of class (with some very notable exceptions that quite bothered me). But all in all I quite liked Yu-No and hold it in high regard, it feels more like a classic adventure game stuck in an eroge formula.

Not to say I don't have a lot grievances about the game, but overall it was a positive experience, and in the right moments the game is able to pull off magnificent atmosphere.

I understand you don't remember the details but I would be curious if in a more general tone you could articulate what bothered you about the game, just for curiosity's sake. Again I might agree with you on some bits, because I also have my fair share of grievances with the game.

Perhaps the track that plays at the very beginning of the game during the dialogue on the rooftop and some times after was very good at being atmospheric, but that's it. For what it's worth, I didn't care for Umemoto's work in Akai Katana either, I can name a dozen of Japanaese game composers whose work I prefer to his at the top off my head.

So basically you wanted a dating sim and didn't get that?

Soundtracks should be atmospheric and that's what makes yu-no's great and the cg was amazing.

The protagonist was a jerk and that's what made him shit, I agree there. I doubt any other elf protag is any better if he's modeled after them.

The epilogue is not nearly that bad. Tell me a mistery vn that gave more satisfying answers to anything? Misteries usually come packed with asspull resolutions, specially in vns.

None of that is enough to bring the atmosphere this game achieves down.
All that new age pseudo scientific shit only made it better.

>> No.3658357

>The epilogue is not nearly that bad.
As someone that loves Yu-No, and as you say achieves great heights in portraying an excellent atmosphere, the epilogue does its best to undo the atmosphere from the rest of the game, which was all enshrined in mystery. So that mystery is completely taken away. Not that I'm saying that the epilogue retroactively makes the positive experience you have with rest of the game null, but it does completely dispel the mysticism that was very subtly told in the story. And does it so in a very info-dumpy kind of way that didn't even drive the narrative forward, it seemed they were just trying to explain things for the sake of explaining, and didn't really take into account creating a good narrative around it. I'm not a writer so I'm not sure what would be the proper mechanism to try and explain some of that folklore that served as a backbone for the rest of the story, but I do believe they did it in a very hamfisted way that clashed heavily with the rest of the game. Not ony in narrative terms but in tone as well, it felt like we were playing a completely different game by a completely different team, and some people theorized that the epilogue was rushed out the door by time constraints of the development cycle, which in my view explains a lot.

tl;dr as good as Yu-No is I don't think it's very controversial to say the epilogue was a mess

Here it is in .ogg format, since I doubt you have time to fiddle with the game files to get the original out.

I played Snatcher for the first time recently. I always loved point-and-click games, so I enjoyed it thoroughly - I'd say it's now my favourite Kojima title.

Obviously Snatcher was entry-level easy mode for a VN-type game because it's very linear, available in multiple formats, and in English. Considering the majority of the art OP's been posting has given me multiple orgasms skimming through this thread, what machines will I need to play these games and is it worth getting back into studying Japanese to do so?

If you want PC98 graphics you best stick to PC98, Towns, X68000 and IBM/DOS.
Some Windows ports keep the original graphics but many others filtered them and a few took the effort to recolor/redraw everything.

Learning Japanese is most definitely worth it. There's thousands of these games and only a handful get questionable translations. They're intended for a mature audience so they're more difficult for Japanese learners than console games.

What do you guys think about this? It should be pretty amazing if you're seeing it for the first time.

For me the most interesting thing is the juxtaposition of modern graphical capability with retro game design sensibilities. If Lost Woods was completely reimagined from scratch today, it would be virtually unrecognizable. It would probably resemble an actual vast forest wherein getting lost is easy.

And you can say what you will about that, but personally I feel that is overall worse because it inherently prioritizes immersion over gameplay - the reverse of what OoT's Lost Woods actually does. And in a broader sense, and by extension, I find that sentiment applicable to all modern game design theory in general.

Look at what you're seeing here: it is fundamentally a puzzle maze, which looks nothing like anything which might conceivably occur in nature. It is an approximation of an idea - a meandering forest maze, a classic retro game design trope - whose greatness as a game mechanic is directly linked to the fact that it is just that: an approximation.

Hardware limitations and retro design theory, and players expectations which were once rather different than they are today, naturally enhanced the gameplay by forcing devs to put it, first, because they didn't have the luxury of falling back on flashy graphics and story sequences to pacify their audiences between the actually engaging pieces of content.

This video perfectly illustrates the charm that has been lost to the ages. The realistic graphics highlight the strangeness of the surrounding environment, which was perhaps less noticeable back in the day when the graphics were also similarly unrealistic.
