Sure, if that's not the case, then trial and error is acceptable, especially with short iteration times, or if it's a way to solve a puzzle you don't get as a last resort thing, but often trial and error is just padding to make game artificially longer.

Trial and error usually wasn't fun or engaging back then, and isn't fun still.

It's much more hipster to act as if every decision ever made by a dev is automatically masterful and GOAT just because game was made before 1999. Games had flaws back then! And some of them sucked! Shocking, I know.

It has a whole bunch of terrible mechanics (extremely limited inventory space, having pictures taken every two seconds, PP-stealing, obnoxious status ailments, rolling HP values, having your dad ring you up continuously, areas where you're forced to take damage, silly teleports, 1/128 chance items, having to withdraw cash from an ATM, enemies which are guaranteed to deal damage upon death) which make it "quirky";, stylised but in actuality extremely impractical. It's no surprise why hipsters love it so much.

It's charming as a game, sure, but that's all it has going for it. On a fundamental level it's actually pretty awful, but the shallowness is why so many hipsters like it; they're very shallow people.

I think the "hipster" thing is overused and progressively losing meaning, but I've met a good amount of people who fit the "hipster gamer" stereotype. Mostly I think the type is attracted to two main things: "obscure" games and "quirky" games.

"Obscure" games are relative to other games, the hipster type usually doesn't give a shit about games that are "actually" obscure. Take a popular series/company and the hipster type will usually praise the black sheep (Majora's Mask is a classic example) and be unusually uninterested in the most popular games. This makes them seem "different" but also pass off as knowledgeable.

"Quirky" games are pretty self-explanatory. Earthbound is the embodiment of this fetish, but I'd include nearly any "strange" Japanese game (Katamari, Parodius, LSD Dream Emulator, etc.). Besides the obvious ironic and "weird" aspect, there's also the "deeper" idea that the very idea of video games are weird and shouldn't be taken too serious.

I don't really see anything wrong with liking or agreeing with any of that. But it does bug me when I meet someone who namedrops those kinds of games but doesn't really know or give a shit about anything else. I'm probably just the ultimate hipster.

Gameplay wise, it's not a good RPG, but that takes the back seat to the fact it's an enjoyable RPG. Sometimes gameplay takes a back seat because the overall experience is enjoyable.
