What ps1 games aged particularly well?

I am not talking about visuals, it's the content and the variety of the shit that game has to offer that i am looking for.

Squaresoft RPGs for sure. They're even better in hindsight considering how progressively worse Square (now Squareenix) has gotten since those times. The PS1 really was their apex.

Might be biased but 90s jRPGs and their absolutely tenacious random encounter rates are not what I'd consider fine aged. Visually they are gorgeous but that's that.

There are exceptions such as FFIX, Grandia, Parasite Eve 1/2 and such but for the larger chunk it is what it is.

Then again, my experience is limited so if there are some particular standouts I am willing to listen if you can sell it to me.

Most Square RPGs of the time were highly experimental and didn't even have random encounters. Well, except Final Fantasy I guess.

Neither this or the one I posted before have random encounters.

Alright thanks, I will check if they work on my softmodded ps2. Hopefully they are fun in year 2016 for someone who is in his late 20s.

I played most of them way after their time. You'll be fine.

I did play Vagrant Story. Very interesting, complex enough, nice art style and atmosphere but it's execution did age. Call it autism and revert to offenses if you must but I can't see anyone sane sit down for an hour or two nowadays and endure that fucking menu navigation which is 80% of actual gameplay. Shame.

What do you consider a good not-dated game so I can have a reference?

>> No.3647038

>>3647029
Do you really think I'm hyperbolizing when I claim that Vagrant Story's gameplay (ie menu navigating) is very time consuming therefore obnoxious?

As far as jRPGs go I'd say FFIX is pretty fucking good for an example. Random encounters are there but there isn't any wild exploration where you dont have clear idea where to go rendering you walking in circles and triggering the same random encounter over and over. Its smooth, plays nice, looks nice. Core idea is that it doesn't make me feel like I'm wasting my time with it if it makes any sense. Either way it's a moot point since I played vagran story before but for the sake of the conversation.

Played this last year.

Yeah there are some odd gimmicks with using the right joystick to attack but it's still really fun.

Well that's kinda pedantic
I had fun with it so I'd consider it a good game but that's just my opinion.

Quality is subjective

>FFIX doesn't make me feel like i'm wasting my time

The grindy ability system, slow battle speeds, and large amount of cutscenes don't make you feel like you are wasting your time?

Playing FFIX on popstarter (basically running a ps1 iso file off my usb stick on the moded ps2). No load times senpai.

that doesn't fix the sluggist ATB or ability system though.

That being said, I heard the PC rerelease actually does have fixes for some of that stuff.

Was playing tomba 2 for first time. Pretty fun and different game.

Wipeout XL and 3 are still good, the formula is the same for all of the clones coming out since Sony Liverpool closed down.

Same for Rage Racer/R4. People also like to shit on Crash 2 and Spyro (mainly that one "poochie" fag) for being basic or whatever but the gameplay holds up well. The graphics of all these games are still good too. Plus the music for all these games is solid (even poochie fag can't deny Crash has great music).

I replayed Sheep Raider recently. Its a very unique puzzle platformer. Taking less than 3 seconds to respawn is nice because it feels like it doesn't punish you for dying and encourages exploration.

Ridge Racer Type 4 - still one kd my favorite racing games. Great aesthetic.

Valkyrie Profile - aged like a fine wine

Silent Hill - still scary

Time Crisis - still one of the best home light gun games ever

Vagrant Story - some may disagree with this

Xenogears - great story but gameplay is sort of aged

I could probably think of more

Love that game so much. First game I ever 100%ed. I'd say the only big weakness of the game was the voice acting.

I loved R4 but always found the lacking of a quick race option artificial and many times wished it had it. Also I had the RR1 remake cd but I cannot find it I may have lost it and that was very cool as well.

Crash Team Racing - I still prefer this old gem than the Mario Kart. It just feels so good once you get the hang of all boost techniques.

jRPG genre - as anons mentioned above, those were great times for those games. FF, Saga Frontier, Legend of Legaia, Chrono Cross and so on.

Many platformer games like Crash Bandicoot (1, 2, 3), Spyro the Dragon, Tomba, MediEvil, Hercules.

Some of my favourite tactics/strategy RPGs also were made for the first Playstation: FFT and Vandal Hearts 2.
