Do you play retro or current games more and why?

Extreme curiosity. I personally prefer old games but tend to play more new ones. Though after how bad ff xv is im seriously considering strictly playing retro.

Current. I've played every old game worth playing. Many are fun to play over and over again. But there is so much new stuff coming out all the time that even if one in a million is good I couldn't play them all. And new games usually take a lot longer

I play current fighting games, and retro everything else.

Single player games are mostly hot garbage nowadays, with very few exceptions.

Even plot based games aesthetics and writing are better in older games. I don't know why.

>> No.3643364

Early 2000s games aren't retro on this board so current.

>> No.3643467

Since I play a certain game competitively, current wins overwhelmingly by number of hours.
But if we measure by number of titles played, it's a pretty wide mix. I play whatever looks interesting on whatever system.

Retro by far. Modern games have too much time-wasting, non-gameplay crap for my liking. That, and theyre piss easy.

>> No.3643540

>>3643242
I prefer games from the early 2000s but also newer stuff.

I hate console-style FPS-games, i hate WoW-style combat-systems, i hate health regen, i hate empty open-world games, i hate modern RPG's.

Modern games i enjoy: CSGO, Minecraft, AOE2HD.

Other than that, give me some Baldurs Gate or Quake 1, braeh

Retro more. Newest console I own is a wii. I might get a PS4 tho.

>> No.3643543

>>3643295
This.

No heart or challenge in modern games, just grindy scammy handholding bullshit.

"Oh look we made this sweet 3d-engine"

"unfortunately were going to cover it with a bunch of useless UI-elements for retards that cant use the already implemented minimap"

Retro. New games are mired in /tv/story bullshit and bad controls and gameplay. There are just a small handful of games that have been released since 1995 that are even a little bit good, and that's sad.

Retro because emulating is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying new games. There are plenty of modern games I like though, you just have to wade through the psuedo-open world AAA trash.

More Retro. Except for some things like bf

Exactly. Even with a fun concept, you have to wait through or listen to sooo much story just to play the damn game

Retro. I don't usually invest in the market of modern day gaming since it tends to get costly and most modern day games tend to bore the shit out of me. My tastes in both modern and retro would probably give proof to that statement.

Another reason is because of how massive the libraries are of older consoles. I'm still finding games made over 20 years ago that are interesting and cool as fuck. Granted you can do the same with the likes of Steam or other indie developed titles (especially how lots of older games are being ported to Steam over time/ re-released in a collection or something), but the retro library has range that spreads on an international scale and you just can't find that anymore.

I play mostly retro but some modern games.

When it comes to retro i play the games i missed or the games i am too poor to buy or too lazy to set up my NES.

And when it comes to modern mostly just early 2000's games.

Depends on what I feel like, so both.
Just got the starcraft 2 trilogy yesterday as a deal and decided to replay starcraft 1 including the broodwar expansion.

It was nice to play the campaign and how they brought back old units in sc2

Retro

New games cost money and I need money. Also I typically can find something on a emulator or a download of some pc game that keeps me entertained. Only new console I own is a 3ds, everything else I have is sixth gen or older.

Also new games appeal to a larger, casual crowd. I get they need money but having my hand held is terrible. Even in something like kirby I have more freedom then in some ofvthe stuff today.

>>3645016
Yes it is. ~1995 was the start of games that had a "modern" sensibility to them -- style over substance as a deliberate design decision marketed to the gamers of the day that actually wanted such games.

It was the takeover of what used to be real gaming before 1995 or so by Sony and Nintendo (following Sony's lead) to pull new "gamers" into buying these so-called games to make more money and concentrate more on graphics and story, which are easy, instead of quality gameplay, which is hard.

>> No.3646102

Honestly I tend to go back and forth. For the most part I play modern stuff but sometimes I get "the itch" and want to play nothing but retro stuff. I'll spend about a week or so playing (binging) mostly older stuff. But usually I play more semi modern games with an occasional retro title thrown in the mix.

>> No.3646123

I have no interest in modern games. AAA shit is so manufactured now that it feels lifeless. There is no joy in downloading a game and missing out on box art, manuals, and physical media.

That's not to say that indie devs don't make great games, it's just that those are rare and hard to find. Shit like FTL, nethack, and Dwarf Fortress I find to be a lot of fun.

The only new game I'm looking forward to is Cyberpunk 2077.

Well I buy a cheap copy of Battlefield 1 to play with friends? Yes, but it's not a game I look forward to playing.
