Just stopping by to say that the Chaos Emeralds are not a MacGuffin. A MacGuffin serves NO PURPOSE other than a plot point. Rarely do you even visually see a MacGuffin. It's just there to serve as a goal.

The Chaos Emeralds were bonuses in the original, and plot points in the newer games that had purpose (an energy source).

Perfect example of a MacGuffin, whatever was in the briefcase in Pulp Fiction. It's a film term and rarely applies to video games as most things in video games have an effect on gameplay. The only thing I can really even start to say is a MacGuffin in games is Link's Triforce of Courage, but his goal is never to just get the triforce.

In the archie comics Eggman can power an entire metropolitan city by shoving furries into these underground ball things. Said balls drain the life of the furries, but they don't come out looking like shit.

I'm pretty sure the general idea is that the emeralds are part of Sonic's world, and that they hold everything together and keep chaotic energy in check maintain balance. Unleashed kinda points to that, with the emeralds restoring the planet back to it's original form and eradicating the evil forces Eggman let loose.

Or, if you like Sonic The Comic's explanation, they simply absorb evil/chaotic energy. Since chaos is bountiful in the universe, they're fucking loaded with energy, which is why the likes of Eggman wants them so badly.

Then of course there's Chaos Control, which is just harnessing the energy of the emeralds and bending it to the user's will. And the Master Emerald which is just a bigass chaos emerald that can veto the power of the emeralds if need be, and if in the right hands.

Bearing this in mind, to answer your question, they're all very closely related to chaos, so why not dub them after that fact? It also could have been named that by the echidnas after the whole Chaos debacle, perhaps as a warning to future civilizations to, you know, not fuck with them like they did.
