Konami and Square should have asked the dudes who made the bugfixed/retranslated ROMs for their versions. CVII becomes infinitely more playable when you actually know who's bullshitting you, and FFI is better when all the spells and stats actually fucking work.

Mappers are hardware on the cartridge itself that manage memory bank swaps and occasionally other things (some MMC5 variants have a scanline counter, for example) that need to be emulated just like the console hardware components.

But these people are stupid, it's trivial to emulate the MMC5 and Nintendo already has emulation code for it for the virtual console.

More likely, there was some ancient contractual clause floating around somewhere preventing Konami from physically distributing Castlevania III.

There isn't a chance in hell that Squenix would let the NES DW games on, not without adding all the new shit (accents, name changes, overflowing puns) they've slapped on the US DQ games.
