>Quake

This is neat. Never played it as a kid so this is my first time through it. It feels like Doom with a brown-ish color palette and medieval castle theme in full 3D. Spooky atmospheric music too.

>Quake 2

What the fuck happened. This feels like the most generic sci-fi shooter ever. Levels are totally linear.

Quake II was the beginning of the end for id. It was the game that started to blend them in with the rest of the gaming industry.
Fmv, gibbing less satisfactory, shitty metal soundtrack... to name a few things. Willits was the death nail of many things id but as a pure mapper he was very solid. Romero, despite being a bitchy diva, removed a lot of flavor from id's products.

p.s.: The Edge in multiplayer makes Quake II still worth it.

Why is Quake 2 so widely praised? Is it purely because of the multiplayer? I never played Quake 1 or 2 back in its heyday but playing them now Quake 1 seems so obviously superior to me. Shame about those shitty boss battles though.

Quake 2 was a technological revolution at the time. Being able to play against your friends in glorious 3D acceleration out of the box was a huge selling point back then.

Now that every damn game is 3D accelerated, it's main selling point is long since obsolete and all you have left is the gameplay, which doesn't hold up to the first two Dooms and the first Quake.

I agree - I think Brian Hook streamlined id's OpenGL endeavors.
The switching between software and OpenGL renderer was an awe moment when somebody had put in a, at the time, novel 3D accelerator. I remember running QuakeII on a PMMX 233 with a Voodoo2 and I was simply blown away because of it playing insanely smooth.

As a kid i remember being so disappointed that quake1 didn't have much of a story, or actual music, or boss battles. Then Quake2 came out and delivered everything i ever asked for in the least satisfying ways possible.

It's not a terrible game, It just felt like almost everything game-wise erred on the safe side. I feel like it set a trend for id that went all the way up to the latest Wolfenstien game. The technology would push ahead while the game stayed a step behind the present.

>> No.3637981

Quake 1 was strange. On one hand, the ability to look around 360deg in all directions was a first, and that was kind of cool. The dynamic lighting was basic but also interesting, and of course the multiplayer over the internet was amazing.

However, the design of the game with the entire color palette consisting of different shades of brown, green and gray was a total let down, as was the polygonal, boxy characters and blurry textures. I remember thinking how much better Doom looked, and Quake was supposedly next gen. Quake 2 was much better.. it's like someone told them they needed to add some colors and they did.

The level designs were actually somewhat innovative at the time, it's the same style that Half-Life later did way better. It's basically an early CoD style campaign.

Since Quake 1 still followed classic Doom style map design, it ironically aged better since that style has been out of favor since quite soon after Quake 1's release.

>> No.3639453

Quake 2 is a boring singleplayer game, but the mod scene at the time was incredible. QuakeC was a very limited language with a lot of shortcomings to how you could use it in the engine. For the sequel, id let modders use C, and everyone just went absolutely nuts with it.

Not only did you have really polished versions of original quake mods like Airquake 2, Rocket Arena 2 (ROCKET FUCKING ARENA 2!!!) and Threewave CTF, but you had a shitload of brand new stuff. Action Quake 2 was fucking amazing. ChaosDM just added ridiculous amounts of stuff to the mix. Jailbreak and Qpong and Weapons Factory and Freeze Tag and all the CTF variants -- it felt like we were getting new mods by the week.

On top of that there was a SHITLOAD of mappers, with some amazingly talented designers who were throwing out gorgeous and great playing levels as fast as you could play them. The work to make maps wasn't insane back then so you could have really prolific mappers put out dozens of levels. Of course there was also people uploading tons of character models and skins for you to use too.

If you were to judge Quake 2 by what came in the box, its pretty mediocre. Of course it doesn't hold up. But you have to understand, it had one of the greatest modding scenes and multiplayer communities of all time. Thats why oldfags like me have such fond memories of the game. I feel a little sad when I think about how its impossible for people to go back and experience Quake 2 like we all actually played it, and instead they're just stuck with this shitty orange and brown corridor slog. That wasn't my memory of the game -- I was waiting for my modem to finish dialing so I could play another goddamn round of Rocket Arena 2.
