Only Turrican I ever beat was the NES version. And also the fan-game "Hurrican".

What other ports should I look into? Should I start with the original one on the C64?

It wasn't ignored by Europe.

And that's the thing, when the American market was imploding, European gaming was as vibrant as ever with a fuckton of incredible games.

The only thing which cucked the micro computer gaming scene was the fact that they didn't have dedicated controllers. Every controller was 3rd party. And, in effect, gamers could be having completely different experiences depending on the type of joystick they were using.

Not to mention the fact that the games only used ONE fucking firebutton. Pushing UP to jump was just madness.

It's not exactly a secret that Turrican lifted a ton of things from other sources.

Some of the music is from the Transformers movie, the intro to 2 contains some images that look disturbingly like Macross while the ending screen is from a Moebius drawing, the player sprite itself is probably a modified sprite from Psycho-Nics Oscar, The Machine is the Marvel comic character Stryfe and the aliens are from, well, Aliens.

The fist was not optional, it was a boss right at the start of the 2nd level in Turrican 1 (nice touch to start off a level with a boss btw, don't recall it anywhere else tbqh). There were optional space ship bosses on Turrican 1 3rd level and Turrican 2 2nd level, and an optional dragon boss on Turrican 2 8th level.

This. ITT: sour murrikans shitting on Turrican just because they either never played any of the games, or if at all then just the console titles which aren't nearly as good as the two original Amiga games.

>> No.3642237

>>3642171
For the first one, that's how the game's damage system is designed (continuous rather than quantized damage). As for the second, the games were suited to the systems they came out for - the C64 and Amiga had one-button joysticks and the fire button was obviously reserved for, well, fire. Nearly all platformers on those systems used up for jumping as the button was usually needed for a primary action such as fire.

I played Turrican on a Master System and Megadrive control pad.
The game supported 2 buttons.

Turrican 1 and 2 are the best versions, due to their emphasis on exploration.

Mega and Super Turrican are both quality games, but their linear design takes alot of the fun out of them.

Turrican was perhaps the first Western platform/action game to be on par with Japanese titles.

To get to the space ship boss in T2 you have to hold left as you're falling down into the lower part of the level, the boss is on a high platform which cannot be reached from down below. The reward for beating the boss are two extra lives.

Finding one-ups is the main practical incentive to explore the levels thoroughly. In the old times I would finish Turrican II with over 30 lives in reserve as I got gud and knew how to traverse the maps efficiently (for best results you can't fuck around too much because of the timer which takes one life and downgrades your weapons by one level if it runs out) grabbing all the extra lives and barely losing any.
