Let's talk about retro easter eggs, discoveries and other types of hidden love letters spread across games from our old witty developers.
Personal experiences, commonly known or completely undiscovered up until now, all welcome.

I'll start...
I think the alcove where you first find the thief in Tomba! inside the lava caves resembles a piranha plant. The pillars are even jagged and doesn't appear anywhere else in the game or serve any purpose other than being part of the scenery.

Nintendo Power ran a contest to have someones name appear in a game. It was unclear what the game was, turns out it was Link to the Past.

That room is a debug room, designed as kind of a safety net. If the players grid X/Y coordinates fuck up, it triggers some kind of flag in the game code. There are several ways of doing it. If you fall into any hole with that grid fuckup active, the game may crash, so they set it to spit you into that debug room if that situation occurs. Exiting the room puts you back outside your home.

NoA kept the room quiet, and named it after the Nintendo Power contest winner.

"Call Apogee and say Aardwolf." It's a sign that to this day is something that I get asked about a lot. This is a sign that appears on a wall in a particularly nasty maze in Episode 2 Level 8 of Wolfenstein 3D. The sign was to be the goal in a contest Apogee was going to have, but almost immediately after the game's release, a large amount of cheat and mapping programs were released. With these programs running around, we felt that it would have been unfair to have the contest and award a prize. The sign was still left in the game, but in hindsight, probably should have been taken out. To this day, Apogee gets letters and phone calls and asking what Aardwolf is, frequently with the question, "Has anyone seen this yet?"

Also, in a somewhat related issue, letters were shown after the highest score in the score table in some revisions of the game. These letters were to be part of another contest that got scrapped before it got started, where we were going to have people call in with their scores and tell us the code; we'd then be able to verify their score. However, with the cheat programs out there, this got scrapped too.

Basically, "Aardwolf" and the letters mean nothing now. Also note that if you found the Aardwolf sign in the game (without cheating), there's a VERY strong chance that you're stuck in there. The only way out may be to restart, or load a saved game from before you went into that maze.

In a -4/castle level, be big Mario and jump over or run under Bowser. Wait for him to approach, then jump and time it so you hit him and the bridge switch at the same exact time. It's tricky at first but once you do it, you can pull it off pretty consistently.

First off, Kaoru Ogura, who ran off with some guy in the middle of the project. Yes, you, you bastard. Don't show up at the office without showering after having sex 6 times the previous night. Next, Tatsuya Ōhashi. Yes, you, you bastard. Don't give me your flippant shit — coming in late on the day we ship the ROM like nothing's amiss. You can give me all the porn you want; I'm not forgetting that one. All that fucking weight you put on. No wonder you paid out 18,000 yen and still got nothing but a kiss out of it. Kenji Takano, Namco debugger. You are a part-timer; don't dick around with the project planner. And finally, Kiyoharu Gotō, the biggest thorn to my side in this project. Yes, you, you bastard. Once I get a time machine, I’m sending you back to the Edo period. Go do your riddles over there.

Ahh, that's a load off...wait, no it's not. Kiyoharu Gotō — yes, you, you bastard. Aaaagh, just disappear already.

Come to think of it, some people were helpful to me, too. Mr. Okada, who took all the good stuff. I know all about your abnormal tendencies. Yamagishi, who swore off soaplands until the project was over. Go ahead, knock yourself out now. Iwata, who joined in midway and gave it all he had. Sorry I yelled at you. Keep hanging in there. Fujimura, Udopyu, you probably had it the worst of all. Thanks. I mean it. Gotō's the one to hate here. Also, Takayama, Kudō, Suzuki, Makki, Kaneko, Aihara, Sato (the angel of my heart), Iga. Thanks, everyone.

My favorite easter egg, of all time, comes from Ultima Underworld. In some ways, it was only because I didn't get it the first time.

So I'm crawling through the dungeon, and I see a plaque that says "Thou canst not defeat the Drakhai." This was a day before internet lookups were easy, and I hadn't shelled out the cash for a cluebook, so I thought the Drakhai was some tough beastie, maybe that invisible monster alluded to in the manual.

No luck finding one, and I beat the game, a little puzzled as to what it means.

Then, one day months later, I get this flight sim called Wing Commander 2. (I actually never played 1, got it after 2, great series; yeah, I'm an origin fan). Endless waves of those mini aces shouting in their stupid, tinny voices "YOU CANNOT DEFEAT THE DRAKHAI! YOU CANNOT DEFEAT THE DRAKHAI!" Made me want to blow every last one of them into slag.

Re-played UW1 years later, re-read the plaque. I laughed so hard my parents came up to my room, they thought I was having a seizure or something.

Anyone go back to Yoshi's Island 1 and fly up at the middle?

Or, better question, anyone NOT do that, and miss the 3up?

Not easter eggs. References.
I know Easter Eggs can be references, but there's a difference in this case.

Well, thread isn't technically just about easter eggs but anything along those lines.
Take it with a pinch of salt.

>I always enjoyed Easter eggs on the consoles themselves

This fucker right here tortured me as a child because I accidentally made it appear one day and was never able to replicate it until I got on the internet years later and looked it up.

Yes, I grew up with a Master System instead of an NES

An Easter egg is an intentional hidden message, inside joke, or feature in a work such as a computer program, movie, book, or crossword.

It's an easter egg. Pick your battles.

My guess is one christian dev snuck it in as an easter egg
Or it could be because it's the easiest religious symbol to make out of blocks

Duke 3D had a ton of easter eggs and movie references, and they kept it going in Blood. Here's a Duke 3D easter egg in that game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw5LZFWV58Y

There are christians in japan.

>> No.375084

You know, the no crosses rule was probably just a western thing. I doubt the Japanese really cared much about it, so they were probably more lax about it or it just slipped their mind.

It was a western thing, people are supposing that a Jap dev did it to fuck with the western censoring that was rampant during NES times.

It is not very likely that it was inserted by a Christian game dev. That requires way too many assumptions to be true.

>such as
A-Out of the small percentage of Japanese Christians one was part of the small team that made SMB3
B-That unlikely Christian was responsible for the design of that particular level
C-That Christian felt the need to insert a cross in the level for some reason
D-The insertion of the cross was deliberate
E-The insertion of the cross was intentionally hidden.
etc
etc

In Addams Family for the snes, there was an invisible door that i would always visit that took you to a room called pugsley's den with some extra lives and powerups. What I didn't know until watching a let's play recently was that there is another door inside that room, which leads to another hall with tons of doors all leading to rooms with more powerups and health.
