Racing games only reached their potential after the advent of 3D graphics and true elevation modeling.

Agree/disagree?

No, 2D and 3D racing games are almost two different genres. Kinda like 2D and 3D platformers.

Disagree, even though most of my favourite racing games are 3D I still have to see some game more intense than Super Monaco GP on arcade.

Disagree.

They still haven't reached their potential.

3D helped eventually but not necessary at all for a great game.

What's that?

>> No.3625647

>>3625640
Being able to actually have the terrain go higher or lower rather than just simulating it by having the track bend slightly up or down.

In other words you can do things like apply gravity to downhill sections and code it into the engine for realistic behavior.

I don't disagree, but it's still a 2D game that's good fun. I still think racers have a long way to go.

This game is great for pretending it's open world Sega Rally though.

You could do that in a 2D game as well, it's just coding.

The driving physics in that game always reminded me of Sega Rally, and I love you can set a waypoint that will take over an hour of constant racing to get to.

I have to agree. Hard Drivin' blew me away and it's terrible by any standard.

>Racing games only reached their potential after i played them
Agree/disagree asks for an opinion. The whole premise is wrong. Racing games will never reach their "potential". If you shit in the gene pool (please don't) your children will play racing games you can't imagine.

This. When I saw Hard Drivin' I couldn't believe how cool it looked.

When I played Ridge Racer, Need for Speed, Wipeout, Twisted Metal, and Destruction Derby on PS1 in 1995 I found a genre I had never cared about previously.

>>3625601

Agree.

I can't go back to Outrun or Hang On or Power Drift or even something like Super Mario Kart, even though those were the racing games I grew up with.

Good choice of picture OP, by the way. Rush 2 and 2049 (DC or Midway Arcade Classics version) are classics and I still go back to them from time to time.

Racing games reached max capability at a time that the autistic /vr/ people won't/can't talk about.

Maybe in 6th gen, definitely in that era for pc. 7th gen for consoles no doubt. Force feedback, proper clutch and handbrake, realistic grip/drifting, etc.

I would even wager vive/oculus might make racing take another leap, but doubtful.

racing games have never reached true potential

accelerated 3D graphics merely took down a technical limitation. a significant one, but not the only one

They peaked in 6th gen. Racing games today let you rewind so you can never truly learn from your mistakes.

that's not an advantage, you can apply gravity however you want based on the track data regardless of how it's drawn
a real advantage is stuff like bridges and underpasses, which are a right pain to implement in 2D based racers and almost trivial in 3D ones

really, you can do anything in a 2D racer, it's just much harder than in a 3D one, and you actually end up pretty much being a 3D racer that uses nothing but billboards to draw the graphics like Sega's later Super Scaler racing games
like, Sega's absolute last set of Super Scaler F1 games outright are 3D games despite only using scaled sprites, and the biggest issue there was having to draw sprites for each camera angle the object can be viewed

Racing games will reach their potential once you can feel the G force for real and die from the crashes
