Favorite monitor thread? I love the old Commodore 1701 and 1702 monitors. What is your favorite?

>> No.3625032

That wall of commodore monitors is making me envious. I was on the fence about buying a commodore monitor locally for 25 CAD, but now I'm gonna take that plunge.

Pro tip: Make sure it works BEFORE you buy it. I have the Commodore 1701 monitor, and the front ports work, but the back ports only display black and white video.

What things should I look out for when buying my monitor?

Bring in a console to test it, if you find one in person. I bought mine at a pawn shop. They let me bring in a console and test it. They're usually kind of rare/pricey, and they only wanted $20 for it, so I bought it even though the back didn't work properly.

Sounds good. The one I was going to buy is being sold by someone on Kijiji. I was gonna buy it and If there was something wrong with it, just return to their house and simply dump it back on their lawn. At least testing it will save me the money if there is any fuckery afoot

The Commodore 1701 and 1702 monitors. I'm so jelly

Will S video output from a regular console work on the chroma and lumince ports on the back, or am I stuck with composite? Also, how's the quality vs a standard crt?

I used to play N64, NES, SNES, et cetera on mine so I would imagine it would work fine.

I liked my old viewsonic 17PS. But in hindsight, a more normal 17GS would have easily been enough for me.

Nowadays though, I wish I had scooped up that lumbering P220F I came across.

Ain't got one. Don't have a dozen monitors to meaningfully compare. Don't have friends to play with either.

But this one seems interesting.

You very much can and should, you just need to buy a special cable that separates the chroma and luma or make one yourself. They go for around $8 on ebay. I use one on my Amiga 1080, the look is amazing. Compared to a standard CRT, it's pretty subjective but old Commodore monitors are some of the best composite/svhs monitors out there, so they're definitely better for that in most cases, especially for a desk set up.

Pic very much related. N64 / SVHS.

I know Nintendo themselves referred to Y/C video as SVHS (along with CE manufacturers with financial stakes in referring to S-video that way), but it's technically wrong and I beg you to stahp

Y/C or S-video please, my /vr/other

Make sure the back ports don't only display black and white video.

Amdek Color-I lends itself well for Nes and older games.

bit further back view of the monitor, as you can see it was designed to match the Apple II computer in particular.

Def 1701. I played every console I ever owned on mine.

They're for Y/C, i.e S-Video. A simple 2RCA to mini-din is all you need for that. If you've already tried that, it's very possible that the chroma jack has a broken/cold solder joint and just needs reflowed.

I had to kill Bob Morton because he made a mistake. Now it's time to erase that mistake.
