is the european version of sonic CD slower than the north american one? i wanted to play the european one because I like the music better, but I swear the Sonic is a bit slower and he floats in the air for longer.

Not every PAL game run slower. Some have good conversions. IIRC Sonic 2 plays at the intended speed but I could be mixing up with another one.

Can a DSI XL play GBA games?

Can a 3DS play DS games? And do those DS games utilize the extra screen space on the new 3DS?

None of the DSi models play GBA carts

All 3ds models play DS carts with real hardware. There is no stretch option. You either play at the same aspect ratio vertically stretched to fit, or at pixel perfect res which shrinks the image down a bit. I highly reccomend you play them on a 3dsxl/new3dsxl because it's twice the size of an old DS screen, thus it can fill the screen vertically perfectly witout distortion. DS games on the small 3ds look kinda icky and blurry.

Here's a pic of what I'm describing. The mode on the left looks like dogshit on regular 3ds, but looks amazing on an XL.

Yes. Because PAL has 50fps instead of 60. Rather than re-work all the logic and constants relating to running and jumping, etc, they just had the game run slower.

right, but the poster is suggesting that playing on a 3DSXL (old or new) is better than playing on a 2DS/3DS/N3DS, and I don't understand the argument that it looks better on the XL given that they are identical screens save for size. What's the basis for such a claim?

This is not retro and also some of you guys are wrong.

DS Phat and DS Lite are only DS that can take GBA carts. The DSi and DSi XL do not have the cart slot for a GBA. I think the processor is the same (just double clock speed) in the DSi, so maybe there is some way through homebrew I don't know about.

The 3DS can play GBA games natively if you have an ambassador system, or you hack it. Hacking it is a pain in the ass and i'm pretty sure they closed the security hole in newer firmwares. Check /vg/hbg .

Resolutions:
GBA resolution: 240 x 160
All DS models: Two screens at 256 x 192
All 3DS/2Ds models: Top: 400 x 240, Bottom 320x240

DS automatically windowboxes GBA games. It still looks good since the resolution is not too different.

3DS automatically does blurry stretching of DS games by default. Looks like ass. You can force a 1:1 pixel ratio by holding start or select when launching DS software. Crisp but small screen, sorta okay for the XL variants though.

That guy saying some shit about "twice the size" is turbowrong.

The choice of what NON RETRO REEEE nintendo handheld you want gets even more complicated when you consider the shitload of variants and various quality of LCD screens available. I generally like the AGS-101 for GBA and previous, the DS lite for emulating GB/GBC, the "New 3DS" non-XL for actual 3DS games, and the "New 3DS" XL for emulating 3rd and 4th gen.

>> No.3623306

>>3623285

Was that really the reason? The JP music is super funky and fun, and very "Sonic" like. I'd be very surprised if they thought American audiences wouldn't like it...

>> No.3623335

>>3623306
I believe so, though I won't pretend to be an expert on the subject. I just know that they changed the soundtrack for the US. Everything except the Past levels (those have their music encoded into the actual game files I believe) was changed. On the plus side, we got Sonic Boom out of this, so it wasn't all bad.

>>3623302
This is a good post, retro or not.

I will add to this that the most excellent Sega 3D Classics series come off as being a little hard to see properly on the non-XL systems, and prefer the large XL size screen for those games.

Also hacking got much easier in the last two months. Worth looking into if you have a 3DS (or especially if you have a New 3DS).

Now my quick question, can you use a GBA link cable for GB/GBC games if playing on a GBA? The connector won't fit in a GB/GBC, but it will fit in a GBA, and GBAs do play GB/GBC games.

>> No.3623412

No. Out of the 16-bit games only Sonic 1 was not speed adjusted for PAL. Ignore comments from Ameriburgers who've never played a PAL game in their life.

>>3623260
It's redbook CD audio, you just burn the tracks you want as audio.

You could probably do it with a multisession disc, burn the data track but do not fixate the disc, then burn the audio tracks as a seperate operation and fixate the disc.

Any other good retro ports on the DS that you'd recommend?

>> No.3623605

>>3623412
Even if it got a proper speed conversion, it is still possible that some things have different timings or act differently.
It's not as simple as "changing the overall speed of the game" like you would on an emulator, and some actions may not be possible to convert accurately depending on how they are timed to begin with.

So yes, MAYBE Sonic does "float longer in the air" in the PAL version like OP suggested.

The XL will make the DS games the exact same screen size as the DS/Lite

While the correct resolution on the smaller 3DS will make the screens smaller.

There is no distortion at all. The screens are smaller on the 3DS thats all.

I want to start buying japanese ps1and ps2 games. I have a pal ps2 and pal ps1 but would like to play them on my pc. I've got a blu ray drive would it be as simple or putting the disc in and running it or would I have to do stuff like burn it and making an iso?
