Shining Force 3 is an example of a developer taking a great game and absolutely ruining it with perspective and 3D graphics.

"Hey, you know how our players need to be able to see things like troops and obstacles? Let's just give it an isometric view too close to the ground, so they can't see shit or strategize in our strategy game. Better fuck up camera controls as well too, just for good measure." -- The person who killed the Shining Force series.

Shining Force 1 I find is more challenging, as long as you promote immediately.

Although some characters are so terrible if you don't wait till 20 they're useless.

I just played this a few days ago and remembered why I quit.

>early in the game, letting the nostalgia wash over me
>all those beloved old faces, Ken, Luke, Tao, Lowe, Hans...
>Hans
>he had just killed a Dark Dwarf and leveled, getting +1 Attack, +3 Agility
>power flickered from storm outside and shut the game off
>no big deal
>quickly got back to where I was
>Hans leveled and got +3 Agility with no Attack
>suddenly remembered level-ups gave stat boosts in a range and a series of shit level-ups could fuck your character in the long run
>autism kicks in and begin researching what the maximum stats were for every level up of every character
>savescumming becomes a necessity
>quit having fun
>fuck

Is there anyone that's found a way to turn that gnawing autism off? Just... not care that you're getting shitty rolls and keep going? Because this is fucking miserable.

Yeah, the variance in the first SF is too damn high. I just deal with whatever gains the games throws at me. Still remember fondly how Mae's first level gave her +7 defence making her a great tank for the rest of the game and my centaur waifu.

Just go with SF2 if you don't want to bother with random level ups, there is much less variance.

Love it. Always get the urge to replay it.
While SF2 had some good shit added, I didn't like it as much. The character designs weren't nearly as good, I only liked 4 characters. The disney kiss ending left a bad taste in my mouth. I didn't like the witch in the main title screen as much as the loli. Some battles felt tedious and some cutscenes dragged on too much. I don't mind the game being longer but not like that. Also there wasn't a single song I liked as much this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOeE-i3b-Vs
Some nit picking but still.

Promoting late is a meme. You might get 10 straight level ups of absolutley nothing, whereas a promoted character is guarenteed to get some stats. Promote as soon as possible to get rid of worthless level ups. Only savescummers are likely to benefit from promoting late and you're not a dirty savescummer, are you?
