the SN76489 is really, really, REALLY basic, 3 squares and one noise
And on top of that, you can't really fully use the 3rd square because of how it interacts with the noise channel.

It is a fabulous companion to the YM2612 but again, few composers made the effort to make it an integral part of musics.

I am wondering if any composer ever used that cool bassline the noise channel can produce, as already heard in the Alien track and Cool Spot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTsUowu-hUQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXVD6MiJTRo
That is one really cool feature of the SN76489 and if the third channel had been able to produce that sound without cutting of the noise, it would've made a big difference.

But now to some real good shit. Gimmick recorded from real hardware:

in landstalker the 3rd square is used for sound effects and dialog sounds (always loved how climax did this to give a voice to characters), and the noise is used for sword swipe, so if you jump and swipe in quick succession you can hear the noise being affected by the 3rd square.
In Sonic games 3rd square is used for only 1 effect, the button beep.
In Rocket Knight Adv, all 3 squares are used but not the noise.

It is the only component Sega didn't upgrade from their SG-1000 console. It's quite interesting comparing SG-1000/SC-3000 OST to Master System OST and realizing they use the same soundchip.
Anyway, when the NES launched alongside the SG-1000, the NES was much more powerful in every respect, even sound. Add in the fact that the Famicom supported additional hardware and audio channels through cartridges and the SG-1000 was beat. Sega rectified this only with the FM Sound addition and Jap SMS, but those worked like the PS4 Pro; improvement for some games, worse for others, and mostly no support at all.

You mean you can actually synthesize any sound with a chip that's essentially just doing a bunch of maths?

"Chiptunes" always feel unmistakably electronic, to the point its become part of the aesthetic. Can these chips somehow synthesize sounds that are exactly like real instruments? Guitars? Piano?

It's probably a uneducated beginner question but I've been asking myself this for the longest time

>> No.3639230

chiptunes most of the time reffer to basic wave shapes, square, triangle, sawtooth, white noise.
But sometimes samples are also part of chip music. The SID for example can only use square, triangle, sawtooth and noise, but by altering volume you can make it produce an audible click, and some composers used it to play samples.

The basic soundwaves, triangle, square/pulse, saw, sine, in their purest forms are rich in overtones (with the exception of sinewave which contains no overtones). What most basic soundchips aren't able to do is soundsculpting (rounding off overtones) with a filter and emphasizing the cutoff. A real instrument such as a violin can be approximated with a saw wave, a flute with a square wave, filtering out the overtones not present and boosting the frequency range the instrument tends to resonate. This is a crude way of doing it because if you look at a spectragram you'll realize that it has several of these sections.

By having a bank with several filters you could get a much more accurate impression (I saw some one do this on youtube, they took a Jupiter 8 horn pad and ran it through the memorymooog's multiple filters to produce a very good sounding horn section, they also did it for woodwinds, both are really hard instruments to synthesize. Can't find the video.) What you also need is to simulate how the sound vibrates through the body if it has a resonant chamber like a violin or guitar as well as the space its in (reverb). A piano is difficult because the strings not being played will vibrate in sympathy with eachother. Then there are things like vibrato and dynamic expression to consider as well. So it is possible, just requires more technology than vintage computer sound chips are capable of.

Found the video, it was a polymoog, not memorymoog.

Here's some one using a theremin and a talkbox (basically shifting filter) that gets pretty close to approximating the human singing voice.

the lack of a clock divider to lower the fucking pitch means that devs couldn't have any bass, keeping songs in ugly twittering ranges, preventing using the square for useful drums, etc
the Sonic games on the machine have great soundtracks though

>>3618612
you can use the third square however you want, it's programmably linked to the noise channel, and most games just leave it unlinked almost always

you can configure it to sync its playback rate to the noise channel, which is really useful with periodic noise mode (which IIRC, no game actually uses) which allows the noise channel to be a low pulse width tone channel (and you can have some semblance of bass with it).

unless you're talking about something else, but SMS games pretty much constantly use all four channels at once

Alien 3 ?
>SMS games pretty much constantly use all four channels at once
That's true.
MD games however tend to use 2 square + noise, or use the 3rd square for very specific sounds.
RKA uses all 3 squares but not the noise.
Sonic use the 3rd for button/score beep only
Landstalker use the 3rd for jump and dialog sounds and the noise for sword swipe, so by jumping and swiping in succession you can hear the square being affected.

As much as I love mystic quest, none of those guitar samples really match thunder force IV's 4 channel FM guitar. At least not in terms of punch, and you know it. SNES can do some things really well, but it very rarely is able to hit as hard as the genesis.

one chosen out of many for a specific reason. SNES' ram limitations make it hard to use high fidelity samples.
There are dozens of games with good music on the system anyway.

famicom sound go in the cartridge, then come back to the board, to then be output. Games without expansion audio just bridge the 2 cart pins.
games with audio expansion mix original audio with their sound, but they could also ignore original audio altogether.
the md is similar, it has 2 audio pins coming from the cart that get mixed into the final audio. I was never used with MD carts, but it was with the 32X. After Burner 32X tracks are just streamed like an audio CD, they're literally arcade perfect.

I mean this with absolute sincerity, the PC Engine was the greatest 8-bit system of all time. Not including the SNES bullshit 16-bit pseudo color cycling, nothing beat their max on screen until the Neo Geo came along. Add CD-ROM with 16-bit stereo PCM and this thing was so boss.
