>We were actually very close to signing the game up directly with Nintendo as publisher. Mr Miyamoto told us that currently (when we showed them the alpha version) the game was the third best platform game after Mario and Sonic, but if they worked with us on finishing it he would help us make it the second best, after Mario. This is like shitting on the original Sonic because Mario came out before it.

Yoshi's Island's shooting mechanic is both more useful and more fun. Its vehicles help the player instead of screwing them over. The camera is less zoomed out, the movement physics have more depth, the levels have more variety, and I even think the music is better (nobody gives a fuck about Plok's soundtrack other than "Beach").

Btw the only thing Plok needed was a publisher who wouldn't have jewed away a battery-backed save memory the game much needed, and some six more months of development time to polish the game and even out the difficulty curve a bit. Then it surely would have become the big hit it always deserved to be.

You can't compare Nintendo's development resources to those of some two dudes from England. Obviously Nintendo refined the ideas and they could have easily afforded to give their game any polish it needed (not to mention they didn't have to beg anyone for a save RAM on the cart), but it's apparent that Plok is most likely where they got the ideas in the first place.

>Even Ste Pickford admitted that YI was better.
I used to post on a forum where these Pickfords posted. I knew they did games but I never knew they did Plok.

Not that I liked Plok.

>Rumor has it that when Shigeru Miyamoto first heard Plok's theme song, he didn't believe it was coming from a regular SNES and that the composer must have installed a modified audio chip. If true, his shock is understandable – this sounds more like a big band jam session than a 16-bit computer file.

It was quite popular in Germany for some reason. Interestingly enough, virtually all the level/location names and also some character names were completely changed.

Cotton Island -> Pota Pota
Acrillic -> Famosa
Legacy Island -> Nostalgia
Bobbins Brothers -> Pogo-Brueder (Pogo Brothers)
Womack Spider -> Ekeltyp (Disgusting Guy)

Rockyfella -> Dr. Faustus (I guess this one was inspired by the part where you fight Rockyfella as a boss right before the Fleapit - his major attack are fists, and "Faust" means "fist" in German).

90% of tim follin's music is him essentially stealing from progressive rock. Gets kinda boring after the novelty wears off, not much in the way of variety or mood pieces. His later work in the early 00's is neater.

Kenichi Hiirata is a much less celebrated (and much less pretentiously celebrated) for his work. He mostly focused on a single game series, but the music he gave the series was both fun and iconic. It's catchy, cute, intense when it needs to be, and successfully delivers on various moods. It capitalized on new hardware and withstood numerous remixes and different types of instrumentation. It's music that is truly flexible, unlike Follin's.

If you haven't listened to the music for the Cotton games, I'd suggest checking out pretty much every version of the Fantastic Night Dreams soundtrack. Yes, even the Java phone port's music. Check out Panorama Cotton's sick YM2612 songs that captialized on the winding fm synth possible with it, as well as the powerful bass it could deliver, Cotton 2 on the Saturn's wild soundtrack that takes advantage of all 32 channels available, and lastly Cotton Rainbow's music on the dreamcast, which is a purely upbeat affair where even the final boss track has an incredibly cheery quality to it that will give you a tune to whistle for months on end.

Hall and Oates must have been on that team.
