Sonyfag detected. There isn't a single game that requires both the d-lad and the joystick - your left hand is always on either the left or center handle. And that article you linked doesn't really speak for the N64 controller, but rather tells me that Sakamoto was unimaginative.

How? Most games are 3D and require the joystick. Some games such as Kirby 64 or Goemon's Great Adventure are 2D and let you use the D-pad. Every potential function is catered to, so how does that make it a "terrible" design?

A well designed controller is one where you can hold it in a comfortable way and where each of the buttons, pads and triggers on it are in a good position for use. That's the basis of ergonomics and what the N64 controller fails at.

That's not to say it's unusable. Obviously it works and you can play the games that were designed for it. But compared to every other controller for a major system it's among the worst.

I asked for this abomination as a youngster because I thought it would be cool to play turnbased games with and would leave one hand free to munch on snacks and sip soda. The Playstation style of D-pad prevents you from accidently hitting diagonals but if you do want to go diagonal its a bit cumbersome.

The Nintendo style of D-pad is a joy to hit diagonals with but unless it's built real good orthogonal presses can unwittingly activate diagonals.

What characteristics does the Sega style of D-pad generally have?
The Saturn one is perfect but the 3DO one feels just like a rounded Nintendo D-pad going diagonal when you don't want to.

sega round d-pads are way different during the ages.
The original megadrive id shit all around actually almost x360 level of shit.
With the 3-button revision controller they fixed it up a bit, now it has a proper and ingenious mechanism where the pivot is under the board.
finally the six button controller shares the amazing d-pad that wioll be inherited by the saturn, which ha the pivot just under the circle, but said pivot is virtual and actually given by the shape of the d-pad receptacle
