It seems like the thing is literally a Raspberry Pi running Linux, which is a little bit disappointing, Nintendo is selling to the nostalgia hungry masses what fans has been doing for free but with a nicer official package and exterior shell.

>Nintendo’s NES Classic is, at its core essence, a Nintendo-approved NES emulator that comes with 30 ROMs. It feels very similar to the sort of thing people have been building for ages by running Linux on a Raspberry Pi — with the main difference from a conceptual standpoint being that the NES Classic is considerably less legally questionable.

>It turns out the differences pretty much end there. If you take apart an NES Classic — like GameSpot’s Peter Brown did — you’ll see that Nintendo builds its retro emulators a whole lot like the rest of us do.

>Inside the NES Classic is a quad-core Linux computer with 256MB of RAM and 512MB of flash memory for storage. In other words, it runs off a standard off-the-shelf circuit board with some custom software. It seems that the best way to build an emulator, whether you’re messing around with a development board or a multi-billion dollar console producer, is to just drop a bunch of ROMs into a custom version of Linux.

>And while the specs may seem low when compared to today’s modern consoles and computers, it still provides more than enough power for emulating the finest 30 games the 1980s had to offer.

>Those hoping to crack apart the NES Classic and take advantage to its open software to add more games are out of luck, as the flash memory is soldered to the motherboard — so if you’re looking to play more than Nintendo’s chosen 30 games, a more traditional emulator may be a better option. But while the NES Classic may be lacking in customizability, it does still has one major advantage over a Raspberry Pi: style.

Yes, but they were softmoded through the SD slot or through the internet, the other anon is talking specifically about the somewhat obscure Wii Mini (pic related) the last revision of the Wii that couldn't get hacked because it didn't have an USB or SD slot nor access to the internet, it only played games on disc.

The NES mini doesn't have any either and everything it's soldered on a chip so it's very unlikely that is going to be hacked. see >>3607551

just came into this thread to say that if a soldered chip scares you you are a fucking pleb. Probably most people won't hack it but I bet that in a few month a couple of hackers will have desoldered the Chip, and since it's a standard flash they will dump everything with IC2 and decode the ROMS images, and then feeding your info to the system through a custom board (or just re-flashing the chip) is a joke.

I was 8th in line and this was me being there 25 min before opening time. Everyone in front seemed to be genuinely interested in the product because they all purchased a warranty (though I did not). I asked if there were any controllers, and she said there was only 2 available, and I guess 2 bozos up front purchased them before I got to it.

Anyway, if you're interested in the controller, good fucking luck lmao. Side note: Somebody in the line said Walmart is restocking these on Tuesday, but it was unclear how many and I'm not sure if they're restocking controllers.

Is there any confirmation that you can just plug this thing into a wiimote and it'll work? (with WiiVC)

Absolutely mind-boggling.

Either the people trying to make a profit who bought up a couple dozen will fail to sell before Nintendo shits out another batch for Black Friday, or someone will be stupid enough to pay these absurd prices and have unimaginable regret when they see them going for $50 less than a month from now. Either way it'll be fun to watch.

No. I have three different famicoms + a PAL NES, a famicom everdrive N8, a Wii and a computer.
Plenty of ways to play these games already.

However I am curious about one thing : do the PAL version of that thing run in 60hz? If so, would that mean the games are NTSC-U on it? or is it US only at the moment?

>> No.3611727

>>3611716
There is a PAL release planned. If I'm correct it will be coming out next week.

If it does run 60hz, It would be a massive improvement over the og PAL NES.

I'm just not willing to put down 60 bucks for an emulation machine with a bunch of games that I already own, just to play them at a higher frame rate.

>Well, that's what happens when you only send 5 systems to each store.

This was intentional on Nintendo's part. Its a marketing ploy. All the news coverage of people looking for it and insane prices will make Nintendo look popular again in time for the holiday.

You might be right, or it might just be simple incompetence. it's honestly hard to tell.

I seriously find it hard to understand why would ANYONE buy it aside from sheer nostalgia.

Buying an xbox one controller and playing ALL the games from the NES library sounds much more fun to me.

Besides desu I am more fond of the SNES, because it has games that have yet to be surpassed by current games, or those which started a trend.

Yes, and people have.
Maybe not for 10,000 burger bucks, but definitely 500.

A lot of women in line were buying it for their husbands. The thing that I didn't understand is how they knew they had to be in line so early. We're not anywhere near black friday. It was weird.

Because ever since the Cabbagepatch dolls in the 80s, you've had to get in line ASAP if you want your shot at the newest hotshot toy. This is common knowledge by now.
