how can i display my collection in an actual aesthetic way instead of looking like an autistic hoarder?

>> No.3602108

You pretty much answered your own question with your pic. A large, well-organized bookshelf and cable management goes a long way. He even has a little cable-cover running behind the TV so you don't see those two extra cables. Clean as fuq.

Honestly bro, I come to the conclusion that 90% of it has to stay out of sight, boxed and labeled. No dust, no sun damage, easy storage. And with each system style boxed separately it's really easy to just bring it out of storage every time you want to play.

It's all about cleanliness honestly.

A bookshelf that's not organized is clutter, if it's organized, it's not clutter.

I'm going to have to build some bookshelves or hit up ikea or some shit since my old ones weren't shaped right for it.

>> No.3602314

I keep all my games in a dresser. Keeps them out of the sun and away from dust, and makes organizing them very easy. I don't get to have them all out on display but honestly I'm fine with keeping things minimalistic. It isn't like I'm gonna need a game shelf to stand in front of for YouTube videos.

Use furniture you would use use if it weren't used for games. And keep the shit out of site. In my living room all my consoles are in a pair of Ikea cabinets with roller shutters. In the master bedroom they're all in a cabinet with doors. Even in the den they're in a cabinet with a door. You would basically never know they're then until you opened something.
Use flash carts and mod chips. If you want to collect original games that's fine. But there's no reason to ever see them. Only autistic hoarders put them on display.

I do this. I use boxes that are big enough to contain one console + everdrive + 2/4 controllers + cables etc. Each console has it's own box.

I use the boxes that are clear on all sides, with clear lids. They're easiest to see what system is what at a glance. They let light in, so I keep them in a dark closet.

I made myself have a limit of three consoles at once. When I want to get a new one out I put one away.

I have some boxes that hold my collections of original games, but I keep those in storage. I personally don't see the need or want to have more than maybe 3-4 games out and visible at a time. It's a lot of visual clutter.

Like the picture you posted. A nice big bookshelf with games organized (I like to organize by console first, then alphabetically by each console.)

And heck if you want to go all the way even add dividers that have letters and console names/icon for easier and quicker access.

Kinda on topic:
I myself have actually been looking into getting a glass lockable case/shelf for my CD-ROMs and gamecube games. The reason is really out of anxiety that either my friends or sister will take my games under my nose; even if I trust my friends. Not really the case with my sister though... Ever since we were little she's always nabbed stuff from me and I've sometimes did the same. And now that she lives across the country and only comes here for holiday breaks I always gotta hide them from her because I have the suspicion that she's sold some of my gamecube and 3ds games to either gamestop or local used game shop...

TL;DR: Looking into getting a lockable case for my games because sister sometimes takes them with her across the country and/or sells them for a quick buck

I do the same but am not that good about keeping my systems out in limit. I have 6 now, I excuse the wii and wiiu because of how tiny they are.

But yeah, the lesson is organization. I recommend on top of your move doing what I do, which is putting every controller into a resealable plastic bag with a pack of silica gel, and also putting a pack in with each console box as well (or two for big boxes). If you live in a humid climate like I do, then it's very important to keep moisture down. The bags for controllers also keeps cables from getting tangled and is easier than using cable ties, at least to me. Though I also use velcro cable ties on some controllers (ie. xbox pads because of their very long cables).

Hot and dry over here, so the main things I need to watch out for are sun and heat. Had some boxes and my SNES faded/yellowed out, but no issues with moisture so far.

The boxes that I use aren't very A E S T H E T I C , but I try to keep them tucked out of sight so it doesn't really matter that much. The annoying thing is that they all open from the top, so getting at a console that's on the bottom of the stack usually requires like 60 seconds of towers-of-hanoi reshuffling.

Once I'm all settled with like a mortgage and shit I might try getting a set of drawers.

The main thing I really like about the boxes is that it makes moving a console from room to room/in and out of storage much easier, since you can get everything you need in one go. I used to have to make a couple trips or awkwardly try to hold 6 things as I went up and down the stairs.

No. We just don't want a wall of plastic in our homes. The thing is, the sheer amount of games someone owns most likely directly correlates to their autistic need to line them up and display them. People with small, focused collections of their favorite games generally have no desire to display them to the world and just keep them in a box, cabinet or drawer nearby. Also, I think most game carts look like shit lined up on a shelf, but that might just be me. I sure as hell ain't paying out the ass for stupid aftermarket, hipster-approved retro game cases like in OPs pic, either.

I bought some collapsible media boxes that are supposed to be for CDs and DVDs, and they fit most game carts nicely, and I just keep them on a shelf under or near my entertainment center. It ends up being far more efficient than lining them up on a shelf, or even worse, stacking them vertically on shelves, as many anons seem to do.

There's a couple guidelines.

DON'T USE BOOKSHELVES. Bookshelves are much deeper than necessary, games need to be flush or close to flush with the front of the shelf to really pop. Instead look for media shelves

NO TOYS. This is what really amplifies the apparent autism in displaying a game collection. You may love all your figurines and amiibos, but to normal humans they look like toys for children.
