Here's a few notable games:
Der Langrisser
Front Mission 2
Fire Emblem 5
Tactics Ogre
Phantasy Star IV
Romancing SaGa 3
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Grandia
Seiken Densetsu 3
Valkyrie Profile
Live a Live
Metal Max Returns
Terranigma

Strategy games are not JRPGs

neither are action games.

Just having some sort of EXP system is not enough to count as a JRPG.

It's normal, if someone asks what the best thing is people are going to turn it into a e-peen contest and waste posts to tell you how shit your taste is because you don't like the things they like.

If OP asked people to talk about their favorite JRPGs things would have probably gone marginally better, but these threads are going to turn to shit 90% of the times anyway.

Besides, talking about why one likes a certain RPG without being extremely concised to the point of oversimplification means actually making good, informative posts which require a lot of effort, and if that effort is going to be wasted on a shitposting thread I guess not many people are actually motivated to properly explain their opinions.
I mean, I like Metal Max and SaGa games for instance, but I'd need at least four posts to properly explain anything without sounding like an offensively dumb fanboy, if this was the /vr/ of a few years ago I would have done it, but nowadays there's not really a good incentive to do that on a regular basis, and this thread doesn't look promising either.

>since i hated the ps2 one and turned it off after 10 minutes
I don't think you'd like MM is you hated MS.
What didn't you like about it?
Keep in mind MM games have kind of a slow start and are quite a bit non linear too.
I personally really like the overall concept of tanks, exploration, non linearity and the Mad Max scenario, which the first two games do wonderfully imho, but it definitely an acquired taste, it's one of those few games that I also play for the lore.
>and i'm interested in SaGa, as i really like FF2.
Well, that's a good start, if you liked FF2's system I'm positive you'd like at least some SaGa games as they really improve that system, though you should also know that SaGa games also thrive on innovation and mechanical complexity more than anything so they might be a bit too heavy and confusing for the average player.
Not to mention, every game does more or less its own thing so there's no guarantee you'd like the series as a whole, there is some common ground but the differences between games is pretty stark on average, and some game might be too exotic in terms of mechanics.

I personally love the series because of that, mechanical complexity, focus on gameplay and leading innovation in the genre, not to mention the great music, crazy scenarios and superb replay value, but it is a very limited answer.

If you're interested in more opinions on the series you should head over to the SaGa threads, people there can answer your question and guide you towards something you might like, granted that you give the necessary inputs.

>Strategy games are not JRPGs
Let's not do this again anon. JRPG itself is such an overused clasification that is has no meaning anymore. It can be applied to anything from Zelda 2 to Valkyria Chronicles, River City Ransom to Demon's Souls. And not because fans think this way, but because the companies that made the games classified them this way.

Also, Tactical/SRPGs are still RPGs. And unless you're an idiot, a JRPG is just an RPG made in Japan.

>>3598657

See this guy? He's the idiot who thinks JRPG is a style. Problem with that is, if JRPG is a style, then you can start classifying games like Ultima or KOTOR as JRPG.

>> No.3599030

>>3599024
>JRPG is just an RPG made in Japan
It isn't though, it refers to games in the Dragon Quest lineage--what the Japanese call "light RPGs." They have a separate classification for things like Fire Emblem.

>> No.3599068

>>3599030

In Japan, they don't even use the classification JRPG. They just call everything RPG. Either tactical, turn based or action.

WRPG and JRPG were terms coined in the west in the early 90s. And adopted by the media. Same as 'hardcore' and 'casual'.

>They have a separate classification for things like Fire Emblem.
But they still call them RPGs. And they're still made in Japan.

Not much, I've been playing more modern games than usual lately, and there's a new SaGa game coming right up next month so I won't probably be playing retro RPGs for a while, gotta crack that nut first.

Talking about retro I've been mainly snooping around the internet and looking at various devs' portfolios, especially for Saturn and PS, there's quite a lot of games that caught my attention though the list is far too long as usual.

I've played a bit of Artdink's Vampire: Kyuuketsuki Densetsu for PS, it's a nice game, much in line with Artdink's passion for Sim-RPGs, seems to me it runs on the same engine as Lunatic Dawn 3, or at least, a very similar one. It's a pretty decent action RPGs about warrying vampires in a village, you can do some cool shit like transforming and all the various vampire stuff, it's also pretty story focused and inspired by western vampire stories down to the aesthetic, it gives off a very european feeling, the gameplay is typical Artdink, it's very sim oriented with real time, night and day cycles, multiple routes, detailed NPC interactions and routines and so on, but I need to play more of it to see how much there really is to the game, it's enjoyable if you like that sort of RPG and don't mind simplistic but atmospheric graphics.

I tried to get into Necromancer for PCE as I've had it sitting in my backlog, but I couldn't get very far due to boredom, it has a decently spooky presentation for its time but the hiragana only text is irritating and the shallow gameplay and music isn't anything to write home about.
Then I tried Blade Arts for PS because I put it in the A-RPG folder, turned out it was not a RPG at all, it's still a cool action game despite being a bit clunky on the controls, it's pretty damn engaging and the giant boss fights are cool, some of those even have bosses being able to destroy parts of the environments like pillars, that was a pleasant surprise, imagine a Tomb Raider meets DMC in South American ruins.

Then I recently gave a go to Assault Suit Valken II, but I just completed the first mission so I can't really give you an opinion on the game as a whole, it's not really obscure either so there's probably a few anons around who can tell you more about it. I'm sad there's no Urushihara but I liked the tutorial mission and general art direction, it seems a decent Front Mission expy.

Then again, there's a few games coming out that are going to grab my attention, the new SaGa alone seems just as meaty as the others if not more, and that's just one of the games I'm waiting to play, so no serious Retro effort for a while.

How about you? Have you found something you want to talk about?

>> No.3600763

>>3600583
>Vampire: Kyuuketsuki Densetsu

Now that's obscure, never heard of it. How do you find about those games?
I've been more focused in SFC but it's difficult to know when a game it's actually good or just a turd with a nice presentation.

>> No.3600840

>>3600763
>How do you find about those games?
If you ask me, the best thing to do is going to the JP wikipedia page of any devhouse and see the games they released, the JP pages are usually better than the english ones. Then you look at the titles released one by one, with cerain devs like Artdink it's easy since they did mostly RPGs or Sim-RPGs so most of the times you'll find a goldmine.
The problem of course arises when you are not aware of certain devhouses existing in the first place, there's not much to do in this case other than scouring sites with full catalogs of each console's games or places like Emuparadise and scroll down long lists of games, but it takes a lot of time and I find it too dispersive.
One thing I also do is looking at online platforms like PSN, they usually have a decent selection of both classic, niche and cult titles, classified by publishers and/or developers, so you get quite a lot of info and you can start a new hunt from that.
>but it's difficult to know when a game it's actually good or just a turd with a nice presentation.
Well, you know what the say, you have to break those eggs if you want to do a homelette, there's no other way, and sometimes the game just doesn't click with you at the moment but going back on it some time later makes you want to continue playing it and you might even find out it's actually not that bad after all or vice versa, it's hard to properly judge and get a good taste out of games.

A lot also depends on how you judge games, there's people who play it for the story, people who play it for gameplay, people who can appreciate the technical efforts and finesse and building of a graphic engine, how the game performs, level design, art direction and so on, there's a whole load of things you can analyze and appreciate depending on what kind of person you are, and that too drives your search and influences your judgement of games.
But I digress.
