the video hardware is much more optimized for text mode than graphics drawing
shitty UK developers were put into awful shitty deadlines by shitty publishers, so a lot of games were rushed and shit, arcade ports were often done without even having access to the board or the ROM data, etc, etc
there's other reasons, I'm too lazy to go into them

on the other hand, the SID is a synthesizer that's designed like something you would actually play as a musician
like, a SID would make a brilliant monosynth if you hooked up a piano keyboard to it

really, its featureset is much, much, much more like a live-play instrument than something you'd see as a sound chip
