I always see threads on /vr/ praising this game. Never thought much of it, until the other day I was craving some retro fps and decided to give the PC version a go.

I'm 3 levels in and fucking loving it. The praise is deserved. It's not a meme. How is this game not more well known? What the fuck happened to the FPS genre post-1998? Did Half-Life really set the whole genre off a shitty tangent for more than a decade?

This game is pure unadulterated FPS goodness. Reminds me somewhat of old goodies like Serious Sam, while at the same time sometimes it feels like I'm playing something like Metroid Prime with the exploration and puzzle solving and beautiful environments.

Can anyone recommend similar games/series I might have overlooked?

Also Turok general I guess.

Please, tell me more what you think about it, personal thoughts and opinions, rtc.
Its fun to see someone new to the topic describe with passion something that you knew for some time. Its refreshing, seeing it for the first time by proxy of newguys eyes.

I guess it's really refreshing for a game to have big uninterrupted chunks of great gameplay. No dialogue, no AI allies to worry about, no cinematic cutscenes other than the mission briefs or whatever. I feel like each level takes me about a couple of hours to complete. Its great to just get lost in a game and let time fly by. The guns, the health pickups, the powerups etc. It all feels so solid. It feels like a real GAME. I feel like regenerating health and other gimmicks really killed this genre.

Just wait until you get to level 4, you'll either give up at the first 30 minutes and look up a guide or get lost for four hours before calling it quits.

I just got an everdrive and have been revisiting all the N64 games.

The controls, man... those fuckin N64 controls. I just can't get as into the N64 FPS the way I used to now that we've been spoiled with proper twin sticks.

I love Turok 1 but could never get into Turok 2 due to the input delay, it's one of the most unresponsive games I've ever played. The PC version was a little better but still bad. I'm eagerly awaiting the remaster though.

As for an underrated series, if you've never played Hexen before, they're pretty good old school FPS games. Hexen 2 in particular is a very overlooked game. Ideally you'd want to play them in coop with a friend on harder difficulty, it makes it way more fun. They're somewhat similar to Turok in that there are different themed worlds, you'll get stuck and have to wander around for hours without a guide, and it's mostly pure action.

Level 4 is Lair of the Blind Ones right? I'll be tackling it tomorrow. What makes it so bad? I've had to backtrack to find missed objectives a couple of times already.

>>3593939

I played Time Splitters 2 briefly on PS2 a long time ago. Never got a proper impression of it. Are there any ports of it?

>>3593968

To be completely honest I haven't noticed input delay. There is a certain feel to the control though, like it feels kind of....weighty? Not sure how to describe it. Like there is inertia behind your actions. It feels like you're actually controlling a human, and that you can't zip around everywhere like you're light as a feather.

Is there a specific plugin or settings for this in Project64?

>> No.3594026

Pretty sure you should be able to bind keyboard keys. It was also released for PC way back in the day, and there is a remaster that came out last year with mouse controls + new graphics options.

I just customized the PC version controls to be like your standard WASD shooter. For n64 you might be out of luck, I don't think PJ64 has support for mouse but I might be wrong

I guess the franchise is pretty well known but what I meant was more along the lines of how does it not get more recognition for being as good as it is. I rarely see it talked about except in niche places like this

And it only gets worse from level 4 onwards.

On level six everything tries to kill you.

The doors leave you to die, the walls want to kill you, the floor toasts your ass, the water kills you, hell even the air gangs up with everything to try and kill you.

Just completed Level 4. Really loved the underground/cave-diving atmosphere and the music was great. Got lost a couple times and had to backtrack from the end of the level to find a thermal vent I missed but overall not TOO bad. The guys with the crossbows were annoying as fuck. Also fuck spiders.

Am I the only one fascinated by the setting of these games? The concept of the Lost Land, a place unaffected by time where anything from any place or time period in the universe can co-exist. Dinosaurs, tribesmen, cyborgs, demons, mercenaries, robots, mutants, man-eating plants, cyborg dinosaurs, mutant dinosaurs, the undead, super-intelligent insects, etc etc. Sounds silly on paper but in practice is actually pretty fucking awesome. I wish they'd explore that concept a little more in the games.

>> No.3596916

>>3596845
The Lost Land is a great concept because it functions as the universe's dumping ground, allowing justification for literally anything to exist there. It's also cool how the inhabitants ended up there since random portals just spawn and suck up whatever is near by and bam, into the Lost Land you go.

Another reason why I hate Turok 2008 so much, as it retconed the Lost Land into a generic jungle planet that just happens to have dinosaurs on it.

Exactly. There you go. Serious Sam was a hold backwards and fire simulator largely. For all it's graphical majesty it was mostly kind of crappy. Metroid Prime was junk and the puzzle solving was basically non existent scan everything waste your time and the exploration was more take your time getting everywhere because the movement was so slow.
There's a bunch of mediocre FPS games you can try from 1998+

Let's see now, NOLF/2, Sin, Gunman Chronicles, Shogo, Quake 2, Blood 2, JK2, Wheel of Time, AvP, Star Trek games, Deus Ex, Bond FPS games, Red Faction, RtCW, Halo, etc...
The list of mediocre FPS that offers not very good gameplay combined with not actual puzzles is pretty much nonstop at that point.

Yeah, maybe if you're playing on the n64 and the framerate saves your ass.

That won't happen on the PC port though, you can have 200 health but the laser robots will tear you a new one in half a second, down your pants in 1 second and drill your ass with a dragon died in 1.5 seconds.
