Not sure how this game holds up against other SMUPS but it was pretty damn popular in my social circle and everyone had freeware / pirated copies.

It's fairly simplistic as far as these games go, but I liked the music and that you could combine your own choice of weapons, and the progress of getting money to pay for em.

Triplane Turmoil is also a really great game, old DOS abandonware.

It's not really a conventional shmup, but it's awesome. Has free scrolling with pitch/speed controls instead of fixed scroll up/down/left/right, mission is to destroy the enemy base. I guess it's sort of like Defender in a way.

Let me think. There's 6a 6b 6c and 6d.
6a and 6b are kind of the same.
6a is the default path while 6b is intentional, 6b is harder.

6c and 6d are kind of the same. However 6d is harder by virtue of what you have to get there alone.

To get to any of these stages you must:
1) Score high enough on 4 of 5 stages to borderup
2) Play the majority of your time in the border of the stage you want to go to; 6b- green 6c- yellow 6d- red

Oh to more accurately answer your question. That's as long as it gets. The joy is getting good enough to 1cc it, and then getting fucked up in remix mode.

Cool, I was hoping it was a bonus / something you had to do to get the true ending. It'd probably shatter my will to keep playing if level 5 turned out to only be the halfway point or something.

I don't know if my vmu shit the bed or if the game changes after the first time you get to that point, but I played it yesterday for the first time after beating level 5 and all of my high scores had reset. I also lost all the lives of my first continue at level 4 and got a game over instead of a continue. No idea why that happened, I should have earned at least 2 or 3 continues in that amount of play time on one continue.

A lot of retro shmups are pretty fast paced. That said, I might recommend the Ray series (Rayforce, Raystorm, Raycrisis). They don't skimp on the bullet density late game but are pretty chill otherwise. Among the three, though, Rayforce is final destination-tier in terms of difficulty. Have fun staying alive in that one without things getting hectic.

Dodonpachi might also be more your speed, the game throws bullet curtains at you at a respectable pace.

RefleX is not /vr/, but its original incarnation, Reflection, is. Give Reflection a try sometime, it's only three stages long.

What consoles do you own?
If you own a Super Nintendo that can play Super Famicom carts, then you should get Parodius Da!. The other ports are fine too, but Da! probably has the least amount of slowdowns. If you own a Saturn that is able to play import games, then you could collect the rest of the Parodius series on there. They are basically arcade-perfect.

Shmups aren't usually my cup of tea so I can't really compare it to many others, but I definitely found it a really hard game and part of why I like it so much.

It's designed quite well so no one weapon is good all the way through. Sometimes you want the shots that home, other times you want the wide ones or even the powerful vulcans you get by shooting your bit at empty space a few times.

So you have to know what you're going to want for the next section so you can start looking for the right enemies to power up. That's pretty key, don't switch weapons unless you know there will be enough of one kind to level it up. Getting stuck with a weak weapon is doom in that game.
