Just picked up an N64, Banjo & DK64. The games are in the mail, anything I should know going into them? Haven't played either but played the hell out of Conker's BFD years ago.

Haha I did, a friend is sending me both along with the Expansion Pak. I've heard mixed things about using the Pak with other games - does it help anything? It's just extra RAM, right?

Just keep the expansion pak in your 64 at all times

I got Banjo as well in the mail OP but with Tooie instead.

I never played Tooie, but I did play DK64 as a kid. Looking back I don't really think it was as good as I remember it. Just to be safe, play Banjo first.

Tooie's still good, but noticeably less so and B-K. It relies too much on backtracking.

Thanks for the responses. I've been told similar things so I went with the first instead of Tooie, and DK64 was a bucket list game so I figured I should at least give it a real attempt. I've tried emulating both with mixed results which is why I finally picked up the hardware. I grabbed Jet Force Gemini with the system but I've been struggling with the controls.

space station silicon valley has some issues with the expansion pak.

Ah, ok. I'm looking to pick that up at some point, it looked very interesting and I'd love to go through DMA's games. Body Harvest looks cool as well, I've heard that it doesn't hold up too well but the concept is intriguing.

just keep your original pak thing around if you have, because issues exist there's no reason to toss it

Body Harvest has a great story and good gameplay. Worlds have that kinda desolate vibe you only really get on the n64. Having said that, it can suffer from slowdown and it's pretty unforgiving in terms of difficulty.

Banjo Kazooie is probably my favorite N64 platformer and I think it still holds up nicely. I've loaned it to friends who never played it and they loved it too.

DK64 is also a great game. The most common complaint has to do with backtracking and collecting. I personally think that "flaw" has more to do with how our expectations and choices have changed over the years.

As a kid back then, any additional content was welcome, even if it seems "redundant" or whatever. Most kids had a just handful of games that were played over and over, or they just messed around in a game's world after beating it. Nowadays with cheaper games and emulation, we might have literally hundreds of games on our backlog waiting to be played and anything remotely repetitive is seen as an annoyance.

Sorry, I'll step down from my soapbox. I just feel like DK64 needs a defener sometimes.

DK64 is pure garbage.

Awesome, I'm very excited to crack into both of them and I'm honestly fine with backtracking, I had assumed both games would have a lot of it from what I remember anecdotally as a kid, but I was way into the Dreamcast at the time and moved from there to the Gamecube. I had always wished there was something similar to a Rare platformer on DC but aside from Sonic Adventure (which is... a stretch) nothing seemed close.

works fine with mine.

I've put more hours into Super Mario 64 doing this than I have actually completing objectives. The freedom of movement in that game is absolutely ridiculous, and you can get real fuckin creative with it if you want.

There is no game since SM64 that has achieved this quite as well, in my opinion.

I looked this up then, apparently there are multiple revisions of SSSV and certain ones work fine while others can have freezing or other issues.

That's kinda what drew me to the Rare platformers, I had tried SM64 a few times when it came out on Virtual Console and had a hard time with it. It sounds like I need to try playing around with an actual copy and just experiment a little.

>> No.3595540

>>3595375
virtual console's n64 emulator has absolutely raped the stick mapping and added a huge deadzone, so you don't get fine control. get a raphnet adapter if you don't have any good n64 sticks.

I no longer have that Wii or the VC stuff on it so it's no worries, that explains my control troubles though. I used that "classic controller" or whatever it was called. The N64 controller is taking some getting used to but I grabbed a third party one along with the used one and the stick feels nice and tight, didn't expect much from a Cirka but it's impressed me thus far. Have you used the raphnet GC to N64 adapter? Would that be worth using for something like Jet Force?

I have. It's better than any 3rd party n64 controller with the exception of the Hori Mini Pad.

I'm really glad to hear that, I seriously considered a $70 used Hori but that price fucking hurts.
