Breath of Fire IV had a pretty nice visual style, don't you think?

>> No.3581641

I understand not having different sprites for every weapon, but they could at least implement different animations for each one.
And different half-dragon forms, that was a must. What happened? Did they run out of time?

Aside from maybe PoPoLoCrois I think it's the best looking RPG on the system period. But it wins out for not being a boring piece of shit.

It's a pretty typical JRPG. You're a young boy on a journey to save your mother from the underworld or something like that.

It's absolutely gorgeous graphically and I used to pour over ads and articles about it in Newtype dreaming we'd get it some day. Then it was finally ported to PSP and translated like 10 years later so I got it. But it's really a kid's game and as charming as the world was, it was super boring and I only got mid way through before dropping it.

I saw it once at a game store years back. I thought it looked interesting so I asked one of the employees about the game. He said that it's gay and I accepted his judgement.

I wish this game wasn't jam packed with stupid gimmicks and forced mini games - and a camera that's always set in an isometric angle. Come on, Capcom, Game Arts got that part down back in /97.

I sure as fuck hope you're not referring to Grandia.

I am. That game was way easier to navigate around. You had a handy compass to tell you the rough direction of the exit, a bunch of bird's eye view points in large rooms, and other stuff like that.

>> No.3581931

>>3581925
It looks like dogshit compared to BoFIV though. I do get what you're saying, but the tight isometric veiw is what allowed Capcom to make it look as impressive as it does.

Grandia holds the spot as being one of the most disappointing RPGs I ever played though, so I have a special hate boner for it.

>Grandia

I still haven't gotten around to playing it, apart from first city. I can agree the graphics are quite unpolished, but it still feels like such a nice game. My sister liked it and I have about the same taste in games as her so I'll have to keep it in my list of games to play when I get time.

>> No.3582218

>>3582208
Individual tastes may vary. I really like exploring in RPGs and Grandia was supposedly a game all about the joy of exploring ancient ruins and the like. Also the Lunar games had been my favorite RPGs of the 16 bit era, so my hopes were high.

But the exploring is where it really fell apart for me, every dungeon was both short and super linear. Any branch from the main path was tiny so you never really feel like you're exploring. Also they were mostly really boring design wise as well, until you get to the last couple in the whole game. Then on top of that the characters were all either bland or outright annoying and in game voices were awful.

It does have kind of a neat battle system which is sort of a take on ATB, but in my opinion it wasn't nearly enough to outweigh the bad stuff.

Also it should be noted though, by the time I played it I was starting to get burned out on the RPG genre as a whole so I was getting a lot more picky with them. I know there are people who like the game.

>> No.3582236

Are yous talking about Grandia in general or just the first game? Because I thought the second game was a lot more engrossing than the first game, while the first one was some kind of half assed and childish; it could have worked out better if they at least mixed in some coming of age themes since the main characters are basically kids going on a journey... but no, nothing that happens in that game develops naturally.

>> No.3582257

>>3582236
I'm the one hating on it, and just the first game. The second one looked neat, but I wasn't playing really any RPGs at that point and then never got around to trying it.

I fine with the childish aspect of the game, I just thought it was overall badly made.

>> No.3582267

>>3582218

I'm not that fond of exploring in games with random battles (which this is, right?) so that wouldn't be a problem for me. The dungeons in Suikoden imo were annoying because they had too many pointless side paths.

>should I go there and risk more battles or just ignore it?

Constantly.

Exploring dungeons are perfect in action RPGs. I don't have a problem with exploration in general, like walking the world map and finding hidden areas, but inside dungeon levels I just want fun battles and interesting enemies on a single path if it's a random battle system.

>> No.3582287

>>3582267
Yeah they're random battles. It sounds like the game may be up your alley. There was a lot that I didn't like about Suikoden, but I did kind of like the dungeons.

I'd suggest getting an iso if you can and give it a try. If you like battles, the system is the best part of it. I don't remember it perfectly, but it's like active time except hitting enemies can mess with their timing and vice versa. It also split XP gain for levels and weapon experience to be a bit SaGa-ish where you level up various weapons or spells through repeated use and they get more powerful, but you have to pick and choose a bit what to focus on.

I played IV with my gf a couple of months ago. It's the only BoF I played. Boring as fuck for the most part, I guess I didn't connect with any of the cast, so I didn't care much for them. Music is also pretty bland, can't remember any tune from memory apart from the usual fight tune and the like (wich are also meh at most). It's a gorgeous game, can't deny that, the work they did with the sprites is amazing: animation, pallette, etc. It holds much better than say FFVII with its ugly cardboard anime people, still I'd play FF over this any day, and I only got to finish VII for the first time like maybe 2 years ago, so nostalgia googles don't apply.

The music is great, the fuck are you on about? It might not be super upbeat RPG music, which is also good for some people who want something different, but it has tons of memorable and well composed tunes that fit right into the game's scenario and atmosphere, it's a fucking masterpiece.
