I've only played HTC2 and Unloved so far.

HTC2 was pretty shit. You feel unsettled at first, but then you gradually begin to realize nothing worthwhile is happening. Then again, I'm not afraid of clowns.

Unloved was awesome. The map design was interesting, the music was kickass, and all the while you felt like any second you were going to get a chainsaw shoved up your ass.

In my opinion, Samsara and Brutal Doom seem to be at the complete opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to Doom modding.

You have Samsara, which plays very well and has a very clear goal in mind--and it also looks like shit. The games have not aged well, their effects are bland at best, and while it's clear Terminus is talented at art because of the multitude of sprite edits and new graphics, he doesn't get to do much. Samsara plays well, looks like hell. It doesn't have any major up-front bang, and in singleplayer it actually gets kind of boring, but in multiplayer heellll yes.

Brutal Doom is so over-the-top and crazy, it relies more on spectacle and in-your-face brutality and fancy wheels. It's got all sorts of extra shit, like Fatalities and pretty effects, and etc, and in the end it's really just window dressing. Many can critique it about being schizophrenic, since Mark doesn't really seem to have an objective beyond "MORE BRUTAL", and frequently redacts what changes he's made in the next update.
But GOD DAMN, it looks and plays pretty as shit. It's pretty much made for singleplayer orgasms, long sprees of HOLY SHIT DID I JUST DO THAT, but once you involve other people...eehhh...

I have only recently actually sat down and decided to play through Final Doom proper. I had only ever really played through Doom and Doom II countless times over the years. As well as some other random wads people have made.

Holy shit why did I never try these before, they're so gloriously hard and you keep coming back for more. Its difficulty is paced well and I have yet to blame poor map design for any of my deaths, which is something a lot of other wads have problems with. There are none of those, "come on, how is anyone supposed to do this," moments for me, at least not yet.

Eversince I was a youngin' I've never found any shotgun in any game to be as satisfying as the SSG in Doom II.

For me the reload animation is just captured so damn well, only a handful of frames and the sounds are perfectly timed and accentuate it so well even though the SFX is so simple. Doomguy slaps both shells in at once and brings the weapon back up fully ready to deal out what is honestly an insane amount of damage.

For that little moment of vulnerability having such a long reload after each shot you are rewarded when you unleash a field of pure death and pain, up close and personal. Shooting that thing down a hallway and listening to zombies and imps moan in pain and fall to the ground at your feet in little more than one key press.

The levels aren't just cool, they are just hard enough to be fun, I always take a mauling, but yet I manage to survive most of the times, though with slim margins.

They'd put you in an enclosed space with an Arch-Vile, and you'd be all "Oh fuck one of those scary ass motherfuckers, how will I do this?", but yet I always manage.

I mean, I can handle a Vile, but they scare the shit out of me.

I think Arch-Viles were some of my first "Oh shit," enemies in a FPS game, even though Doom sadly was not my first shooter. You see one of those fuckers and you instantly change all your priorities, a lot of games have had enemies like that, but never to the effect the Vile has had on me.

To be honest the reason I keep coming back to Doom is each of the monsters you face never cease to be interesting to face. Each needing a little bit of a different approach.

I think the beauty really is in the simplicity of it all. Modern shooters with all their fancy "A.I" will never be more interesting than a wave of Doom monsters to me.

It's large. It's very large, easily one of the biggest maps available to ZDoom Wars. It's full of long tunnels, long walkways, long drops, etc.
The Cyberrunner traverses it like nothing, taking a trek across the entire map in a mere minute.
I cannot emphasize enough, this is a LARGE MAP.

Lookin good. I would say you should carry your upward momentum better off ramps so you have a bit of hang time. That way ramps can be used to cross gaps and such. And drifting should be more exaggerated. That tight corner looked kinda weak.

Study the details of real weapons, just doodle and doodle until you get something that looks good, then you do that one over and over again until it looks even better.

Experiment, a lot. Take bits and bobs from various weapons and stick them on each other, to see if you can work out something interesting. Does it look like a good base for a weapon or is it just a scope on the Shadow-Warrior Uzi (for whatever reason that would make sense)? If it's the former, work around with it, toy with the idea, try making a brand new weapon based on that thing.

how do you guys prefer to play? i've played enough marathon for a lifetime, having grown up a mac gamer, but i've only started to delve into doom recently, with gzdoom. my retro side really wants me to play with the extended keyboard controls like i would any other 2.5D thing, but i have gzdoom set up right now to play like quake 3, basically, wasd controls, crouch and jump included, playing in 1280x800 with no texture filtering or anything. it still feels weird.

Sculptris is for straight sculpting. The models you make with it more or less aren't animate-able because they're stupid dense, and for something to be rigable (making the skeleton to make it move) you need something called edgeflow (loops of edges where the mesh deforms) to make it worth doing.

You COULD take the details of a sculptris file and bake them onto the texture of a retopologized mesh. Retopologizing is taking the dense mesh and drawing a new, less dense, rigable mesh overtop of it. Baking is transfering the details onto that meshes texture (instead of using polygons)...

To make running frames without all of this I would model the thing in T or A pose (look it up) and then move it into running pose 1, and save it as another file. Go back to A pose file, pose it in running pose 2, save it. And once you have all the of poses you want render it out in the 8 different directions doom monsters can look in.

This is going to be really hard to do if it's you're first time, and I recommend starting with something easier, like a cacodemon-like monster that doesn't have running poses and just has 1 attack animation. You could even have it explode to avoid needing a death animation. That would be a good warm up. A good warm up before that would be to just dick around with the program before trying to make anything and getting frustrated.

OpenGL, freelook, a red dot as crosshair (so it's like I've got a lasersight or red-dot/aimpoint), no auto-aim (I never liked auto-aim anyway, in any game), jump and crouch to dodge enemy fire and attacks (it's like the regular Doom dodging dance, except with an added axis), but not to break sequence (unless it's a map I really hate, like E4M2). Usually, I have always_run off, it feels better to slowly move through the level (and Doomguy is a fast fucker to begin with), but I'll haul ass when needed.

I frequently play with .wads that do all kinds of crazy shit (though not Brutal Doom, it's novelty wanes fast), that said, I do enjoy the occasional old-school, even on average ports (PS3), or utterly butchered ports (GBA).

My preferred difficulty setting is Ultra-Violence.

you need to find the easter egg on the lava part, you need atleast 2 people for it. after that a beachball spawns on the beach you get it and it triggers harmony.

if the "players are dwindling down" message already appeared if you get the ball the map becomes metal styled with lava as water instead.

If Kart codeguy is still around I have a suggestion

I'm the one who's been harping on road rash melee this whole time and I was thinking: a lot of people raised a valid point that it would create a lot of complexity for: mappers, the engine, and controls re: the players themselves. Not to mention it would require spriteguy to create left and right attacking animations for characters (can't mirror them. See: Cyberdemon).

But then, the ramming physics demonstration got me thinking. Perhaps side attacking can be accomplished simply by side-ramming, and "melee" powerups can have a half-side-to-front AE cone, where the character just does his generic "using an item" animation and then an effect, like a chainsaw circling around the sides and in front of the character, happens. It would add much needed ease-of-use to the idea, from all angles: implementation to player use.

What do you guys think?
